All their decade coverage has been ace really. I'm embarrased I don't think I've heard their no. 1 though and I need to hear that Sebbo track.
Pretty cool though, its reminded me about some 12"s I need to dig out again and loads I should probibly check out.
the breakbeat garage is covered... kinda with Zinc and Skream/Benga where their from the start with dubstep plus Coki but without Mala, I dunno if you'd have Shackleton or Burial or half the scene which then happened to sporn Joker and Joy Orbison haha. Mala is key really, he's not had a cross over track like those lot have but that doesn't seem to bother RA when they're talking about techno and house or electro. Mala rules!
It's odd how, though dance music is really single-based, a singles chart doesn't really sum it up. A chart of overall influence would be more accurate, including Mala obv. - tbh, I even thought their album chart was more accurate - http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1144 , wheras singles sum up the scene, full-lengths sum up the big statements.
RA are always more interested in its techno though - don't know what all that LCD soundsystem bollocks is about though, but nice to see Shack/Villalobos remix mentioned.
just one Mala would have been about right for RA as its mostly A techno/house site, which is cool by me. Its been doing some good catching up this last year with dubstep though.
they don't try and cover everything, just dance... no urban either really. Specialists, if everyone tryed to cover everything they'd miss a fuck load of pure gold that didn't happen to cross over. Nowt wrong with that.
i'd much prefer a bit of specialism than the one size fits all cross genre box ticking you might get elsewhere
not actually heard many of the top 10, but there's some proper jams down the list. I'll peep
one size fits all just doesn't work for music. Its good that there are still places that specialise more and go a bit deeper than others. Its not like they're pretending there isn't any other music in existance they're just doing what they do.
In it's original form here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uphhtm1fWVY
Or the remix form here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uphhtm1fWVY and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?
Or this (no. 55), which is probably my favourite on the whole list: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O53-C8fMXhI

but still got big issues with it. i agree with jimi about mala, but one hip-hop joint is silly. wouldn't have minded if they didn't include any, but to include just 1 is wrong. people say hip-hop is dying, dead, blah blah, but it was the biggest dance music genre of that decade i think, both in popularity and innovation. roots manuva, but no neptunes, timbaland or just blaze. damn.
also never understood the fuss about ame- rej. it's good, but sounds like a pale imitation of isolee- beau mot plage to me, weird that rej is in the list let alone at 3.
oh yeah, the joe muggs piece on pangaea in this months wire was interesting, based it on pangaea hearing mala out at the west indian centre in 2005.
saint cronin isn't familiar with anything on the list, but sure i've heard him say something like what he considers the cannon is correct, how can he be so sure if he ain't heard any of this stuff? maybe he was joking. i've heard most of the stuff he talks about and most of the ra stuff, but i ain't as confident in my opinions as him.
He'll play anything from Steve Reich to Joker and loads of his own dubs inbetween. In fact I think he even cut Steve Reich onto dubplate so he can play him out hahah
They where vaugly tokanistic when it came to a few things, but didn't stray to far from their remit/knowledge. It could have been loads worse haha I only did a double take with Mylo... I mean come on...
I'd forgot how ace these are: Octave One feat. Ann Saunderson - Blackwater / Laurent Garnier - Man With The Red Face / Funk D'Void - Diabla / Chicken Lips - He Not In / Underground Resistance - Transition the b-side of this one is insane too, I've not really stopped playing that though / Der Zyklus - Formenverwandler
Beau mot plage is such a beauty.
wonder what it'd sound like mixed in with t-pain, can't believe it. mmm, vocoders.
we had a chat on here about blackwater ages ago, probably hard to find that.
have you heard chicken lips dj kicks mix? it's incredible.
i remember watching a top of the pops with my dad and uncle and 3 of these songs were on- marky- lk, fishcerspooner- emerge and tiga- sunglasses at night. they said all 3 were crap. those were the songs playing in the clubs and i was happy.
I know I've got one of their mixes somewhere I use to buy loads of their 12"s too.
Emerge is a wicked track, there is a mix tiga did for International DeeJay Gigolo's that I was addicted too and it had all the electro clash bangers on it and Emerge sounded awsome on it. That was the peak and death of electro clash really for me. http://www.discogs.com/Various-American-Gigolo/master/55926 Bloody brilliant.
tiga's essential mix was the best of last year for me and he was wicked at matter too.
my second time to matter tonight, best be off now, laters.
