Cobalt - Gin
Krallice - Dimensional Bleedthrough
Wolves In The Throne Room - Black Cascade
Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II
are all absolutely worth your time. While they might not really be Black Metal even by the somewhat loose definition in the bands above, Gnaw and Tombs both released brilliant albums with definite BM influences . Drudkh also re-released Autumn Aurora this year, which is really good.
Altar Of Plagues' 'White Tomb' and Brown Jenkins' 'Death Obsession' too
they were good though so people should listen anyway
but Winterhours is a great album, and deserves more attention
Twilight (bm supergroup of sorts with Xasthur, Leviathan, Nachtmystium...check the as well)
Portal who are an amazing Aussie Blackened Death Metal band
And then the more obvious ones like Gorgorroth, Wolves in the Throneroom, etc etc
that's a good choice. As are Ulver, although by their own admission they long stopped being Black Metal really, though their early Black Metal stuff is very good. I should have mentioned Bone Awl in my list as well, awesome ultra lo-fi blackened punk, though as far as I know they only released an EP this year.
ulver are playing in london in february
any idea who'll support them? Might be Mothlite again, I would be quite happy to see them.
is very good, worth the 4 downloads on emusic
but that EP is great
Not all out this year and not all structly BM but I love Fauna, Cobalt, Brown Jenkins, Xasthur and have been revisiting Burzum a lot of late.....
listened to 'Rain' last night, all 60 odd minutes of it. Brilliant. Going to order their new one, 'The Hunt', soon, although I already have an mp3 of the demo somewhere
Drudkh and Wolves in the Throne Room are by far the best two.
Wodensthrone or Fen, two promising british BM bands that both released stunning debuts this year. If memory serves, Fen are on spotify - well worth a listen.
My favourites so far have been Blut aus Nord's 'Memoria Vetusta II' and 'Foulest Semen of a Sheltered Elite' by The Ruins of Beverast; two completely different, but both essential, BM albums.
Mayhem - Chimera
Thorns - S/T
Emperor - Prometheus
Emperor - Equilibrium
Satyricon - Volcano
Chimera and Volcano?
but i've been really enjoying Wolves In The Throne Room recently. Diadem of 12 Stars is on spotify, which is pretty awesome.
I thought I might as well re-post the new Alcest track: http://stereogum.com/282901/alcest-percees-de-lumiere/mp3s/
It's really good. Also, new Menace Ruine in May out on Aurora Borealis, which is great news
