Something full of nastiness and sneering abandon.
NO silly emo nonsense
NO daft humourless technical fringe-rock
Maybe some early Black Flag stuff - First Four Years compilation and also My War (which was a massive influence on Pissed Jeans I reckon)
And here's an AmRep spotify playlist that thewarn made, which is fucking rad. You could do a lot worse than getting their "Dope, Guns and Fucking In The Streets" compilations
you metion them quite often. listened to them yesterday - sounded cool!
if you're looking for really dirty music - look no further.
or if you're into dirty rock'n roll: new bomb turks. or the dirtys - probably the wildest punk band on the planet: http://www.last.fm/music/The+Dirtys
a comilation I have from Glitterhouse records has great stuff on it...
Chasing Darla by The Cows is ace, as is Dance by Surgery
I need the Karp doc.
Kong have shades of that sound to their album, but are more restrained and Shellac-like I guess.
Helmet (first album - strap it on)
I think "Betty" is a great album, especially.
I need to own some Unsane records.
(though still very good - and it has Unsung on it) and I like Born annoying (early stuff compilation where they sound not unlike the Fall in places).
Everything relased since Betty has been an unmitigated disaster.
Quicksand might be a thought as well but they might be heading to close to emo.
Betty is my favourite Helmet album!
wasn't half bad, dunno what has happened to Page's voice though, he really seems to have to tear it out, he sounds more like Rollins now. Aftertaste was lame.
ferdie/countzero described them as exactly like that to me but better.
and perhaps some Foetus, try The Need Machine, if you like it, delve into it more
and I'll add Clockcleaner.
the Dethscalator side of the new 'Hey Colossus Vs Dethscalator' LP on Riot Season. Right up that street.
Francis Harold & The Holograms
these two released some of the best stuff this/last year
it's horrible. But in a great way.
released this year is totally brilliant, there'll be a download somewhere on google probably
as are Drunkdriver.
Clockcleaner (basically sound like the Jesus Lizard, and in a better way than Pissed Jeans)
Chickenhawk, Bo Ningen and Pelican can fuck off that list RIGHT NOW
And who the fuck are Marvin?
Six Finger Satellite
Gland Of Hope And Glory is one of the filthiest albums I own.
Halo of Flies
would def back Clockcleaner, Unsane, Mayyors and Dirtbombs too.
EXACTLY the same as TAD so......TAD - God's Balls.
You prolly know their song "The Money Will Roll Right In". Nerrrrrvarrnerrr covered it. And Mudhoney still play it at most live sets.
Great cover that.
you're not the only oldie here y'know
Missed that. I don't belong in this thread anyway: I don't actually like Pissed Jeans, and I'm not sure why. They tick all the boxes but they just leave me cold. Oh well.
and it'll click, bigtime. It did for me.
Angry Samoans - Back From Samoa is one of the snottiest punk albums i've ever heard. the Shitty Limits lift a lot of ideas from these guys.
Drunks With Guns
Is that like Crustcore? Amebix are a must in that genre :D
but if you want to check out live bands that still exist AND ARE TOURING:
TODAYS IS THE DAY
GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP
They better come over here: they're in Geneva a week before me, annoyingly.
are finished i think
they looked like utter cunts though (the cuntishness that doesn't add to the music)
There's a long story behind it, which involved the cancellation of one of our shows at the last minute, but yup, they're done.
you were responsible for the cancellation that was never announced!?
- in as many places as we could manage with a couple of days notice at least. It was before we'd set up the full mailing list/facebook group and stuff.
I was going to suggest Pipecleaner, but obviously you beat me to it.
Does DeadJames post here any more?
Girls Against Boys
Cop Shoot Cop
I feel all flushed at the thought....they had a big impact on teenage me.
GvsB are fucking amazing, but they were all taut and sleazily sexy. And Chavez and Unwound were a bit too heart on sleeve to be flithy.
Massive yes to Karp and Naked Raygun though.
and have the same fans.
Eyehate God are fucking filthy but I can never imagine them playing on the same bill or having the same die hard fanbase
is the only one I can think of that hasn't been mentioned yet
Snotty as hell. They play R&B style garage that's a bit punky. It's so good! You gotta hear this song:
Wires On Fire
for wires on fire although I've always thought manatees had more to do with post-metal than noise rock/punk but maybe thats just me splitting hairs.
