but i just can't. It's going to be SO TWEE it might make me a bit sick, plus all the PEOPLE who will be there :((((
Waiting in anticipation for the other weekend to be announced, and i'm kind of pleased i won't have the choice between the two for once!
and Godspeed You! Black Emperor played ...
but they're no fun. Can you imagine B&S picking...i dunno, Fucked Up or like, Negative Approach? Because those are two of the best ATP experiences i've had and as much as i LOVE* standing around listening to post rock bands stand around playing their instruments and gurning i don't think that really makes it much more appealing (Slint are one of my favourite bands but their ATP set was so dull)
and they are not particularly twee.
And the Flaming Lips would probably be completely awesome, i'm just sayin' with B&S curating theres more than likely going to be a high percentage of scottish twee indie bands playing, most of which make me want to burst my own ear drums.
are VERY twee
based around thudding dynamics, simple, almost childlike tunes, and sensitively plucked guitar-lines, attempts to elicit similar cutesy and/or damaged emotional reactions to B&S imo
it's music without great sophistication, but with enormous heart. the sophistication it does have is engineered to provide enough intellectual fodder for us to ruminate upon our own emotional reaction. it subverts expectations only in isolated moments, that in retrospect seem obvious. protest songs about the agony of life. melanchole for young people to wallow in. when done well, pretty glorious, when done badly, cloying.
this is very general and all of these bands deviate from it at points but I seriously think a lot of instrumental music is deeply twee. although God Is An Astronaut are twee-er than Mogwai, GYBE and Eluvium combined XD
really don't work on the DiS format
except this one
its impossible to pin down twee but id say the litmus test would be if you can play a song to a toddler and it makes the happy it is probably twee, if you play a toddler some godspeed they would probably cry, not twee. im not a b and s fan but they picked a good line up last time and think atp could benefit from so twee after all the noise
the finding of precious and simple, essentially sentimental, beauty within a harsh and frequently oppressive world. it's a music of destitution and survival. it's a reaction against misery but an acknowledgement of it. IMO.
mogwai and gybe fit nicely into this sphere, although mogwai are possibly a bit too public-school to be truly twee by the definition above. their music's certainly all about the beauty-in-brutality, and it's not subtle about it either.
wouldn't describe mogwai as 'twee' to a newcomer, but there's an element to their music i'd describe as emotional sentimentalism.
Because it's so fucking wrong
but more than a little twee.
but it is also an aesthetic which godspeed mogwai etc just do not fit into
Can't remember the exact quote but it was something about how it was a negative term for affected naive/sinscerity, whereas if something with similar sentiments is accepted dirrectly then it isn't twee. I think these bands aren't putting forward affected emotion in their music
well i've never even considered that Mogwai & co might be twee. When you explain it that way it kind of makes sense in a theoretical sense but in reality? In no way would i describe them to somebody who didn't know what they sounded like as 'twee'. My definitions may be fucked up though, who knows.
it would make sense in a bringing the first 2 currators back for the 10th year kinda way and they were conspicuously absent from both of last decembers when they would have fit on either
i don't like belle and sebastian.
for a while now, exciting
Supersonic and Colour Out of Space it is.
as bands rarely ever pick the kind of people I'd expect them to anyhow. Well, except Slint...
like I was sure mbv would have picked patti smith last year but that didn't happen.
Divine Comedy, Mercury Rev and Flmaing Lips come back.
And this ATP is happenign around the wedddign present bizaroo tour...
sorry, i mean WHERE IS TEH NOISE HOOPY?!!
could be This Life + 10
This might be the ATP where people put off by how scenester the festival is viewed as might have some interest in going.
My experience over the dozen ATPs I've been to is as such: there's a core group, maybe 50% of the crowd, who go because it's ATP (whatever their reasons are - I go to them all because its a great weekend of music and partying), and then there's the 50% who go because of the curator/lineup vibe. Dreadlocked grebos at Portishead. Tattooed metallers at Patton/Melvins. Beardy guys at Explosions. Relatively-normal looking people in their 30s at Breeders.
