Ben Frost + Teeth Of The Sea + Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides - the Luminaire, 30th May
Hello, but more information on this one now. I'm really excited about this one.
Ben Frost - vast, weighty compositions give way to tense minimalism on Frost's recent album By The Throat. One of Wire's top ten albums of 2009.
"A feeling of proximity to overwhelming scale and power... something defiantly new and distinctly dramatic"- Wire
"These vivid instrumentals, which seem menacing at first, also feel somehow triumphant when heard again: 8.4"- Pitchfork
"Its a hollow, unforgiving, brutal yet utterly beautiful record full of deep intricacies that wont let you go. 'BY THE THROAT' indeed."
-NME
"As solid and physically assaultive an experience as the title ...BY THE THROAT reaches right out and punches you out of your skin."
-BBC

Teeth of the Sea - dark psychedelia, takes you from a Morricone western, to an Acid Mother's wig out.

Part Wild Horses Mane on Both Sides - flute and drums duo sometimes roar, otherwise hypnotically tribal.

As recommended by TimeOut:
http://www.timeout.com/london/music/event/188300/ben-frost-teeth-of-the-sea-part-wild-horses-manes-on-both-sides
is the overground going to be working by then markee?
still extremely excited for this.
The line from Stratford to Gospel Oak won't be no.
There are rail replacement buses though. The rest of the Overground network, including the stretch on which Brondesbury falls and the new bit between Dalston Junction and West Croydon will be working though.
YES
I'm definitely going to be able to go to this.
GET IN
This might be the final bump.
Sunday night, folks!
Anyone word on stage times yet marckee?
doors are at half 7.30
so Mark said Part Wild Horses would probably be on at 8pm. He's just getting proper confirmation and I'll let you know when I hear more.
are there still tickets on the door and
what time is ben frost on?
I rather enjoyed this
Ears still hurt though - the first couple of minutes were brutal on them. Really enjoyed the support (esp the 2nd Neu!-like band)
Also talky talky people go away
You know you're talking too loud when I can still hear you over Ben Frost
This was extraordinary - great set by Mr Frost
Never really been that sold on the album but the set was incredible. Really great - I had that lovely spot in the Luminaire in the space to the left of the stage and got a great view of the main man, sans shoes, doing his all with guitar and shit. Loved those massive bass tones he was throwing around. Stayed too long (knew I was staying too long) and missed my last train home. Its just taken me two hours to get back and I'm still on a high! Seeing what I'd missed on the album now!
Well that was fucking AWESOME
Yeah, Ben Frost killed it, and I enjoyed the supports as well (perhaps Part Horses Mane slightly more). Frost's set was unbelievable, ear-bleedingly loud, far more minimalist than a lot of the By The Throat material due to lack of extra players, and 'Killshot' was gorgeous. It's strange how he manages to make music that's both utterly terrifying and really beautiful at once.
hi. did anyone else see the monitor on fire?
oh well.
Nope. Really?
I just assumed the burning smell was my ears
yes! we were right in front of it.
all just got a little bit too much for the little mointor. i don't know how people at the front without earplugs were able to listen to him, it was unbelievebaley crushingly loud. and awesome. Completely missed Part Horses as the Rail replacement buses took ages and afraid i really didn't like the second support.
I forgot my earplugs (what a bad gig to do that at...)
So I stuffed a load of tissue in my ears. Hardly ideal but there was one point where I genuinely thought someone without protection might just lose their hearing.
Really heavy on Theory Of Machines stuff, which was unexpected but not unwelcome - 'Theory of Machines' itself was lovely, and the wolves/tape player thing at the end was amazing. Wish it could have gone on for longer...
haha, oh dear, yes worst possible gig to forget them
down at the front someone put a pint on top of the stage speakers and it just buzzed off to side of the stage.
I hadn't actually heard Theory of Machines but I thought it was a great set, monolithic even, possibly more beat-y than i would have expected after listening to By The Throat, and I was hoping they had the new vinyl at the merch but instead I got the Theory of Machines cd, so i shall listen today.

