Highlight of a fustratingly patchy album.

Awesome key change. Boy, these guys have an ear for melody.

Frightened Rabbit
The Mars Volta
Grizzly Bear
Paramore
Something like...
1. The Leisure Society - A Short Weekend Begins With Longing
2. Grizzly Bear - While You Wait For The Others
3. Bat For Lashes - Moon and Moon
4. Telekinesis - Great Lakes
5. Blue Roses - I am Leaving
probably
1. Frightened Rabbit - Swim Until You Can't See Land
Somehow manages to be elegant and soaring like a flying pirate ship, fueled by some good whisky, obviously. With no Shins or National albums on the horizon, their record is quite likely to be my lp of the year*.
2. Paramore - Playing God
The perfect song to wake up to, ideally on repeat, as it begs for more and more listens. Still sounds like Jimmy Eat World doing Kelly Clarkson in the most glorious of ways.
3. Sufjan Stevens - You Are The Blood
Ridiculously overblown but incredible. Has all the elements of Animal Collective 'My Girls' and Grizzly Bear's 'Two Weeks' but it's like they've been cranked to a hundred and eleven.
4. The Maccabees - No Kind Words
Since the first time I've heard this its done something to me that leaves me feeling totally undone. Those fuck-off military drums, the space the lyrics are given... all of it, just marvelous.
5. Lady Gaga - Poker Face (Acoustic)
I'm as shocked as you that is is one of my songs of the year. It's incredible and the acoustic/piano version of it is sublime, giving all those mirrored lyrical inflections in the chorus a chance to sway around whilst her voice takes charge in this weirdly charming way. Probably not as good a pop song as anything Beyonce or Gwen Stefani have released this decade but it's a pretty close call.
* = although having said that LCD, Friendly Fires, Cut Copy, Deftones and M83 may all have exceptional newies in 2010. This year is going to be amazing!
oh and for my full 50 as a playlist
look here http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4138750-spotifriday--dis-editors-top-40-songs-of-2009
I think I prefer
William Powers as a Maccabees track. I think the lyrics are even better than No Kind Words!
Woohoo
Glad you liked the track that much Stiive. Have you got the free song yet from here (JAG city!): www.musicglue.com/catsandcatsandcats
But surely the best track on the Tubelord album is the last one, it's probably my track of the year. Followed by:
2 - Mew - Sometimes life isn't easy
3 - The joy formidable - Cradle
4 - Lime headed dog - Lorenzo (if that was this year)
5 - Marvins Revolt - Likewise
i'm going to go
1. Yeasayer - Tightrope
2. Phoenix - Girlfriend
3. Mount Kimbie - Maybes
4. Animal Collective - What Would I Want? Sky
5. Maccabees - Love You Better
obviously loads of others but this is a nice mix
Jay Z & Alicia Keys - Empire State Of Mind
Maccabees - No Kind Words
Animal Collective - My Girls
Arrows Of Love - Burn This Town
Bike For Three - All There Is To Say About Love
with honourary mentions for
The Antlers - Sylvia
Cold Cave - Heavenly Metals
and pretty much the whole of the Monsters of Folk album
Off the top of my head...
1. Atlas Sound - Quick Canal
2. Grizzly Bear - Ready, Able
3. Tune-Yards - FIYA
4. Dirty Projectors - Stillness Is The Move
5. Cryptacize - What You Can't See Is
mine
1. mastodon - the last baron

