DiS' Song of the Day #11: UFFIE 'MCs Can Kiss'
This week's loose theme is a glance forward at 2010's debut albums and new bands I'm excited about...
'MCs Can Kiss' by Uffie
How can someone/something so potentially hateful be so addictive? From the the defensive hip-hop posturing about oneself in the third person to generally being a neon-mouthed gobshite, Uffie doesn't make loving her or her music particularly easy. She's such a product of the modern age and there's something admirable about her putting her petulant self so far out there, personified and cranked to a hundred and eleven in her songs, it's both fascinating and bewildering to watch and consume.
This track is a real step up, soaring far and away beyond Ke$ha. It's bashed and bent disco, with hints of the Les Rythmes Digitales '(Hey You) What's That Sound'-ish in the opening. Uff' rants from the start to the silly brass at the end, offering emcee's a chance to kiss her ass and, essentially, this song hugs the haters, acting as a retort to those she's caught saying retarded shit on messageboards and in comment sections. What a awesome call and response 'MCs Can Kiss' is. Yet, as ridiculously fresh and catchy as it is, it's also divisive (she's the ultimate "marmite" artist!) and contrary, as the song is jolting, jarring and clashing with itself.
Uffie's Mr Oizo produced debut album has been a long time coming but Sex, Dreams & Denim Jeans will see the light of day via Ed Banger/Because in the Spring, with this single preceding it on Feb 1st.