Haha
:D
teeth of the sea
were rubbish.
the 1st support act were way better
From The Luminaire mailout ...
One of the hazards of running a venue is that we are often at the
mercy of those who care less about our venue and our customers than we do, leading to stage monitors blowing up, caused by artists who are so wrapped up in what they are doing they pay no mind to the effect they are having on others. If we were slightly less polite we would just come out and name the artist in question, but it would not serve any purpose, so we will not.
so, what, are the luminaire having a dig at ben frost?
its kind of an oddly worded piece. surely he was just playing his music and the mointor, which was added to another one on his left that seemed to not be working, just couldn't take his music. i don't understand.
They don't seem shy of having a whinge
They've done it a few times in the mailout. They make it out like a pre-determined act of terrorism against a music venue. Surely this stuff happens from time to time.
It's a little complicated,
but as I understand it (I'm no expert and I'm not totally aware of what went on) the monitor that blew was the one that was swapped in for a faulty one by the venue's sound guy at the start. It was smaller than the one used in the sound check and the levels weren't adjusted to suit. Some may say that it was the fault of the venue's sound guy, some may say that it was the fault of the artist's sound guy, and some may say that it was the fault of the artist for wanting to play so loud that it became an issue. Either way, it went.
What isn't in doubt is that Ben, and us, offered to pay for its repair/replacement immediately after the show. Whatever happened, I thought that we left the venue on good terms and that they'd get back to us to confirm the costs involved (the venue's sound guy estimated it to be in the region of £100 as it was only a specific part of the monitor, not the whole thing, that needed replacing).
I'm not going to comment on the content, tone or appropriateness of the mailout, but I would like to say that the Luminiare is head and shoulders above just about every other venue in London. The whole set up and their care and attention is something that we've never had cause to complain about.
That email comment is badly misjudged
Firstly the entire tone is petty and immature. Secondly it's surely the venue's responsibility to look after facilities and set any boundaries about use of the venue (it's not like there was wilful damage, e.g. singer chucking microphone at wall or something, it was just the use of the equipment in the manner intended). Thirdly, you offered to pay for any repair required. Promoter and Ben Frost both owed an apology there, frankly.
Shame as you say, given that the Luminaire is otherwise a fine venue.
wish I was there
I like what I've heard of the Singing Knives bands and really want to see Ben Frost on his own, his stuff mixed in with the other artists on the Whale Watching tour didn't really work for me, great though that show was.
Anyway here's a review. http://mapsadaisical.wordpress.com/2010/05/31/ben-frost-teeth-of-the-sea-and-part-wild-horses-mane-on-both-sides-at-the-luminaire-300510/
Yeah, it was interesting to see it being performed on its own
Very different to the Whale Watching tour, fantastic though that was.
Another review: http://middleboop.blogspot.com/2010/05/ben-frost-teeth-of-sea-part-wild-horses.html
Is mapsadaisical a DiSer?
don't think so.
a twitterer i think but not on dis. might be wrong of course.
i was
at the gig on sunday and both myself and my boyfriend left appalled by the venue.
the guy taking the booking info on the ticket desk was being quite stroppy with people and the signage throughout the venue was all very rude and cold.
i agree with people not talking throughout gigs but their signage and constant ssshing was really contradicted by a lot of their staff and was being arsey for being arseys sake.
i think their mailout message confirms what we were thinking on friday as we made our way home, nice venue, shame about the people running it.
you're upset about the signage?!
luminaire is a fantastic venue. there seems to have been a misunderstanding between the venue and promoter but it happens. i didnt think the original email seemed that strongly worded anyway.
Reply
The content, tone and appropriateness of the mailout was a mistake, poorly judged and although we like a whinge (as well as enjoying getting excited about things that excite us, as most people), we should not have whinged in public and in fact should not have made any mention of the gig at all. It was stupid, and we apologise. We've spoken to the promoter today and there is no issue on either side.
WhiteLightWhiteCity: since you don't know the specific circumstances, you're not going to be able to accurately judge the pettiness or otherwise of the tone, but for more on how we feel about the tone, see above. Some don't like the tone of our newsletter, some do. It's meant to be informal and conversational and sometimes comes across as sarcastic, which is because we are (or I am). The only way we're not going to annoy someone is by just listing the gigs, but we think it's boring, and the feedback we get is that the majority of those who read the newsletter would think so to. It's our job to responsibly look after facilities, yep, though setting boundaries isn't 100% foolproof. What happened was more complicated than anyone on here has stated.
pleatedskirt: the guy at box office. We wholeheartedly agree. It was his first shift, and his last. The signage; some see it as rude and cold. It is not intended to be either, but we feel very strongly about the sentiment. We are never arsey for arsey's sake. If you want to mention a specific member of staff, email andy@theluminaire.co.uk, or for anything else for that matter.
Cheers,
Andy
</thread>
well, people can still post if they fancy telling everyone how awesome this was...
yep
sorry, meant </arguement>.
im sure it was fantastic. frost was superb at primavera
yeah his primavera set...
was awesome...probably my pick of the weekend. i wish i coulda summoned the energy to make the sunday showing too.
The words were petty regardless of the circumstances
That faux moral superiority of 'Some people's behaviour isn't up to scratch, but I'm too big to name them' schtick while anyone can tell who you're referring to is weak. It's not about being more 'interesting' to read, it's about implying that Ben Frost / Be Prepared have conducted themselves selfishly and irresponsibly when that doesn't seem to be the case (naturally I've assummed Marckee's account is broadly accurate). To your credit you've acknowledged that the message was a mistake. Keep up the good work of presenting gigs and not chatfests-over-music like a lot of other places.
I did say that I wasn't 100% sure of what happened.
I've sent a message to Andy thanking him for his post - there are very few venues that would have taken the time to respond to these threads/individual posts in such a measured way.
We're over it. Please don't drag this out.
apparently ben frost didnt play his nottm gig
and volcanic ash was given as a reason...
I heard that too,
which is a bit odd as he caught the train up there from London. I dunno.
Brighton gig tonight was a bit of a farce
Seems that the Freebutt sound system can't cope with the power of his music. Two songs cut out halfway through, after that he didn't have the heart to carry on. Or, to use his words, "it's like when your mum walks in on you masturbating - there's just no way back".
Did he have sound issues at Primavera?
he cut out a couple of times if I remember
seemed a bit pissed, but just carried on regardless
Well
I for one can't wait to hear what this sounds like in a church this evening, I hope I'll make it in time...
oh balls didn't know he was doing a gig in manc
there goes my scheming for a show next year. have fun dude, he was absolutely intense on sunday.
