where is the jazz love in this community? (Some)Jazz is the shit!
I mean poeple on these boards get flack for beign indie snobs but fuck me I dont think they've tryed calling the police!
I wish I knew more about jazz but I don't, I suck.
, while you can spend a fuckload of money getting limited cdrs and cassettes off Volcanic Tongue or somewhere, as far as I know there's not the wallet-killing level of good releases that come out of dubstep at the moment.
I was a bit disapointed that The Field by Polweschel/John Tilbury didn't make the Wire list. That's very good stuff indeed.
Apart from the occasional Part Wild Horses... record, I still tend to go to older, more established acts for my jazz. As I say, Jon Hassell, David Slyvian, Polweschel, Supersilent and Evan Parker. Even the Rune Grammofon stuff while immense, tends
...tends to be made by people who've been about for a bit.
So basically, who's new and young and taking jazz somewhere different? Is anybody?
(I think the point I was also trying make is that older people like Parker and Tilbury make far weirder, more experimental jazz like the young'uns like Seb Rochford, The Portico Quartet etc. - although, don't get me wrong I do like Polar Bear + AL)
Zorn's got such a voluminous discography, I only just found out the other day he did tribute album called Sanitorium Under the Sign of an Hour-glass, to one of my favourite writers.
I don't generally do shortenings but I got so bored by the end of that speech, I couldn't bear to write Acoustic Ladyland; I'll do it in future though. I do like his stuff. I think the thing is I was in them around Last Chance Disco, and haven't really stuck with them He's such an economical drummer though; barely moves with Polar Bear, and yet does pretty amazing stuff. I think I typed a long, boring recollection of seeing them by accident in 2004 and being blown away in one thread somewhere.
I was reminded after I typed the bit above that The Neck's Silverwater was also a really great jazz album released this year (by, I think a fairly young band.)
is pretty immense.
i don't know very many artists, just the obvious ones like miles davis. could someone recommend me some please
and here's some more threads to read:
Most of these are in the last month or two. It gets discussed on here a bit.
