soapy [Edit] [Delete] 22 replies 01:37, 8 December '09

having being aware of them for years but never investing and having seen J & the Fog slay at ATP I feel like no would be a good time to get shopping

You're Living All Over Me is the place to start, right?

    • i'm pretty sure now

that they were my highlight of the weekend

every song he was making such incredible guitar noises and the last song was fabulous

  • living/bug/green are essential.

the rest of them are pretty much of a great standard though.

get the two witch albums if you're into stoner/doom.

i prefer feel so free to more light for the fog.

  • Where You Been

I started with the album above, as it contains Start Choppin'.

I still think it is my favourite J Mascis work.

Also recommend: Hand It Over, Farm, and J Mascis live acoustic at CBGBs to start with.

I own pretty much everything by J Mascis. All the albums are worth buying.

  • I'm not saying these are their best albums, but I listen to Without a Sound

and Hand it Over way more than the others.

It's probably because I first discovered them when I heard Feel the Pain on MTV during a cross channel ferry crossing between Portsmouth and Cherbourg in 1994.

    Alex-in-Ciderland | 8 Dec '09, 11:23 | X
    • Without A Sound is basically a J. Mascis solo album, is that right?

I'm sure I was told that.

      TheoGB @Alex-in-Ciderland | 8 Dec '09, 11:38 | X
      • Mike Johnson I think still played bass on that I think

but Mascis did drums, guitars, vocals, production and made the lunch.

    • Feel The Pain

Still one of the funniest music videos I've ever seen!

  • ylaom>where you been>green mind>bug>more light>hand it over>without a sound>dinosaur>free so free

dunno about the post reformation Jr records.

It was refreshing to see the fog, as much as I love mascis I do think anything post bug he should have just ditched the layers of murk, it worked well in their early days but the post barlow era not so much, thats why I like the fog whilst still pretty noisy he strips away at least a couple of layers of distortion, it was great to hear the unfairly maligned green mind classics at atp, his voice was really on form too hitting all the high notes rather than the out of tune drawl he sometimes does, and he played same day! (I worried his and the fog songs would never be played again after the reform)

    • i thought the Fog at ATP

were a lot better than when I saw Dinosaur Jr at Leeds

      soapy @ThingsThatFly | 8 Dec '09, 22:30 | X
      • As much as I prefer Dinosaur Jr's records,

the Fog at ATP were better than any of the times I've seen Dinosaur Jr.

        marckee @soapy | 8 Dec '09, 22:39 | X
        • my friends who'd seen Dino Jr in a proper venue, not a big field like I did

          said the same thing

          soapy @marckee | 8 Dec '09, 22:45 | X
    • Green Mind is perfectly fairly maligned

I'm sure I've had fights with dissers on this before but, to these ears, a few songs aside it is embarresingly bad (and I love Mascis and venerate him as a God).

      Puke and Cry, indeed.

      • No way

The wagon, blowing it, I live for that look, flying cloud, water, thumb, green mind all great crisp summery pop. A solid 9/10

        • And I know I'm alone on this one but how'd you pin that on me

Is one of my favourite mascis songs

          ThingsThatFly @ThingsThatFly | 8 Dec '09, 23:00 | X
  • J & Da Fog was probably my highlight of ATP

Especially when he ended with So what else is new. Thats on where you been which is a great album.

    Also Witch were amazing !!!

  • YLAOM

    best album ever

    thekidswhopoptoday | 9 Dec '09, 00:48 | X
  • First three albums are great; Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me and Bug

especially 'You're Living All Over Me'. 'Green Mind' and 'Hand It Over' are awful. 'Where You Been' and 'Without A Sound' are ok. 'Beyond' is great while 'Farm' has some great songs even if the production is terrible.

    Dessie | 11 Dec '09, 18:15 | X
    • did you get the replacement cd?

I know the first version was compressed to fuck. But then they did another lot of pressing where it was quieter and better. Agree with your analysis otherwise though.

      milkandkisses @Dessie | 11 Dec '09, 18:26 | X
    • you cant have listened to hand it over properly

It has some great songs mixed with his most unusual sounds. 'I don't think' sonicly interesting and has the great high pitch vocals, 'alone' is epic of misery, 'i'm insane ' has the amazing mental trumpets, 'getting rough' nice little banjo number and a sad goodbye to dinosaur jr, 'sure not over you' and 'I know yer insane' classic mascis, when 'gotta know' kicks in around the 'when I held you close' line is one of the best mascis moments

I don't like this myth of the first three albums being the only ones of worth, the extremely patchy 'dinosaur' album isn't anything compared to any of the post barlow era (even though without a sound is rubbish) and bug has a fair few filler tracks

      • I never said the first three albums are the only ones of worth.

I just think they are the bands best and I certainly don't credit Barlow with that. I just believe that during this period Mascis wrote his best songs. But I have to admit I like 'Without A Sound', 'Get Out Of This' is a beautiful song (one of my favourite). I don't get 'Hand It Over' though. I can see where your coming from with 'Dinosaur' (it is a bit patchy), but 'You're Living All Over Me' is one of the greatest albums ever in my opinion, right up there with The Stooges 'Funhouse'.

        Dessie @ThingsThatFly | 12 Dec '09, 21:07 | X
  • for me "bug" is the place to start

but all of the pre and post (and back again) barlow albums are worth getting. greenmind is awesome - i also enjoyed j mascis at atp more than any other time i have seen him. he was proper chirpy too.