Darkstar - Aidy's Girl Is A Computer [Hyperdub]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlPCEuNUxYw
Its not just a year of love for this one, its been on dubplate for so long... maybe a year before it came out. And everytime I heard it on radio/mixes it was kinda special. Its a really bitter sweat garage meets freaky 8-bit computer malfunctions that sounds like a love song beamed thru space. Lookout for their album coming nect year it will no doubt be a bit good.
Instra:mental ft. dBridge - Watching You [Nonplus+]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AnyCPvYg9s
I've never really been into d'n'b, but Instra:mental and dBridge are doing things really diffrently. It's like they're bringing back old school b-boy electro but with a futuristic soulful element. Watching you is a really minimal meloncholic vocal number... again a love song beamed in from space. Watch out for their Fabirc mix early next year its going to be special.
Untold - Stop What You're Doing (James Blake Remix) [Hemlock]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClKhjCzLxc4
Two amazing producers... well James is more than that he can sing and alsorts! The original is something else, a beatless wiley eski style psychedelic grime track that shakes dancefloors to its core as much as it confuses it. But Mr Blake added his mad soulful vibe to it by adding more melody and lots of harmonise that added to it somehow without making it that much diffrent. I dunno the dude is just brilliant, its like what all R&B will sound like in the year 3010, check his solo stuff too...
Mala - Eyez
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSwqaV6BCFo
I wouldn't be doing dubstep right if I didn't include a track that isn't out yet in the list... Mala is a legend and this track has been killing it on radio and in clubs for most of the year and I have no idea if it will come out or not, but I can't get it out of my head. Its a really eerie alian transmition that channels the DMZ dubstep sound perfectly but adds this extra future soul dimention not unlike a london version of the detroit techno masters. I sing this round the house... wahhh wahhh wahwah wahwah wawah wahhhhhh
Guido ft. Aarya - Beautiful Complication [Punch Drunk]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vL487qSmOo
Again with the bitter sweat future soul, I just can't help it. Again this is a track thats been around since about 2008 maybe longer and its always moved me. So when it came out this year I was so happy. Timberland wishes he could be as good as this guy from Bristol. Heavy bass that sounds like purple heaven, orchestral florashes and a full vocal performance from Aarya thats just so good.
youtube doesn't do these tracks justice, but I didn't know how else to show you guys without taking you all to a club...
Instra:mental ft. dBridge - Watching You [Nonplus+]
Thanks for putting me on this mate, its really good
no probs
its a bit good, I can't stop playing it.
They're ones to keep an eye on: Instra:mental & dBridge they keep dropping amazing stuff. They're label Nonplus+ has a few releases now and each one is a bit special, Watching You is the one though... They have some podcast mixes as well full of fresh music from them and friends as well as loads of their influences, which could be whatever really... old electro, soul, funk, disco, d'n'b god knows what.
http://www.club-autonomic.com/
Plus a show on Rinse FM sometimes... you'll have to check http://www.rinse.fm/ for that though its a bit sporadic.
James Blake remix?
As in: http://www.tennisserver.com/lines/images/lines_05_08_09/Blake.jpg
?
haha
he wishes
http://thequietus.com/articles/02845-sonic-router-006-a-dubstep-column-for-october
oh yeah he wouldn't give us a picture... don't blame him!
...so that could be him!
or he could be the bus driver that told off Rosa Parks
but I think he might be dead.
If ever dubstep was gonna get on Jools Holland though, I reckon James Blake would be the man to put it there:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS2H-smyJy0 !
(if that's not christmas number one next year, i'll eat my tennis racket)
haha
yeah James Blake is a real talent, Mary Anne Hobbs has already said he'll be suporting Radiohead in no time he's that good. His solo stuff is insane, the Hemlock 12" is so good. Plus that stuff thats coming on BRAiNMATH soon with Airhead... It's looking very good indeed. I heard he's on with making an album as well, so we'll have to see what kinda thing he odes with that. Maybe very soulful and vocal like that link, who knows... he's just as insane with his 'dubstep' haha
oh yeah...
He's the live vocal element of Mount Kimbie too... they might kick up more of a storm this year too, they're shit hot. There are to many people around to just make a top 5 tracks... I mean Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison aint making my top five, let alone Joker, Zomby, Cooly G, Martin Kemp, Shortstuff, Brackles, Ramadanman, Geiom... a million others.
thank for this - loving james blake
Ok. One last list...
1)Brent Randall - Strange Love (Don't Be Lazy)
2)Louise Le May - Coal-Marble-Stone
3)Euros Childs - Like This Then Try This
4)Mari Persen - Sweetheart
5)The Clientele - I Wonder Who We Are
And here's mine...
5. Ellie Goulding - Under The Sheets
4. The Horrors - Sea Within A Sea
3. Julian Casablancas - 11th Dimension
2. The Sound Of Arrows - Into The Clouds
1. Erik Hassle - Hurtful
Although these five are just a short few, so I actually did a whole list of my favourite 40 songs of 2009 )) You can find it in my blog: http://randomtypes.blogspot.com
mine would be...
AB Machines - Sleigh Bells. Its just massive, aggressive and makes me want dance like I am 18 again, which is lovely.
Foreground - Grizzly Bear. Beautiful, only criticism is that it could go on for another 2 minutes with choir in a last euphoric chorus
We are Water - Health. Incredibly dancey angry track, the guitar riff reminds of a rave or techno hook and it has this constant bass rumble throughout carrying it along. Immense.
Two Dancers - Wild Beasts. Lyrically dextrous musically lush, from an album that made me actually use the word groove in a positive way.
Mount kimbie - Maybes. Really intriguing and innovative music, looking forward to these guys touring and releasing more stuff next year.
Lots of others also particularly honourable mention for No Kind Words by the maccabees as it is fantastic only undermined by the rest of the album lacking the maturity, darkness and introspection of the lead single.
.
Sunn 0))) - Alice, pure beauty.
Trouble Books - Endless Pool, this track just is my ideal bliss track.
I'm awful at picking out tracks from albums.
But my next would be a Six Organs track, a Pissed Jeans track and a talons' track.
Putting them in an order is asking a bit too much of me, but here's 5 tracks I absolutely adored this year, possibly in equal measures:
Bat For Lashes - Daniel
The Clientele - Never Anyone But You
The Veils - Larkspur
The Leisure Society - The Last of the Melting Snow
Girls - Hellhole Ratrace
And a few that just missed out...
Camera Obscura - French Navy
Mew - Introducing Palace Players
Beach House - Norway
The Low Anthem - Charlie Darwin
Jonsi & Alex - Boy 1904
chickenhawk NASA vs ESA
cobalt pregnant insect
hudson mohawke polkadot blues

