DiS Users Albums of the Noughties - Results
You all voted for 417 albums in total, but the majority of these recieved just the one vote. I was toying with the idea of putting up a top 100, but in the 50-100 part, there are far too many albums sharing equal points. The Top 50 that I've compiled, is much more cohesive I think, with only a few albums sharing equal points.
I decided at the last minute to award an extra point to each #1 album. So 20 for 1st, 18 for 2nd...10 for 10th. Seemed a more considered system.

Arcade Fire
Radiohead
Interpol
Panda Bear
never mind Funeral
the top 3 are really streets ahead of the rest. they're sort of everyone choice albums though
Funeral was consistant.
It didn't get as many top marks as Kid A, but much more people voted for it.
wot no...
...LIARS?
Number 19?
AARRGGHHH!!! Shit!
Forgot-
13.At the Drive in - Relationship of Command ...155 points.
Squeeze it in after The Knife and before Sigur Ros.
Fuck fuck fuck
It's now a top 51. To hell with convention.
My Scott Walker blunder prevented it from being 31st
Sorry Scott! Not surprised by the top 3 at all. Surprised Cryptograms is in there and Microcastle isn't but that's a better list than a lot of places. Although the omission of any hip hop/rap albums is slightly disconcerting.
Some Hip Hop/Rap Albums picked up points.
But there were none anywhere near the top 50. I like Hip Hop, but I do think a Great Hip Hip album is a rare thing indeed.
Madvilliany
For one
Madvilliany got 44 points.
It would have been placed #60-65
Stankonia
where'd Speakerboxxx/TLB, The College Dropout, Blueprint, Stankonia, Original Pirate Material, Marshall Mathers LP and Boy In Da Corner all place?
When I'm at home tomorrow, and have access to the results
I'll post a select number of non Indie albums, and the points they recieved. Should be able to work out roughly where they each fit in from that. Of the albums above, I think only Eminem didn't get any votes.
gwarn then
I will get on to this, but can't be arsed right now.
About to go the pub for a nice Roast Dinner. I'll do it later.
dude, it's a Sunday
it's cool
Had roast Pork belly, it was lovely.
Maybe we should do a separate thread for rap/hip-hop albums.
Then again, it would be difficult to pin down what exactly these words mean, for example, I have no idea if a band like Subtle qualifies as hip-hop.
Top 51?! Pah, well that just voids it all then!
No, really, top stuff, cheers for making the effort... it's nice to see a top 50 where I actually own/have heard of a majority, now if you'll excuse me I'm off to dance around like a loon at the fact that two.. TWO.. Idlewild albums made the top fifty (one)... Brilliant!
Interesting that there's only one 2009 album (I think)
and three(?)from 2008.
not as embarassing as your continued existence
What's the Sufjan Stevens album at 5?
Oh! I should have taken more time checking it.
Illinois of course.
Sometimes I forget
how single-minded the lot of DiS users are.
Not that these aren't good albums, but just... wheres the variation?
well, it's popular albums that are bound to make it into the list
these are just albums people have in common. i do think it's a bit of a boring list but i own about 15 of them, so. It doesn't mean everyone here just listens to indie.
i still really don't see the fuss about Funeral, mind.
I would agree with this.
I was hoping there would be a few more surprises in there myself.
However 6 of my choices did end up in the top ten...
I know we don't all listen to indie only.
I just think it would be cool if we had a list that actually reflected that.
i think the list of 200-400 would be that list.
Lets see it then.
:)
I'm so indie that I only look at the bottom halves of Albums of the Year lists.
(safety wink etc)
*un-indie
That's a pretty bad list.
90s >>>>>>> 00s
I listen to a wide range of genres
As do most people on here. But the request wasn't for an eclectic top 10 of the last 10 years, but a top 10 of personal favourite albums. Of those polled, this list obviously reflects that. It was always going to be populist to an extent.
eurgh
Get to fuck
Seriously - what is wrong with some of these comments?
Do you people have no idea of statistics and how it works?
Of course 'crazy left field album name here' isn't going to top a list that is the combined work of lots of users -DUH! Of course it is safe and predictable - it couldn't have been anything else. Stop bitching, what did you expect?
AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Chill dood.
