Flying Lotus - Los Angeles. Utter brilliance....or not?!
Hey everyone, hope all is well!
Recently purchased LA on vinyl and its one of the few electronic records I have which I do not get the least bit bored listening to.
From start to finish there is a noticeable but at the same time subtle shift in sound/mood. I haven't been able to notice this yet from similar artists - he seems like he knows exactly where he wants things to go. I just think this guy is really going to change how we perceive electronic music with his next record. Or am I just being excited? :P
It makes me wonder what he's going to try now. Is this the future of electronic music or just rehashed post hip-hop noise?
Start discussion.....now!
Cheers

Flying Lotus
Stunning album; my favourite from '08 by a country mile.
Also see: Nosaj Thing
he's brilliant
I agree with the above too. J Dilla was an influence on FlyLo so if you want to hear something older then maybe get Donuts as its very good indeed. Then for some newer stuff I'd go for Burial, FaltyDL, Floating Points, Lukid... none of them really sound like Flying Lotus as such they just manage a simular vibe somehow but from diffrent angels. I'm pretty damn excited to hear his new album, which is due sometime early this year. I hope you find more electronic albums that you don't find boring hahah

Reset EP by Flying Lotus
is amazing, this makes me melt...

also my favourite album from 08.
absolute brilliance all the way through.
I wholeheartedly endorse this thread's content
i have to say special mention
for closing track, Infinitum, which is an incredible track.
no you are wrong
madlib was the future
flylo is just the nerdy version for europeans.
a bit like fusion was to jazz
Madlib is brilliant too
I like your name, it sounds like you're a '92 rave MC *HORN!!!!!* ALL YOU RAVERS CHECK THESE FLAVOURS DROPPING CHEESEY PIANO LICKS LIKE QUAVERS!!!! *HORN!!!*
I think FlyLo and Madlib are aming for slightly diffrent things, Madlib is more hip-hop FlyLo is more spaced out and dancey somehow. Plus FlyLo is big in LA and all that, its not just the EU...
thanks , your name sounds like a romainian porn star
i just think that flylo is hype over substance.
laptop hiphop , nothing new really.
He's definitely brilliant
A couple of other (less 'organic' sounding than LA) tracks he's done outside of that LP that are incredible:

Lil Wayne - I Feel Like Dying (FlyLo remix): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--IeEcEir7E
As far as I'm concerned
Los Angeles sits alongside DJ Shadow's Endtroducing and RJD2's Deadringer as the zenith of instrumental hip-hop.
I prefer listening to 1983 and Reset EP
There's just more happening on those records, soundswise. 1983, especially has something of a raw edge, which on LA has been lost, probably to production. Haven't listened to LA for a long time now, so I might have changed my mind again.
Very excited about the new album! FlyLo is doing something different, or has the potential to do so.
Cheers for all your replies! I like a debate. Yeah, after listening to it again it really does remind me of DJ Shadow and comparable artists.
Track 4 - Camel, is my favourite on LA. Love the groove and mixing up with the vocals cleverly. Will check out the reset EP and some of the other artists mentioned here!
Excited too!
Yes
This is superb. Particularly the first couple of tracks. And a run of them in the middle. I like Flying Lotus.
Also, anyone have any word on UK live dates? Because that would be very nice indeed.
Other new artists
Hey check out Alice another artist on the contemporary electronic music scene. http://www.youtube.com//watch?v=-59FoTsqJ-E

What the fuck is your problem?
