IT'S DISSSSMAAAASSSS!!!! - favourite alt.xmas songs/covers?
Hi All,
Putting together a 50 'DiSmas' songs playlist on Spotify to run on the site but am sure there's stuff on there I've forgotten and ain't thinking of.
Also, what Xmas singles since the Darkness have actually been any good? Seems like popular music is missing exceptional personalities to write Christmas songs. Any thoughts on why? (am in the middle of writing why I think it is for my next Times column)
Anyway, here's the playlist at the moment of Christmassy songs and covers that I quite like http://open.spotify.com/user/seaninsound/playlist/2sFop4Z6a9oczYj8nGwSLL

No Low?
Surely 'Just Like Christmas' is the ultimate indie Christmas song.
yeah
only because it wasn't on Spotify.... non-Spotify suggestions welcomed. When I do an article on DiS next week and I can obviously mention and link to tracks/videos.
I think it is, I managed to find it but I can't get on Spotify at work
should be on the OC's 'Merry Chrismukkah' collection.
Yeah I remember finding it on this little gem of an album too.

Also, don't forget.

http://soundcloud.com/illfit/there-will-be-fireworks-in-excelsis-deo/
I am excited for the PSBs Christmas EP

Probably gone now though. :(
I like that Clipse track with the line...
'I'm shoveling so much snow man, call me frosty lover'
I think its called Ride Around Shinning on Hell Hath No Fury, the ice cold loops add to the Christams flavour too. I also like to throw on some Wiley Eski Beat classics like Ice Rink or Eskimo. There are some nice Sally Shapiro Christmas tracks too, oh and Informer by Snow...
Frightened Rabbit
It's Christmas So We'll Stop
The Fall
'No Xmas for John Quays' or 'Xmas with Simon'

Hanging From The Christmas Tree - FFS
This is not a jag because we're split so who cares if anyone likes it.....but Favours For Sailors did an xmas song last year - which mysteriously ended up being played by Markon Ronson in New York about 3 days after it was recorded? By my reckoning Jon came up with the funniest Christmas song lyrics ever;
www.myspace.com/favours4sailors - its on there still (if thats still there) check it out if you want to laugh at Xmas stalker/suicide.
An album with 2 Jimmy Eat World tracks on - Christmas Card & 12.23.95
"Alternative Rock Xmas" - www.amazon.com/dp/B000WAG2FA
Also has Luscious Jackson doing Let It Snow, and a Specials track, too, which is nice.
"Little Drummer Boy" - Dandy Warhols
and Julian Casablancas is releasing "I wish it was Christmas Today" in the next week or two isn't he?
finally, I have to admit that Snow Patrol did a pretty decent xmas song. Anyone ever buy that XFM charity xmas album? it was on there with Low, Eels and Flaming Lips' cover of 'White Christmas'.

JAGging around the Christmas tree
Just released - indiepop joy from the Bobby McGees, the School, the Loves, the Rocky Nest, Allo Darlin', Brontosaurus Chorus, Sweet Baboo, Little My, Silence At Sea, Them Squirrels, Speedmarket Avenue and Lucky Delucci. Each had a month to write a song about one of the 12 days of Christmas.
http://businessmanrecords.bigcartel.com/product/12-days-of-christmas
manics
There was the Manic Street Preachers song Ghost of Christmas, which was available as a free download two years ago. Completely ridiculous and a bit crap, apart from a great Noddy Holder-ish chorus.
Cap'n Jazz - Winter Wonderland
really?
must find this
ok
have added loads of this suggestions, thank you everyone, only a few more to go 'til I hit the magic 88 (which looks a bit like a Christmas decoration) and then I'll add this to the site proper
http://open.spotify.com/user/seaninsound/playlist/2sFop4Z6a9oczYj8nGwSLL

Hot Club de Paris - Will you Still Be In Love With Me Next Year
Nosferatu D2 - It's Christmas Time (For God's Sake)
Glasvegas - A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like a Kiss)

http://www.zshare.net/download/69797191ef43eb7a/
all done with a guitar and a loop pedal (and a bit of acoustic), slightly post rocky/lo-fi. apologies again for the jag.

'Top Ten Christmas Carols Even An Atheist Could Love'
http://www.alternet.org/belief/149151/10_best_christmas_songs_for_atheists?page=entire
The rules:
-Songs cannot have any mention of God, Jesus, angels, saints, or miracles.
-Songs must be reasonably well-known.
-No song parodies.
-Songs have to be good songs.
-Bonus points for not mentioning the word 'Christmas' or being written more than 100 years ago.
10: White Christmas - How can you not love an entirely secular Christmas classic written by a Jewish agnostic?
9: Jingle Bells - The second through fourth verses (you know, the ones nobody sings or has even heard of) are all about courting girls, racing horses, and getting into accidents, so that's entertaining.
8: Sleigh Ride - Lots of fun to sing, except for the weirdly tuneless bridge about Farmer Gray's birthday party....
7: Silver Bells - ...it's in 3/4 time, which means you can waltz to it.
6: We Wish You a Merry Christmas - ...it celebrates two great Christmas traditions: pestering the neighbors, and eating yourself sick.
5: Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! - ...it's not about mucking around in the actual snow, so much as it is about staying the hell out of it.
4: Santa Baby - ...a song that revels in ... the not-so-subtle implication of sexual favors ... the only magical being it recognizes is an increasingly secular gift-giving saint with an apparent weakness for sultry, husky- voiced cabaret singers.
3: Carol of the Bells - ...the original Ukrainian folk tune it's based on may even be prehistoric - and it sounds it.
2: Winter Wonderland - ...a melody and rhythm that makes you physically feel like you're taking a brisk, slightly slippery winter walk with the snow crunching under your boots.
1: Deck the Halls - It's old as the hills: the lyrics are well over 100 years old, and the tune dates back to at least the 16th century, if not earlier. ...doesn't mention God, or Jesus, or angels, or virgin births, or magical talking animals, or redemption of guilt through blood sacrifice, or any supernatural anything. If there are any gods at all who inspired this song, they are entirely pagan pre-Christian ones.