I am not mad at it, just think its... boring, single-minded, cliche, predictable, etc.
I get it, its a 'popular' list. All I was saying is that its a shame how unoriginal the lot can be. I see so much more interesting discussion on the boards and forget that the majority are out there with Radiohead and Bloc Party on repeat.
not really
the idea of a consensus behind Funeral being that strong is depressing and not that predictable to be honest (from my perspective). The disparity between the top number of votes and the fourth and fifth most is pretty big too, if there weren't these few "clasic" albums I think the list might be a little more skewed towards quality rather than status. Who am I to judge, though?
I think we should do this poll again
but allow me to veto any lists I think are boring
I think you should collate the stats!
It's a lot more labour intensive than it appears. I lost interest after a couple of hours.
Thanks to Midnight Rambler for putting in so much effort.
Very cool, indeed. I reckon the results are decent even if they aren't mind-blowingly original. It beats NME's top 50 in my opinion, and it offers a more British perspective compared with Pitchfork's list.
If anything it shows you albums that were better received by the public than they were by the critics, which in itself is rather interesting.
^ this
thanks so much.
Can't say i agree with much of the list, but compiling that takes lots of effort, so a heads up to you.
The stats geek in me comes out to play

So, in terms of basic numbers y'all thought 2002, 2006 & 2007 were the strongest and that 2004 and 2009 both had little going for them; in 09's case we can put this partly down to the need for some records to grow in stature over time but 2004 looks very lacking (Funeral was a '05 release outside of North America, else it would've of course topped that year; as it would any). Of course, in this we can't tell that 2005 had four records out of its six in the top 10 overall but it's nice to get a different perspective.
Some records that have proved very popular in aggregate EOD lists but failed to show up in our top 51 include: The College Dropout, Original Pirate Material, Whatever People Say..., both Elephant and White Blood Cells, Stankonia, The Marshall Mathers LP, Songs For The Deaf, Boy In Da Corner, XTRMNTR, Vampire Weekend, The Blueprint, Fleet Foxes and Chutes Too Narrow. So, yeah, a lot of hip-hop or variants thereof in that.
oh and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
Weird
coz 2004 is the pick of the years, in my opine. So many great albums from that year.
Then again, that probably explains the low representation: since there were so many good albums from that year, it split the vote.
i like it
really like the list, good work.the top 4 is the same as my top 4 would be just in different order.
No Smog/Bill Callahan?!
But that gobshite Bon Iver is there?! Outrage.
Good list. Personally i'm surprised to see that the following failed to make it:-
Blonde Redhead - 23
The Walkmen - You & Me
David Thomas Broughton - The Complete Guide To Insufficiency
Doves - The Last Broadcast
Fever Ray - s/t
Howling Bells - s/t
My Morning Jacket - Z
Queens of the Stone Age (Songs For The Deaf) HOW THE FUCK WAS THIS MISSED?!?!?!
Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
I remember no one choosing Arcade Fire
I thought Interpol got the most votes,
Both TOTBL and Kid A got 28 votes.
Funeral on the other hand, got an incredible 39 votes. I was very surprised that it came out on top, as I had thought that they were somehow less relevant than they were about 4 years ago. Although I like the album, I haven't listened to it in ages. I find their shtick a little too pompous for my liking.
When I was doing the count, I was willing either Radiohead or Interpol to overtake it.
:D Meadowlands made the top 25!
that‘s great for an album that maybe not so many people are aware of.
And the band have been dormant for so long it‘s heartening to see that good music is remembered without endless promotion from the press.
That's a fegging good list all things considered
and I'm usually the type of person who criticises the end-of-year lists that this site does. I honestly didn't expect it to be so good. I've got loads of these albums, most of them are excellent.
Nice to see GY!BE and of Montreal so high up, I'm also pleased with the 3 Sigur Ros albums being there. Then there's Arcade Fire, Interpol, At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta, Tool, Radiohead (mainly for Kid A), TVOTR, Liars, Why?, Trail of Dead etc.
Thanks for the effort Midnight_Rambler.
No 65dos though, what's with that? Probably too much division between the albums for any of them to get enough votes.
i'm so surprised to see 'In Rainbows' that high.
Incredibly average album, especially in comparison to their other work this decade. However, it's all opinion...
