this looks great
please keep going!
will do! Long way to go to 2009, I mean 2010 ! Some interesting coverage of the emergence of Mudhoney, Nirvana, Fugazi coming up... stay tuned...
back on it
Right folks, thanks for the hits / comments. Really appreciated, any plugs do help spur me on to get to 2010 (some way away!). I'm back on it writing now (well in a minute or so!). Thanks.
This is good.
Cheers, updating it right now...
£16 for Glastonbury?
Man...
I like this. If you're going to do it right up to the current day, it probably deserves its own blog and a seperate entry per show. Oh, and a common format for all of them.
Great idea
I'll look into doing that - it's a cool idea. I'm a bit too into the write-ups at the moment and will tailor / edit it all at some point. Yes I remember buying my £16 Glasto ticket for Glastonbury thinking it was expensive!
This is just great!
this is great!
been planning to do this myself. will deffo do it now!
Thanks
Cheers gazbid (and all others). Go for it, i'm writing from memory and using an old note pad that has band, venue, price and a rating. Food now, then i'm back on it :-)
Good stuff!
I have a special interest in this, being a local and sharing a friend on facebook with you (Arran, who first posted a link to your blog). So far we only have 3 gigs in common, all unfortunately featuring The Mission. I'm sure that will increase as I; got older, moved to Brum from Redditch, and went to plenty more shows than my younger self. Don't forget to bump when you update!
there was worse than The Mission!
Thanks for the comment. Appreciated. I'm sure the gig paths will cross again in the updates soon. It'll get a tad less hardcore punk soon and a bit more... well Tad! Enjoy...
link
Not sure how it works but i've put my Twitter link in. Never had so many hits in a day. Thanks folks.
I had a list too, from 1994
put it into excel and then had my laptop nicked ;-(
Its a lovely site though, is the picture of the balcony dive one that you took?
i had the same with my list from 2000
but loving this read here, keep it up
Jeez
Jeez folks, my stats (as in views) have gone through the proverbial roof, i'm speechless! Thanks :-)
JJ I didn't take that pic unfortunatley, it's a great snap though that encapsulates the joy of a great live / lost in the moment - thing! Thanks to all on this site only found it today. I aim to contribute often. Also i'll clean up some of the grammar when possible - getting a but carried away getting it all out. Cheers folks.
bit more for today
Going to add a bit more this evening, stay tuned folks...
Last shameless plug...
Okay folks, again thanks for the comments and views. Last update for today up. Catch you soon. I'll try and work out at some point how to edit my profile and get more involved in this site somehow. Cheers, Charlie.
really enjoying this
as a brummie gig goer, hearing about these old venues, and the bands who played waaaay before I was old enough to go to concerts it's really interesting
on it again
Thanks lustforlife. Just added a brief update. Cheers Charlie.
This is amazing.
Some great bands, had a bit of a giggle at Gaye Bikers on Acid being fondly remembered by you. Jealous of the Siouxsie gigs though!
Am I right in thinking the Birmingham hippodrome in hurst st was where Smiths played with James? Thats quite a big venue...
Yes it was the Hippodrome
Hi suedeheadscot, yes it was the Birmingham Hippodrome for The Smiths gig, it was Meat Of Murder era Smiths, i've still got the program somewhere. After they finished the music (the record) of Oscillate Wildly ways played (Smiths instrumental) as people left the venue. I don't think the security expected the scenes that happened, (mad rush to the front, etc) and not many gigs have been hosted there since.
back at work
I'm chipping away at this again now if anyone wants to take a gander... Thanks
Pixies up
Pixies up on my gig blog readers...
more!
More stuff is up readers...
This is going to be totally epic
did you write everything down about all these early gigs or is it just from memory?
I have a box with tickets from all the gigs i have been to since i was about 14. I'm sure some of them didn't have tickets and i've forgotten about them though :(
I made a list once in word of all the bands i'd ever seen, got to about the 7th page and gave up :D good work dude.
all from an old school book
Thanks for the comment pretty_vacant. It's all from what started as an old school text book (blank). Later I made it into a word processed list consisting of; Band, Venue, Price, Support, Rate. I'm adding the detail (where possible from memory) and trying to link relevant videos, etc... Got to get to 2010 - many twist and changes along the way ahead. Enjoy!
this is great
i wish the smiths were my first gig.
Great stuff.
Thanks for sharing. A really fun read. Just took an hour to get through it up to the end of the 90s. And it's stopped just as you're getting to where I was getting into music myself (I'm approx 10 years your junior).
Nice to hear of the Brum references, too - I did a stint there from 97-05.
Oddly enough, I've just spent today going through old gig listings on last.fm to see what stuff is up there that I've been to. Managed to get most stuff from the last 5 years. But for anything before that, there's less than half the stuff I've been to. Not sure I'd be able to remember my gig history without any prompting so your notes will have been invaluable, I'm sure.
Brum
Thanks TheWza, nice comment, appreciated. I'm sure there'll be some crossover gigs coming up soon that maybe you attended too.
Cool.
It'll be interesting to see what crops up.
And for what it's worth - and at the risk of diverting from the music side of things - I agree about the League Cup.
The Smiths
Thanks for the comment champo. To be honest I was more blown away with the noise level than the band. As stated in brief review I don't think many in attendance relised the status they'd go to acheive - although they were still snowballing at the time (how apt!)
supremes 69,8yrs old
queen hyde park, kiki dee support,no elton tho i was fuckin gutted.
wowzers
wowzers! pre-dates me by a while - I thought I was the oldest (40) here!
Me too !
I'm 48 but I think brp just shades me. Maybe we should all form a band or something !

A bit of self indulgence. My own band have just made an appearance or two on my gig blog.

