you read it here first, shit right, hahahahha, will still sell out in 5 seconds, total waste of time festival, yawn...
Only went once in 2002, but there was such a variety of stuff on offer. There was never a moment the entire weekend when I thought "hmm, what'll I do now?"
They have such a massive array of tents which cater for loads of tastes and, whilst the bands who play them may not be wholly favourable to you, it's a bit of a sweeping generalisation to say the whole festival is a waste of time.
Personally I don't think Arcade Fire would work very well as a headliner, but there are many who'll enjoy it. Similarly, I can't stand G'n'R or Blink 182, but both of them will undoubtedly put on great shows for those who appreciate them. If you don't like those 3 acts, chances are there'll be a headliner somewhere else in the festival grounds, so you could always, y'know, not watch the main stage?
is that it's way, way oversold. they've increased the capacity by a huge amount without actually increasing the size of any of the tents.
i went in 2002. i distinctly remember wandering into the radio 1 stage mid-afternoon to catch Rival Schools about five minutes before they started and getting a spot on the barrier.
the last time i went for the weekend was 2007. dinosaur jr played a similar slot but i had to get there halfway through the previous band just to have a chance of getting into the tent, let alone a good spot. the previous band was the pigeon detectives.
I saw Dinosaur Jr at leeds 07 and the tent was half empty by the time they played.
Looking back it was a hell of a lineup that year actually, saw the likes of Arcade Fire, Battles, The Hold Steady, Devendra Banhart, Dino Jr, NiN, Brand New.. headliners kinda sucked though.
what a year!
the SP set at leeds got slated, the one at Reading was brilliant
In 2008 and 2009 the Radio 1 Tent was markedly bigger than previous years - in 2009 they even rotated round to ensure that it had enough space. They've also moved the FR stage behind the row of trees, which has helped with blocking out some of the main stage sound. It can still get very busy in the arena but it's not as bad as it had been previously.
As for Dinosaur Jr. you probably could have wandered in to the tent 5 mins before they were on and got a decent space. The large majority of the crowd for The Pigeon Detectives would have left once they finished - which has been the situation for pretty much every band I've seen at a festival, ever. Popular (mainstream) band = large crowd so means getting there early to get a decent spot.
when Be Your Own Pet played in 2008.
Same with Metric this year. Hideously empty.
for be your own pet. Such a shame how few people were there given it was like there 4th from last gig or something...
and I remember Dinosaur Jr being really surprisingly and almost embarrassingly empty, and Rival Schools being rammed.
GET THE FUCK IN.
You're just gay for liking Blink 182 and getting excited about doing headlining shows.
I wouldnt want you to know me if you like that shit.
I mean really, Dude Ranch, Enema Of The State, Take Off Your Pants And Jacket, AND The Mark, Tom, and Travis Show are all ACE. So shut the hell up, already. You can talk shit when you can make pop-punk like them.
are doing headline shows - but only in Scotland - Aug 16 Aberdeen AECC, Aug 17 Glasgow SECC
im in aberdeen, never heard that info?
It got noticeably more crowded over the years. 1999 was probably the last year that there was an acceptable level of people in onsite before it just got ridiculous.
Whilst the quality of the main stage line up/headliners undoubtedly dive-bombed over the years, there's still more than enough good stuff to keep you entertained. I've never understood why people worry about the main stage headliners anyway. In a decade of attendance I probably watched 8 or 9 complete main stage headline sets.
surely arcade fire would have been a more relevant headliner back then non?
had a great time anyway but im staying home for electric picnic this year