The Bronx - Cell Mates
Dirty Projectors & David Byrne - Knotty Pine
Deep Sht - Hector
Joy Orbison - Hyph Mngo
Atlas Sound - Quick Canal
Burial & Four Tet - Moth
I WOULD SAY
1. Land of Kush - Against The Day - apocalyptic Middle Eastern gallop from Sam Shalibi + orchestra, kind of sounds like the world ending in the desert
2. 50 Foot Wave - Power+Light - basically a mini album, but it is one track SO THERE. The bit where the cellos come in sort of redefines all thoughts about Kristin Hersh
3. Tartufi - Engineering - sounds like a folk ballad left over by some gentle unfathomable alien civilisation.
4. George Pringle - Physical Education (Part 1) - I know she's a bit of a divisive figure, but when this takes of into this really heady loo-fi rewrite of I Feel Love then it becomes very awesome.
5. Some sort of short and snappy garage rock gem - it's been quite a good year for them, probably Losing My Accent by Nodzzz or Nothing to Hide by Yo La Tengo.
And I made a play for them, which I was supposed to have done for DiS, but didn't do in time, but is here (many of the tracks therein are not on the demon Spotify so, y'know...)
http://mrlukowski.blogspot.com/2009/12/lo-player-on-which-you-can-listen-to-my_4141.html
I don't think you can beat Wet Hair by Japandroids for a garage rock gem
It's so sweaty and anthemic. 'mazing.
Is that the one which sounds like Feeder?
Alright now
Shine - Antipop Consortium
It's a rap song about a Russian mafia hit on an artist. I can't really sell it more than that. Oh, the beat is incredible, sounds like John Carpenter having a freakout.
O God Protect Me - Ben Frost
This is a really atmospheric and deeply disturbing piece of music. It's basically minimalist doom or something. Actually terrifying: that hospital machine sound and that single dull thudding beat. I have to stop what I'm doing and wait until it finishes before I can get anything done.
House of Flying Daggers - Raekwon
I don't think there's been an opening track this good since...ever. Amazing J-Dilla beat is outshone by some incredible verses. Rhyming "mobster boss" with "angel hair with the lobster sauce" is so inspired it poleaxed me completely the first time I heard it; had to rewind to check I'd heard the right words.
Polvo - Beggar's Pole
Fuck the naysayers. This blows my mind every time. Must've played it at least 50 times by now, and every time it still gets me. That riff is up there with something like "Immigrant Song". The breakdown is massive as well.
9x Outta 10 - DJ Quik & Kurupt
... when it stops, it's gonna start again. Just stupendously addictive. Stuttering beat that's better than 'Tipsy', swaggering verbal acrobatics, and the cut up soul samples make me sit up every time.
Some that missed the cut: Pissed Jeans' Dream Smotherer, Wooden Shjips' Motorbike, Fuck Buttons' Space Mountain, Mos Def & Talib Kweli's History.
ahem * Beggar's Bowl
Beggar's Pole, sounds filthily freudian.
3 of yours are in
my top echelon as well. All the hip hop tracks if you were wondering.
woo this will waste a minute
Kevin Boyer - Something's Gonna Come Up
Blues Control - Tangier
Ducktails - Solar Panel
Bong - Set the controls for the heart of the sun
King Khan & The Shrines - Welfare Bread (re-released in 2009 so totally counts)
Mine...
1. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - Home (Live on Letterman) - The joyously infectious live version convinced me to take a chance on their album, and while it may be a touch too long, there are some real gems. Arcade Fire meets Tommy James and the Shondells. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qb9jY8yAxgs
2. Editors - Walk the Fleet Road - Lovely capper to a surprisingly dark and atmospheric album.
3. Johnny Foreigner - More Heart, Less Tongue - On a record full of noisy/catchy anthems, this is probably my fave, the most emotionally affecting.
4. The Twilight Sad - I Became a Prostitute - The guitar sounds like a monster trying to break out of a cage. Thundering chorus too.
5. Cold Cave - Youth and Lust - I probably got more electronic stuff this year than ever before, and this is the best tune of the lot.

It was a tough decision, they're all pretty ace tbh. They weren't actually 'released' I guess, but whatever. Too ace to miss off.
basically a thread of those "bits" : D
1) The Twilight Sad - "Interrupted"
Really hard to pick a favourite song off their new album but the vocals in the verses and the awesome guitar melody after the "You and I know" bit clinch it.
2) The Horrors - I Only Think Of You
The guitars?!?! Amazingly produced on the whole record but this song has the most awesomely wishy washy sound of them all. The vocals are lovely too...very bleak
3) Mogwai - Thank You space Expert
Utterly beautiful. One of my favourite songs by them in many a year. So glad they've been playing live as well
4) Lightning Bolt - Transmissionary
The most intense song they've ever written? Probably
5) Dinosuar Jr. - Ocean In The Way
Gut wrenching melodies all the way through and J sounds sadder than he has in ages. Really, really affecting song
Not easy this is it?...
1. Los Campesinos! - There Are Listed Buildings
2. Camera Obscura - French Navy
3. Burial/Four Tet - Wolf Cub/Moth
4. The Low Anthem - Charlie Darwin
5. The Drums - Let's Go Surfing (finest bit of whistling on vinyl since Roger Whittaker...)
