every time. The Winner Takes It All is the most perfectly arranged pop song there is. I get goosebumps just thinking about that song, even though I've listened to it thousands of times.
Also their final album The Visitors is brilliant. It's a really weird album for them with no typical pop songs on it and all the arrangements and harmonies are so complicated. It's a dark album too, as Anni-Frid and Benny divorced a month or so before the recording of the album and the lyrics reflect the fraught relationships they had with each other too.
An ex girlfriend of mine was Swedish and she said that she's kind embarrassed by them and thought that their English was terrible. I don't think that at all, if anything the starkness and simplicity of their lyrics is what makes their songs so good.
In many ways i'm disgusted that they let all these musicals and films be made since they split because it cheapens them so much. The songs are so much bigger than any of that to me.
If i could pick any band alive or dead to go and see i'd go see ABBA, and ideally performing all of the Visitors and the hits. This is over Nirvana, The Smiths, The Birthday Party, Can, Talking Heads, Kyuss, Tom Waits... as much as love those guys ABBA would be my number one choice.
I realize I've probably lost about twenty jazillion indie points with the post but yeah, whatever.
abba
they brought the pop
The Carpenters
Karen had the sweetest voice this side of Mimi Parker, and Richard's arrangements are truly awesome. He can't sing for shit though.
ABBA
Definitely - the palindromic music of my childhood.
childhood as in my mum used to play it when I was a kid
not that I was a child when they were around, obvs
nice use of palindromic

Listen to that, there is so much going on in that song, but the vocals and harmonies are so rich! Wow.
