are you being serious?! i can't tell but Owl City is a piece of fucking shit
Gisus a clue, I need something new to hate.
owl city is the product of a castrated loser in his basement, and the fact that he had a fluke number 1 hit really is angering
I mean it's nothing special but there's nothing especially awful about it. The vitriolic reactions of some websites/journalists/internet people are a bit OTT.
Really posters getting upset by something that really doesn't matter and will be over in a few weeks, nah that could never happen. Still I've never seen hitler and owlcity in the same place...
I also enjoyed his claim to have never heard of Postal Service...
it's clearly heavilly influenced by Postal Service, but it's a nice song. I've not heard anything else by him, and i've read that he doesn't have much variety, but still, fair play to the chap for getting a number one.
that its a direct rip-off of postal service, i dont think anyone including he could deny that. I just hate that i have to hear it everywhere i go
from sesame street
Why doesn't someone just start up a Facebook group to get them to number one instead - there's got to be plenty of people out there that would re-buy one of the singles. I remember selling an absolute crapload of it when i worked in a record shop :)
i can get behind. Give up is an album i never get sick of. I loved it when i got it when i was 14 and i'll probably always love it. Keep up the good work!
To get a condensation of the artwork for the District Sleeps Alone Tonight single tattooed on me somewhere. It may be some of my favorite artwork, ever. =)
before today! I was teaching 12 years old and we had five minutes before the end of the lesson so I let them choose a song on Spotify - They all clamoured for Owl City and Fireflies!
I know what to do next lesson, I'll play them the Postal Service version ...
Not only is it Postal Service rip-off musically (but a lot of bands are, let's face it), the guy has the unfortunate curse of sounding exactly like Ben Gibbard. And while I've listened to Death Cab since 1999 (and actually really like the early stuff), I can say that sounding like Ben Gibbard isn't really a good thing - unless you *are* Ben Gibbard, in which case you are in the ranks of indie untouchables.
Plus, the lyrics are embarrassing. Seriously, if I'd written that crap I'd never want my friends to know about it. So yeah, I guess my answer is yes.
...but whatever the next one is on Spotify makes me want to scream after a mere second or two of it - don't think I'll buying any albums!
although it is a massive rip of Postal Service there are certainly worse things that could be clogging up the radio
It's just an over-saccharine piece of throwaway radio 1 music like about a bejillion songs before it. Just this time it happens to sound a lot like a song you've spent the last decade crying to. You'll get over it.
painful to listen to
what about Owl City?
...of the whole Postal Service aesthetic. But with all the interesting bits taken out: since Owl City doesn't have the the avant-garde impulses hiding beneath the synth-pop sheen and Gibbard's erudite lyrics, the end result is twee and forgettable.
I guess so many people hate Owl City, because it reminds of a much better and much less successful band. When I heard Fireflies for the first time, I perked up within seconds – new Postal Service material!? - but when on closer inspection it turned out to be a rotten carbon copy, it's hard not to hate it after that.
completely sums up my feelings on the matter.... it really isn't hard to hate at all.
had a listen on spotify and I was just so angry that somebody could make this stuff and pretend they have never heard of the postal service. He must know how much of a rip off he is.
AMEN BROTHA AMEN LOL
I see them on itunes top 10, but haven't bothered to listen. Probably won't either. Haha. :D
It's made a fool of itself so many times.
Don't get the vitriol. Heard the song on TV the other day, thought it was alright but not something I'd ever go out of my way to listen to. Ke$ha's Tik Tok is a tune though.
Ke$ha = uffie rip off. discuss.
has this been mentioned already?
...sort of. My boyfriend played me some Ke$ha and the only person I could think to recommend him was Uffie. It's the vocal style that make them sound alike.
i can already tell you have a terrible taste in music... tik tok WTF. jesus christ
btw that last post was in response to daniel kelly
being able to tell someone's taste in music is "terrible" based on their opinion of one song
yeah well if you like that shit you have a bad taste in music... im sorry but that's a fucking disgrace! I would have to say owl city is better than ke$ha and owl city is terrible
some artists i like are dirty projectors, flaming lips, deer hunter, beach house, animal collective, the antlers, beck.... what do you like cilla crack
I only like Ke$ha and Enya. Soz.
enya is a beast man... very chill stuff! so i can deal... and yeah i do like a lot of indie stuff
yeah dude... totally. you must think your fuckin sweet man... your probably the bees knees yourself
And where do people find this music?
Talking of Kesha, if this was an instramental it would be amazing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCH1NS1PtNc;
as it is, it's alright.
The vocals on this track make it 100% unlistenable.
your blog/review of owl city is perfect...
'I've been to the dentist a thousand times so I know the drill'
'Golf and alcohol don't mix and that's why I don't drink and drive'
I've never seen the need for "this band that everyone likes are shit!" threads.
Not likin' a number one single!!! Could you be more rebellious? I really admire you man.
thanks dude! yeah i am pretty rebellious... actually that number 1 single sucked camel dicks so yeah
or "this band are shit threads are pointless".
At times I'm inclined to acquiesce to your point of view. But the problem with Owl City is the totall and utter plagiarism of The Postal Service. It is fucking RIDICULOUS. I think I'd like Owl City if TPS had never existed (terrible lyrics aside). But as it stands, the massive success of an "artist" who is nothing more than a carbon copy of another less successful artist makes my blood boil.
I know it's not worth getting worked up about... but it is a completely unavoidable knee jerk reaction for me I'm afraid.
If this thread was specifically to hate on a band like owl city, i might object, but its not. I
ts more than the fact that he produces sugary slime for music, his disregard for TPS is just ridiculous. To Replicate the music of such a great band, pick apart everything thats good about them, then act like you never heard of them is dusgraceful
You wouldn't be able to tell them apart if it weren't for the laughable failed attempt to copy Ben's lyrical style. There's no way he'd write lyrics that infantile and superficial.
From this thread I'm assuming he's like some phone advert song at number one in 'the charts'?
I have never heard it! Should i, or should i just not bother? It's only a few clicks of the mouse away...
If you hear it you'll do the slow clap followed by the suicide attempt.
just don't bother. his lyrics are ridiculous... "fox trot above head" "sock hop beneath my bed" the lyrics are so flamboyant i can't take it... by the way that was his #1 single
Probably never will listen to it now either.
i think the first one was done with a little more class though haha
probably better examples anyway
but I bet it's not as good as Bird World in Farnham.
I've heard it's a hoot.
I'm not sure why people are surprised that the artist responsible for the current number 1 single is unoriginal and unexciting.
We had an argument about it and everything...
the song does nothing for me but it's hardly the most offensive thing I've heard and the kids (who the charts are aimed at) love it so fucking what. Some of the so called hipster stuff people listen to on this site is far more aurally painful...
