Reading there is 150+ releases - I fancy listening to him.. which record is an accessable starting point?
If you fancy spending some money get the Merzbox
He did this album called 1930 released on Tzadik which I think is really good. There's also Kikuri a collaboration between Merzbow and Haino Keiji which is truly an amazing listen. But I haven't listened to all of Merzbow's releases and actually don't really think there's a particular starting point, just take the dive
Might try out some other stuff first.. :-)
there's nothing particularly accessible to Merzbow's music. I would have said 1930 is a good starting point as it's one of my favourites too. His earlier analogue work is worth a listen (Venereology, Music for Bondage Performance) as is his digital stuff like Camouflage, Tamago, Scene, Merzbird, Bloody Sea etc. etc.
He did a nice collab with Boris called Sunbaked Snowcave and also a really good one with Sonic Youth and Mats Gustaffson where he's not in it for the first fifteen twenty minutes or so then he subtley drifts in.
There's loads of it out there and I think it's best to just go for it and pick a couple and see how you like him.
Have you ever read this? http://thequietus.com/articles/00320-sonic-youth It's hilarious
And fairly accurate.
And The Devil Makes Three.
But I like Merzbird.
Merzbow & Genesis P.Orridge - 'A Perfect Pain' is also good.
Also Merzbannon is pretty good. Maybe because Merzbow and Racebannon seems like an odd combination.
I will try 1930, and then dive in from there! cheers
