and damned excited.
nice timings as well
battles were terrible. utterly, shockingly poor. they can still play atlas of course but everything else was sloppy, ill conceived and pretentious. they've gon efrom being an incredibly tight band to being animal collective on a very bad day.
broadcast were awesome though.
Battles' new stuff was playful, dare I say it wacky (there's a nailed-on single that sounds like the Clangers playing northern soul). But pretentious and sloppy? They were tight as a gnat's b-hind. Business as usual. Although Atlas did tower over everything else embarassingly.
And Broadcast just were not awesome, and I say that having bought the ticket on the power of their appearance. They were beguiling at best, and bloody trying at worst. The stuff off the next album proper sounds promising. But Trish never sounded so ropey, the Witch Cults stuff is Wire-reader pesh, and most of the 'hits' that followed were skewiff. Easily the worst Broadcast set I've ever seen.
Now, can we at least agree on Nice Nice?
always good to get a gig that polarises opinion : )
perhaps the problem was that i didn't get what i expected from both bands. i don't have much broadcast stuff and the last time i saw them they were supporting belle and sebastian so it was a completely different set - still very enjoyable but infinitely more twee - and it was fun getting. as to battles, i wanted to move and, apart from the occasional fragment where songs came together, i found it frustratingly difficult to do so. the songs felt like they were flying apart rather than coming together.
i enjoyed nice nice. didn't change my world but i got a good dance out of it. they're a pretty new band apparently so it sounds like they've got plenty of good stuff to work with.
Broadcast were certainly that. Trish has gradually transformed into the video phantom in The Ring over the years. Now the music has caught up with her, I reckon.
I fucking loved Nice Nice. So much, in fact, that they deserve their own thread.
thoroughly enjoyed - loved broadcast, battles were better than expected and nice nice were a nice surprise (sorry)
the sound was pretty poor though
One of Battles' new songs sounded like something from Physical Graffiti...dirty, funky, hell yeah!
£4 for a can of Kronenberg, Nazi security, over-crowding, etc.
Quite enjoyed the music though.
Drink prices were pretty standard for big London clubs though ?
It's just one more thing to complain about though! The security were outrageous though, busting people in the toilets all the time. Maybe this is how all clubs work these days, my clubbing days are long gone!
I don't think it was overcrowded as such, I say they hit their capacity; but it was just so badly managed - the security were utterly hopeless
and all people have done (as expected) is complain about Battles (who were great, get over it). You all lead sad boring lives.
Flying Lotus: great
Nice nice: great
I also thought the sound was good, as was the venue. But the overcrowding was ridiculous.
I didn't get home until 10:30 :(
The smoking area was insaaaaaaaaaane! Though the dancefloor was a pretty good level of people-density I thought. Probably because EVERYONE IN THE WORLD was in the smoking area.
I did manage to get in bed at 6, good skill.
Broadcast.... No. I've only heard them on record and this was the first time I saw them. It was shit. Didn't translate well..
Nice nice were really good...like fuck buttons with talent and originality...
BAttles were immense... I liked the chaos!
Flying lotus stole the show for me! It was a blistering set with amazing improv bits... Shane tge dancefloor emptied a bit when he came on.... I gaurantee uf it was snares/aphextwin/kid606 doing the same thing last night the indie kids would have stayed to watch after battles.
I was too knAckered for plaid but I waited all night for them. When they said 'classics' set they really meant it...concentrating on early breKs stuff.
Rustie knew his shit... But I was about to drop so i had to go half wY through.
Overcrowding was just dangerous....blatantly breaking every health Nd safety rule in the book.
Ps. Thewarn...I stalked every dreaded guy who was with someone and shouted out "thewarn?" just so I canbe heard but not loud enough to look weird.
Also people kept on thinking I was security asking if I could go through a closed entrance to the smoking area. I gave them permission only for them to be manhNdled by the real security
lost track of time in the second room.
broadcast were worth it just for the bit where she stepped in front of the projector.
battles great, stayed just the right side of solo braxton wacky.
nice atmosphere for fly lo, loved it, crowd went crazy for loads of tunes, especially black sun. why was it called live? most of the tunes weren't his.
took a seat for plaid thinking it'd be chilled, but had to go for a dance.
rustie disappointing again, leaves the beat out for too long with noodly bits. frustrating given how talented he is.
great night, was busy, but think everyones going overboard with the overcrowded comments. seemed normal, did it even sell out?
I didn't see one.
There were a LOT of people with dreads there. Should have anticipated that really...
I forgot that was my mark...I was wearing my jacket on top..that's why everyone thought I was security.
I narrowed you down to two possibles: a skinny bloke with a striped top that looked very happy with himself; and a fat bloke flailing his arms to a beat drop that didn't exist during Flylo's set
Not guilty both times
i would love to have seen a Plaid classics set.
even thought it was them I was looking forward too.
Tehy played their mid nineties breaks era stuff.
Would have been nice to see their black dog and pre black dog era stuff live..but I doubt that will ever happen :(.
They were special though on sat though
I got a bad back and had to stay in, sulking.
Just keeping you all in the loop.