Cabbage 1989 split chronicled on the blog. Don't worry folks we reform in 2009 to play my 40th Birthday - i'll get to that soon :-)
Beasley Street
Sorry for the over indulgance - but I cannot stop watching Beasley St (John Cooper Clarke) on my blog - It's Fantastic...
I'm Back!
I'm back on the blog folks. Public Enemy 1990 is up....

great blog by the way
Cheers
Thanks skellywager
update soon re bayonetta
okay, I missed the planned Sunday update due to (over) playing Bayonetta... Will update this weekend if not before...
I'm so jealous of all your Godflesh gigs (among many others)
Loved that
Interesting to see Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry and Head of David in there. I've got a mate who rates both of those, and he was in the Midlands around that time. Would be amazed if he wasn't at one of those shows.
the warn Teepee_uk
Cheers you two for the comments, much appreciated. I'm pretty sure they were Godflesh's first gigs and they were truly gobsmacking - as the mini reviews suggest you either Got what they were doing or you didn't. If they hit you - they hit you hard. RLYL too were a cool live band and the track Chance is a big stand out for them... Thanks... Charlie
http://midnightpunk.wordpress.com
smiths
i was there also
Cool
first reply where someone has been to one of the gigs given a mini review. Thanks wolfamongwolves, good to hear, great gig.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan
That Napalm Death footage is SO good. Saw them live in 95 (i think) but to see them back in the back in the day would have been truly special. JEALOUS
Enjoying this/awaiting updates.
PE still had it when I saw 'em a year or two ago. They didn't wanna leave the stage.
Sorry for the downer, but this it really woulda been more suited to being spread as individual blog posts. Then I coulda subscribed to the RSS, and been updated as new stuff gets added. And that post/page is becoming a bit of a browser killer. :-/ Split it up. Milk it.
split
I will look at doing that ASAP, but as it stands i'm not sure how to change it. Should I post my next new gig on a new entry and every individual gig thereafter on a new post too. I guess this may work and then I can re-jig the earlier post when i've finished (if I ever finish!)
fucking brilliant blog
You should register on http://www.songkick.com/ and put all your gigs on there.
I managed to remember about 265 gigs but other ones keep sprining to mind, I have no idea of dates for my outstanding ones so can't add them. Wish i'd kept a diary.
songkick
Cheers erniebiff, i'll have a look at that site. In the meantime i'm adding new updates as new entries to help peoples browsers, etc. Is this format okay? Let me know before I get too carried away again. Comments very appreciated folks. Thanks. Charlie.
coffee's on!
Right folks, the coffee is on and the update is now...

Podcast
Podcast influenced by my gig blog up at http://midnightpunk.podomatic.com
2 Qs
Which record shop? PF? Or Sf/Temp/Other?
Did Goldwyn’s become The Foundry before getting 'regenerated'?)
Yes, Goldwyns did become The Foundary I think. It was kind of around the back from Edwards No.8 but bigger and kind of more physically underground.
Record Shop (an indie) : Full Time 1994 - 2001.
I only went to the Foundry/Goldwyn's a couple of times. Never seemed to have many gigs on that I could coax my uni mates to. Saw Electrasy there, IIRC. I remember it as quite a good venue so seeing Nirvana/L7 there in 90 would've been a proper treat.
As it is now: http://www.birminghamroundabout.co.uk/2009/goldwyns-nightclub-suffolk-place/
The fire means that Eddies has also bitten the dust.
An indie store, 1994-2001? I'm gonna guess PF cos that closed about that time.
hard-ons are a great live band.
dude, this is a flashback to a time, when music still meant something. sniff... I'm getting nostalgic.:-)
Cheers madsquirrel
Thanks, they sure were good times. I'll get up to the present day soon hopefully on the blog...
Beastie Boys 1992 up
Just added a bit folks, up to Beastie Boys 1992 gig at The Hummingbird, Birmingham.... I'll get to 2010 (Johnny Foreigner) if it kills me!

Public Enemy return...
i'm updating the blog again folks...
To be fair,
most of the stuff up to now has been before 'our' time. There's probably more chance of stuff resonating now we're approaching the new millenium.
The odd bump for this is hardly the JAGathon that the indiediscs fella has been indulging in over the past few days/weeks.
Whatever. I've RSS-ed the blog. Job done.
updates QOTSA, getting near present day too...
Hi folks, thanks for the replies, appreciated. I'm updating the blog still and will probably get to the presnt day fairly quickly now as I start going to less and less gigs. Not time to get the slippers out just yet though...
I wonder if you've seen one of my gigs...
Probably not - if so I'd be expecting at least a 3/10.
Reading it now - great detail, and brings back memories of growing up in Brum!
what band
What band Nuts N Gum?
ACDC new post
just a new post for those that may be interested. Also as probably stated before, it's well worth going back to when it begins (the blog that is).... thanks.
brief update
brief update, more soon...
small update, nearly finshed
should have this finished soon...
Some interesting stuff. Totally agree with your reviews of QOTSA
and how they got worse and worse.
What music shop did you work in? Not Music Junction in SOlihull? That had a cake shop next door.....which I worked in!
Almost at the end!
It'll be a wrap soon. Thanks for all the hits, emails and comments, much appreciated. I'll have to go to more gigs I guess to keep this alive. Cheers folks...
That Fucking Champs/French Toast gig was indeed awesome!
cool blog brah
makes me wish I'd kept track of every gig I've ever been to :(
This will be finished... tonight!
After a year of posting on my gig blog - i'll have it finally finished tonight. I've really enjoyed writing it and all the comments from all over the place. Guess i'll have to attend more gigs in 2011...
Finished
