his parents had this crazy notion that purple would over-stimulate him, so they removed all traces of purple from the house, and went to every length to keep him in the dark about the colour.
They had something known as 'the purple closet' in the house, which was (as you might imagine) a closet full of purple things, both to keep it all hidden and in case they needed to get a dose of purple themselves, whereupon they could go and spend a few minutes in there to make up for all they were missing in that part of the colour spectrum.
