Boris - Smile. Your thoughts....
I'm listening through the Southern Lord US version right now and some of this is just brilliant! Part of me can agree with some points in this pitchfork review: (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/11464-smile/) Like that its maybe a bit full on for some...but I think the first para is particularly harsh! I never know what to think of Pitchfork though...hmmmm I digress
I like how relentless it all is, its quite a sprawling masterpiece even if I do say so myself! Parts of it make me think of Pink Floyd psychedelic prog stuff. What do you lot think? Anyone know more about the band apart from just reading whats on wiki?
Its not like much I've heard before. I always find that exciting.
What I don't get though is why this band doesn't get more coverage? Is it simply because its basically quite ''underground'' and not the most accessible music due to the vocals etc ? Is there really such a thing as underground music nowadays anyway? Aren't we supposed to promote this kind of experimentalism...or am I simply reading the wrong magazines/sites?
Anyway, I look forward to hearing your thoughts :)
I could never quite get into it
Like I can with Pink and Akuma No Uta - I had heard the Japanese version was better?
Fair enough - I wonder how they differ? The versions that is. I havent heard those other two records you've listed. They worth looking into?
Definitely
Especially Pink
I love Pink
but Smile doesn't do it for me. It's ok, but I dunno, lacks the aggro and the drive.
You need the Japanese mix of Smile in your life
The way it was mixed elevates it to being a truly stunning record. Very interesting process too...
Incidentally, my favourite Boris release is Dronevil Final, an instrumental double disc set that's intended to be played simultaneously. Both discs work equally well on their own though...it basically sounds like Godspeed's first record gone doom metal. More people need to hear it.
I've only heard the Japan Mix
but I like it, it's not quite as full-on/fun as 'Pink' but it still manages to combine some sublime riffs (particularly on 'Dead Destination') with heartfelt melancholia.
the japanese version is far better
true that most of it is the same (60-70%) but the bits that arent make it more like a sucker punch by mike tyson. In the same vein as The Stooges' Raw Power, the opening seconds of Search & Destroy do not sound as primal on the Bowie mix. Best Boris album Amplifier Worship or Feedbacker.
Cheers will check for the japanese version. Where could I order a nice packaged CD or vinyl of the japanese version? Or any of the other albums?
I love interesting music like this. Playing two cds simultaneously sounds a bit mad but why not try it right?! Brilliant.
Cheers will check it
