I have Hounds of Love, I have Aerial, what else should I be getting of hers? I've heard The Dreaming is very good.
is a tie between The Kick Inside and The Dreaming. Kick Inside is her debut, so it has all the great stuff she'd been writing for years before. It's very piano led. The Dreaming is her fourth album I believe and arguably the first time she really takes control, being the first she produced on her own, and is the first where the piano is not so important......and its loopy as hell, but in a good way.
jesus i hate that song.
very stylistically diverse, and possibly the one that you kind of have to take with the biggest initial pinch of salt (the accents she does on The Dreaming and There Goes A Tenner are a bit bemusing at first), but once you've got under its skin it's an absolutely phenomonal record, would cheerily put it on a pedestal with Hounds of Love as her best.
Never For Ever is very good, album where she first began to properly mature as a songwriter, Babooshka's pretty dumb but shouldn't put you off, not least when counteracted by the likes of Breathing and Army Dreamers.
The Sensual World is a little AOR but basically pretty rock solid, and the title track and This Woman's Work are astonishing.
Kick Inside is indeed very good, though I think it's maybe a bit overrated just coz it's got those two big hits on it (the rerecorded Wuthering Heights from the Greatest Hits album is WAY better).
Lionheart is kind of a curio, though not awful; Red Shoes a bit floundery, sounds a bit like she was becoming an institution, not bad, but doesn't sound like the work of a genius, which Hounds of Love, The Dreaming and Aerial indubitably suggest she is.
I've always liked it quite a lot and think it's a real step up from the slightly hit-and-miss debut.
I'd go with Never for Ever or Sensual World. Or The Dreaming seeing as everyone praises it but sadly it's the one that's still lacking from my collection.
Am I missing something?
Kick inside next, which I think may even be better than Hounds of Love, then the dreaming, which is almost as good as those two. Sensual world is ok, but not up to the standard of the other three mentioned. Haven't heard much of the others.
