Why is Autotune considered a 'fad'?

talskar [Edit] [Delete] 53 replies 01:10, 30 November '09

Rather than a genuine progression of genre? Sure its annoying when every song on TMF is autotuned up to the nines, but just like any music there's good and bad examples, right?

And then you've got Jay-Z writing a song bout ending it all and calling it gay or whatever. Why do I get the feeling that he's gonna end up looking stupid when this 'fad' lasts until 2019? Surely people thought the electric guitar was a fad? Or closer to home Mr. Z, the sampler?

Post your good/bad examples here please.

  • It wouldn't be a fad if it was used sparingly or tastefully but anything done to death, well dies. The electric guitar can make a million different sounds. If people find a way to use autotune creatively rather then just make the same R and B music over and over perhaps it won't be a fad.

  • autotune is as much of a musical progression

as the keytar. let it die. when T-Pain himself is tired of the shit it's a good sign it's over

  • what I object to

is Jay Z singing deliberately and horribly out of tune. Sure, it's nice and ironic and everything, but is this supposed to mean that without autotune, singing is supposed to sound horribly atonal? Because I remember people managing to carry a tune quite comfortably before autotune.

    • It's not really a musical progression,

rather it's a stylised production technique that's currently in vogue. In respect to it being a fad, I like to think of it like the Gated Reverb sound that was very popular in the 80s. People still use gated reverbs, just with a lot more subtlety than they did back in the day. It's not going to go away as such, but stylised heavy use will probably go out of fashion eventually. Then come back in fashion ready for the '00s Slick Commercial RnB revival.

        • This is an interesting point

anyone in particular you can think of who is guilty of this?

          talskar @brightonb | 30 Nov '09, 17:58 | X
          • I don't think Jay-Z despises autotune.

I remember saying he doesn't mind T-Pain, Lil Wayne, Or Kanye. I think his problem was with people using it for no reason, as opposed to making use out of it.

Then again, rap as a whole was supposedly a fad.

            • did anyone hear the story of Kanye calling someone an asshole through a mic that turned out to be on autotune? I'd love to hear what that sounded like.

          • it has gone beyond that though, people are using it as more of a stylistic choice than a production tool now.

            talskar @brightonb | 30 Nov '09, 17:52 | X
            • I'm not really getting where you're coming from here

sure, maybe the music its predominant in isnt directed towards you but that doesnt make it any less valid.

I agree the electric guitar isnt the best analogy, but its the only thing in music that i can recall provoking such a hostile reaction in purists.

The Roland 808 and Gated Digital reverb are good examples of this that other people have mentioned, I think the fashion for wah pedals in the 50s/60s are another one.

            • Its to far gone to be a fad its more of a trend now

there is some good stuff with autotune and i think we will see some insane people get hold of it soon enough and start messing with it in new ways.

My fave is: Chopped & Screwed by T-Pain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAuwi-B33VQ

I think its just become THE thing becuase its pretty cheap and easy to do, a lot cheaper than the last cool thing... Timberland/Neptunes/Kanye. If you want to hear it really getting abused check out grime artists attempts at pop incredible http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZrPEPeZa08

                • there was an ep bon iver did that had some auto tune on it

I can't remember if it was any good though, but Starkey did a remix and that sounded nice.

I really like Vocoder and talky box type stuff though it sounds loads cooler than auto tune when its done right.

being used to great effect. It's just that it has a lot of really bad music to answer for.

A particular favorite is Zola Jesus' vocals on the Rory Kane track LA SUXXX
