Kath Bloom shows this weekend

I saw kath bloom play twice at cafe OTO this weekend and she was really remarkable.
She is not so well known over here but loved by Scout Nibblett and Bill Callahan (who did a beautiful cover of her Bill Callahan 'The breeze my baby cries' on the 'Loving Takes This Course' (Chapter Music) and many others.
Her new album is released on Mark Kozelek's own label and you can't help but fall in love with her natural and very human songs and her other worldly wavering voice.
She has been playing for many years and I think now is the right time for her to reach a wider audience, as the new folk/post folk scene has taken off and although Kath is from the original 60's folk era, her music is quite similar, albeit in an unaffected way to the celebrated folk acts of today.
Kath is really something special and you have to check her out!
I podcasted her set from teh saturday show here at http://www.damnably.com/ and her site is at www.myspace.com/kathbloomchapter

  • As it happens I was going to start a Kath Bloom thread the other day.

She's really fantastic. I meant to get down to those shows at Oto, but couldn't make it in the end.
I've got Thin Thin Line on order, but my favourite stuff of recent year has to be the Chapter Music reissues of the two albums she made with Loren Connors in the 80s, Sing The Children Over / Sand In My Shoe and Restless Faithful Desperate / Moonlight. She has a such a beautiful voice on that record, and it's hard not to trace her lineage forward to the popularity people like Vic Chestnut, for example.
I think giving her a bit of exposure is the best thing Richard Linklater has ever done, to be honest.

  • I love Kath Bloom

    I wish she'd done a show up here :(

What do you think of the new album? It seems to have reviewed well, I like it but I think it's going to be more of a grower.

  • Just listened to the podcast you records. Thanks for that.

Sounded wonderful. Really regret missing it to be honest. She played last year as well though, so hopefully she'll be back next.
