don't mean to brag or anything, but how long ago did I say this was gonna happen?..
I'm seeing El-B on Friday, hopefully he'll play a bunch of the new Ghost material.
jimitheexploder is wanking himself into a frenzy.
It's pretty good but I hope he steps it up a bit for this next album. It's all a bit Burial-by-numbers sometimes.
But I reckon that track is a massive step forward and change in sound and texture from the stuff on Untrue. Not so convinced by this one yet, but I'll have to give it time.
It's a massive step from the stuff on Untrue - just as Untrue was definitely a change from the self-titled. It's far more subdued but so much more musically interesting. Ditto the new track Kode9's been playing a lot over the last year (it's been tentatively titled 'Lambeth' I think).
Sure it sounds like Burial - but then it's Burial, you'd hardly expect him to go away and make a rave album.
after about 10 or so listens and for that matter, anyone similar to Burial. A lot of comments seem to be based on a first impression whereas I can't believe anyone 'got' "Burial" straight away. I haven't heard this one yet but i'll reserve judgement until i've given it quite a few listens.
Untrue: definitely a grower.
Fairly immediate, especially compared to the first one, which took a fair few listens to really sink in.
I posted the track from a mix a few weeks back now, so I've got over the wanking ;)
It's alright, it usualy takes me a while to feel Burial's stuff and usualy like him better on his own too. But I really like the coldness of this one along with the old skool dark d'n'b ghostly rave flovaours. I need more listenes and a better quality before I make my mind up really.
Its cool to see collabs acctualy coming out though.
I kinda forgot about Burial for a while until 5 came out and Fostercare made me remember how good he is. That track is definitely a progression, I can't wait to hear a new record from him.
On a related note, the Clubroot record that came out last year has some similarities to Burial's style (muted 2-step beats, similar heavy sub bass sound) and it's really fucking good. Example here:
Particularly 'Lucid Dream', 'Talisman' and 'Sempiternal', they're absolutely gorgeous. They immediately made me think of London in JG Ballard's Drowned World - like Burial's music submerged in tropical waters and eerie, rippling light.
I managed to get one of the limited edition vinyl presses of his album (with a free CD copy, which is far better than having to pay thirteen quid for it on mail order). I'd only had it on mp3 before, and they've done an excellent mastering job on the press - the bass is totally all-encompassing, more danceable but also more immersive. I think I may have to listen to it again this evening...
Kryptic Minds have a simular Burial vibe going on, but a less garage infused sound that has a big budget wide screen sound instead of ghostly bedroom garage. They're dark and really atmospheric.
does anyway on Loefah's Swamp 81 label, they make a lot of d'n'b too but I couldn't really get into that.
Tis a good un. 2nd album coming soon apparently.
That 'Fire Fly' track he gave away last year was great as well (I think Jimi linked to it at the time?).