Anyone who views it as a "scenster" festival is doing themselves a massive disfavour, and probably only has that view because it features that they've not heard or heard of.
After years of trying to get them to go, they went and didn't invite me! Twats. Mind you I had fallen out with them slightly at that time, so it's my own fault really..Would like to go to the Belle and Sebastien one, would be good fun!
The Breeders was full of late-thirtysomething lesbians.
got a ticket on the belle and sebastian presale. My trust in ATP and Belle and Sebastian better not be misplaced...
my early-forties manager & her husband went to the portishead one (thank god i didn't bump into her), and my tattooed long-hair head-banging metaller friend went to the patton/melvins one.
yay for generalisation!
I was too young to go to Bowlie, so I'm really looking forward to this. Really hope Edwyn Collins plays!
is the best anagram I can make from Belle And Sebastian.
Anyone got a better one?
is the best one I've come up with so far, really annoying that there's an extra 'e' instead of an 'a'.
but i'm confident they'll pick a great line-up.
I imagine it'll be as great as ATP ever is. You never know, maybe B&S will request Aphex and Autechre.
though they are taking the year off, it's at the end of 2010 and they are playing a summer festival in Japan, and they haven't done atp for a while.
I'm going and my girlfriend is mega excited and it'll be her first one. AS a curator they are quite a different prospect than the recent ones but they should pick enough great fun stuff as they do have more of a sense of humour in their music than Pavement, Breeders, MBV etc...
Arab Strap reunion please.
when one will do
a: Without B&S there would be no ATP
b: I love B&S
c: It will piss off all the beard strokers and the 'LET'S RIP OFF OUR SHIRTS DOWN THE FRONT AT LIGHTNING BOLT' massive.
Most of them are probably indistinguishable from the stereotypical B&S fan. Skinny little indie kids who would be scared of a nu-metal circlepit. If LB sold girls' jeans, they'd make a fortune.
but I'm waiting for the other weekend to be announced...if I go to one at all I'll probably be going with my boyfriend and we need one we'll both enjoy. However if the other weekend isn't as good as this and all the 2 berth chalets for this have sold out by then I'll be very very upset :( OH THE RISK
because I REALLY want to go to this, but have no idea how I'm meant to do it without three other people to share a chalet with.
looking for extras to bulk up a chalet
as long as you don't mind sharing with internetters that is!
as long as they have reasonable standards of personal hygiene!
So yeah, if anyone needs an extra person for a chalet, i'm really nice and polite and won't ruin anyones fun....
And I mean A M A Z I N G
here are all the bands who played last time...
The lineup included:

Dean and sean, damon and naomi, dean and britta were they trying to rival each other
i miss sodastream, the delgados and sleater-kinney so.
it will be brilliant with even more bands.
I just hope I find some people to go with, I'll be fucking distraught if I'm stuck at home come December 10th.
play all three nights or just one, or does it vary with each ATP?
play with the Vaselines last year? That might make them a fairly likely shout.
is the general sale on yet? though a few more bands were going to be announced when it was?
BELLE & SEBASTIAN
THOSE DANCING DAYS
still yet to see those dancing days.
this really is more of a summer line-up though. not sure i want to brave MBV like weather for it.
and the £20 and £10 discount tickets are on sale, and the deposit scheme is open.
some £10 off 2 berths still available
Tickets were not on sale until after 9:10am. I delayed setting off for work to try to get a twin berth. Now I am on the bus heading in late and no tickets yet. Boo.
have the early bird discount sold out on 4 berth self catering? when i check out the total is £735.00 (including booking fee of £35.00 per ticket, is that right? thank you!
go back up, its £620
was a bit too eager! thanks
makes me really happy, time to start hassling friends to go to this
I really wish ATP had a "share with strangers" ticket option.
the ultimate internet losers all together!
