thoughts? curious what the radiohead cover will be like.
That version of Street Spirit is gloomy
I think if you're gonna cover a song you could at least shake it up a little. Gabriel's version seems overindulgent for a song that I enjoy for its tender and subtle timbres. He's tried to make Bon Iver palatable for my parents, when Bon Iver's already palatable for my parents, except they don't get it.
I've just listened to his cover of Apres Moi by Regina and it's very impressive. That's the kind of song that lends itself well to a touch of epicicity. Nothing else really grabs me.
I was initially excited to get to hear him cover Elbow, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, etc. But to me Gabriel is a masterful producer, a person who can command countless things doing their own things and merging into a beautiful armada of tiny details and gorgeous sounds. And when he strips himself down to just voice and strings... it just sounds a bit lacking to me. I know it's a case of self-inflicted hype and all but I really wished he would have gone all the way. The songs I've heard, and the ones I'm checking through the site linked right now, don't really sway my opinion: it's all pleasant and nice and stuff but breezes through the ears.
I'm more excited about I'll Scratch Yours now.
