they have loads of bands i like
if only for the wonderful packaging they use and the awesome people you'd get to meet at the Christmas party.
and went to a party one time; Chris Morris was there, and apparently the experience of seeing him the flesh did not disappoint as he stood in a corner all night, not talking to anyone, drinking pints, and wearing wellies and a trenchcoat. I mean... can you imagine how awesome it would be.
They've got great bands, got a great ethic and Elliot Smith was signed to them in the UK...
They release a lot of material that is sonically similar to the kind of music I aspire to make and ,possibly due to the small number of artists signed to the label they seem to have this real 'family' vibe going over there.
Best label ever. FACT!
IF YOU SIGNED TO A RECORD LABEL WHAT KIND OF RECORD LABEL WOULD YOU BE OOH SURPRISE CHUCKA LORRA LORRA BLINDA DATA
so kim hiorthoy has to do your cover art..........or ghostbox cos then u get julian house having to do your artwork...yeeha!
Young God because it was the label Devendra Banhart initially was on. Or Gnomosong...because it's Devendra Banhart's label.
or Subpop, or what is was anyway.
Fuck artistic integrity and not selling out. I want shitloads of pork pie.
as they seem to nurture bands, which is a rare thing these days, and when they blow up like arcade fire the label doesn't immediately have a meltdown trying to deal with it - plus the guy who wrote Slack Motherfucker as your boss!
Merge, fo' sho'.
Great book on Merge http://www.culturebully.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/our-noise-merge-records.jpg
Lambchop, for example, sell jack shit in America but Merge stick with bands they like and are now, of course, helped by major success of bands like Arcade Fire.
And, yeah, Mac and Laura are super duper.
Paintings of Ships will be sending them an EP! ;)
I heard an interview with the Mac and Laura on All Songs Considered one day -- nice as you can be. They're one of the more personal and warm labels around, which I really, really like.
There are the bigger ones (i.e. Sub Pop, Matador, etc.) that would be neat, plus the really small ones that nobody ever thinks about (i.e. Secretly Canadian, Sincerely Yours, etc.) would be cool.
Oh, and Woodsist would be a good choice, with the records they've been releasing.
Sincerely Yours, 'cause I'm all about those Scandinavian synths these days.
its all in the name ;)
Mentality of an indie label, with the resources (distribution and marketing at least) of a major.
And I'd like my band to be friends with The Young Knives and Foals.
Failing that, Big Scary Monsters.
if only to get a look at Madlib's vinyl collection.
Mostly for the history, but also so I could pop down to the warehouse and see how Mark Arm is coping with the enormous demand for my album.
