Okay, I know I'm way out of time, but this album's quite good, huh?
Can not stand them.
seems like I'm on my own here. Oh well.
Velvet is a belting tune
Yeah I finally got round to buying it the other week, 5.99 from HMV - bargain! It's a quality debut album to be fair, I think the review of the album on here sums it up pretty well. The album title track is simply perfection... throw in Velvet and you're already onto a winner.
the rest of the album is a massive let down.
they were brilliant, the sound was fresh and massive and they seemed to have some really good tunes- but its sticking power was non-existant and the tunes really didn't have that "stay in your head and drive you mental" feeling. Except the chorus to DOMIN-OOO-OOO'S! which, after finding out what it was about, really turned me off the band. It just seems the type of thing lads would sing at 3am on a saturday, pissing in the town fountain...
So, next time, I will listen but cautiously...
I'm not even sure it's the best track on the album. 'At War With The Sun' and 'A Brief History Of Love' are the stand outs on what is a strong debut, if you ask me.
Gotta tell you, I wanted to hate these chaps, but the music won me over. I'd be lying to myself if I said it was anything less than good.
but what kind of a history of love would it be if it didn't deal with the phenomena of one-night stands, the predatory antics of "lads", etc.?
That's one thing that disappoints me about reviews of the album — how few people seem to have given any thought or attention to its status as (for want of a better word) a concept album.
its at the opposite end of the spectrum as being shallow, but sometimes people put seem to put too much thought into some things that you just look like a prick.
but, I've come to my conclusion that the album IS very shallow after giving it a fair old chance to prove otherwise, from that I couldn't help but apply that to the actual band and their concept. Maybe there is more to it than this but the music on offer did not give me sufficient enough reason to dig any deeper - they're not that good...!
And delete Dominoes. That song killed them.
...and I went in with very low expectations.
but the other half is terrible.
I'm well aware Dominos has become horrendously overplayed in public media, and I'm eternally grateful that I pretty much ceased listening to the radio the day John Peel died on that account.
But it's still one of the biggest sounding songs on the charts in years - for me, it's not even about the chorus, it's the NOISE middle 8 - nothing else on the airwaves is remotely like it.
There's some filler on the album, but when they hit, it's like treading on a land-mine. I expect big things from their next effort.
