in Bill Callahan's "Jim Cain"
it sounds like a volume swell with either a volume pedal or simple guitar knob through some kind of vibrato and probably delay to sustain itB i can make a similar sound witha deluxe memory man
ehx memory boy or malekko 616 are alot cheaper than the memory man but could do the job
It's the strange kinda stringy / organ chords in the background
but the other weird bendy sound that comes in towards the middle im pretty sure is a guitar volume swell
it is the stars of the lid trick, i could be talking about a different part though
could be that.
that you mean the muffled swelly thing that surrounds the strings?
To be honest it's quite difficult to tell what the original instrument is as it seems it's just the effect without any of the original signal, could be guitar, strings, harmonium, mellotron etc, but slightly phased and heavily reverbed (spring?)...
Absolutely no help whatsoever, sorry.
Just wanted to say I love this track, and is now on repeat since I read this thread...
anything played with the volume muted and then brought up after the notes been struck will sound like that, i still think the delay with modulation is the best bet for that kind of texture
chances are its a load of EQ'ed-to-fuck layers of sounds. It's probably a mellotron with a sampler or just some simple synth with a slow attack and loads of reverb.
