It reminds me of Selected Ambient Works era Aphex Twin and Plaid, maybe other Warp stuff too. Which is cool, but I've already got some of that in my collection. Its a little bit 'windchime house' or 'buying new-age bathsalt boogie' at times, the middle dips a little too but it picks up at the end again and its all nice enough. This Bliss took quite a while to bubble under so I wont give up, but I don't know if I'll buy it until the kill of the stream...
And it's nice. "Windchime House", that's funny. It sounds like Boys Noize and Animal Collective teaming up making minimal techno.
I was wondering wether to buy it, so listened to the stream again.
I'm still on the fence, I love This Bliss to bits but it took me quite a while to really feel its subtle sounds. I think Animal Collective count Pantha Du Prince as a big influence so that makes sense. Boys Noize arn't subtle enough for a comparison, I always acosiate them with aggi electo anyway... I wouldn't say Pantha Du Prince is minimal techno either, he's to soft to be techno and to dense and melodic to be minimal. Thats why 'Windchime House' is a good fit haha.
and he said that he could understand why. Utter utter prick.
Yeah its really not minimal its not stright up dance floor bleep material at all. Plus no one says minimal anymore since everyone got bored of the turm a few years ago after to much derivative mnml by numbers clogging up the place... He's never really been minimal either, This Bliss was a little more techno and less organic than this one, but this is stright up Pantha du Prince and his own vision of house if anything.
I'm going to need lots of late nights with this one I think, it might be one of those I just buy and find myself digging out and it'll eventualy fall into place. I'll cave in and buy it soon, I've not bought an album this year yet, just loads of 12"s, I'm getting itchy.
Also he's from berlin.
Its odd, I don't get it at all, i'm listening to satellite snyper right now, it's building with this euphoric melody in the background. Its almost the antithesis to mnml.
Not really important tbh, it's fun and novel that I can be a pedant about house music though.
It might have got away with being called minimal, just.
But the sound has changed a lot and even Villalobos doesn't really fit it anymore and he's loads closer to minimal than Pantha du Prince.
Its not really important no, but then I think DiS would snigger if RA called some metal band indie just because they used guitars haha.
I've listened to that free stream of it a good few times now, it's really not doing much for me at all. Like, all of the elements of This Bliss which made me like it so much seem to have either disappeared or have been moved to the back. Most tracks seem to sound more or less the same as one another, the omnipresent chimes, lack of any real dynamic tension or rhythmic variation within the tracks. It just so much more 'full' sounding then his previous stuff that it's kind of off-putting, previously it's was quitely euphoric but weightless (like on Saturn Strobe or Steiner Im Flug).
That first track (Lay In A Shimmer is it?) is pleasant enough, but after that it just settles into such a confortable groove with itself that it makes for a dull listen overall. And that track with the Animal Collective chap singing over it is absolutely horrible. It's by no means a bad album, but personally I'm not feeling it at all right now.
the washed-out Mountains-style drone on the last few tracks is bloody lovely.
