DiS' Song of the Day #10: LYKKE LI 'Complaint Department'
'Complaint Department' by Lykke Li
Lykke Li is divisive in ways that are quite unexpected. On the one hand, some girls I know love her because she writes great bedroom-turned-dancefloor pop, like a scandi Bat for Lashes swinging from Madonna's chandelier. On the other, girls hate her because guys tend to get obsessed with listening to her on headphones, their eyes lost in some filthy daydream. What's odd, is her debut lp Youth Novels, awash in a sea of Feist and Santigold, sort of got lost, with little debate about its merits and few people singing its praises. And to be honest, I saw her live at SXSW having heard some early demo tracks on blogs, listened to the LP a couple of times and it sort of past me by until one dreary day I misclicked my iPod and her drizzly-disco began pouring out.
People often talk about albums you have to listen to on headphones in the right context and often it sounds like bullshit but this song in particular is perfect for the heavy grey day we're currently enduring in London today. It sounds like the beginning of the end of a party, it sounds like what other people hear when they hear Ellie Goulding, it sounds like she's an Uffie you could take home to meet your mother and, above all, it sounds like more people should be anticipating the follow-up lp later this year.