I'd recommend Racebannon who play some of the most gloriously unhinged noise rock I've ever heard 'Acid or Blood' seemed to have gone under the radar in a lot of cases but it really is brilliant
and Divorce who sound like a female-fronted take on the Jesus Lizard with added no-wave,
Cougars...I've been looking for stuff by them but I only found teh japanese band and I gave up
I love them. Can't believe they've got rid of their horn section now. sadface.
early swans stuff
steel pole bath tub
pussy galore / royal trux
perhaps the hospitals / coachwhips etc (sort of)
uzeda / bellini (bit more shellac-y)
Play a really amazing brand of Jade Tree endorsed straight up garage punk. Really amazing new record 'Lost Art' is blow your socks off.
there's two ways you can approach this thread:
find a band that 'sounds' like them and follow the more obvious aspects of their aesthetic
cite bands that were Jesus Lizard's peers, played shows with them and appealed to the same fans.
Unwound was an example of the latter
this makes me very happy indeed. Bravo music forum! Some great stuff I'd never heard being mentioned
Not complaining though!
don't piss on my parade
it is BLACK ELK!
Asked personally by JL to tour with them....They've been handed the torch!
I haven't been this excited about a band for over 10 years.
Young Widows and Young Widows.
or some youtube / myspace links, innit?
lbc links to at the top of the thread. It's just Amrep bands, but there's plenty of stuff you might not have heard in there that you might like
Is this Jagging?
Sticking it on now
Cos if Rman are allowed then I don't see why not Shellac.
Shellac aren't filthy, snotty or disgusting, nor do they sound like Pissed Jeans or Jesus Lizard.
most of the bands mentioned in this thread aren't filthy snotting disgusting or like TJL or Pissed Jeans. There are loads of awesome bands in the thread but about three actually fit the criteria. Radars r totally broken
It's like once there's a thread that says "Recommend me a band that a bit heavy-ish", everyone has an outpouring of heavy, awesome, non-weak bands. Not complainin' or nuffin. But it would've been too tiring to go around every not-so filthy, snotty or disgusting and say "Yo, that band ain't so filthy, snotty or disgusting". Pedantry takes it outta ya.
We're talking about Shellac right? The people who wrote 'Dog and Pony Show'? If you find them non-filthy then I don't want your radar! Also surely there's overlap between early Shellac's sound and Jesus's Lizard sound? You don't hear that?
Anyone back me up?
with the machine stylee rhythm sections and the guitar. Shellac are a bit more clinical though if that makes sense.
But liek, The Dirtbombs? I know they have 'dirt' in their name but that's about as far as it goes w/comparing them to Pissed Jeans. But no mo pointless moaning from me!
Whereas I think of Pissed Jeans and The Jesus Lizard sounding more, kind of, well, dirty and sludge and shit. Yeah.
if I was going to be a massive anus I would say TJL are fairly clinical sounding too. The guitar playing isn't massively far away from clean basically all of the time. There isn't really any 'sludge' apart from in the voice of Yow maybe.
I feel like it was a bit uncalled for the laying-into I got for originally nominating Shellac. If you're into TJL type sound you should really dig Shellac.
I didn't mean "sludge" in the typical way it's use, as in "sludge...core" or whatever. I meant, that listening to The Jesus Liza, or Pissed Jeans, can sometimes feel like wading your way through tonnes of sludge or having it all piled upon your head or something. Listening to both bands can feel like being trapped in the song 'The Basement' by Pain Teens - you're more a victim and the music is inflicted upon you in a grotty basement where you're being held against your will. But with Shellac there's more space in the music, you could even do a twirl if you fancied, and it feels more like you're in on the whole thing with them. Though, with Pissed Jeans it feel like your in on the "joke" as well...
mug_mug_ANUS, you said "clinical" first!!!!!!!!
and I am now drying my eyes, untrembling my lip and deleting my accusation of 'Noisy Dirty Music Based Cyberbullying'.
but i'm still going to have to fight you because of that mug_mug_ANUS comment
Yes I know I said anus first shut up
Dirtbombs definately don't belong in this thread.
Now all the good bands have been taken. Bubble burst.
the album "Heroin Man" is available on compact disque via southern.net and features some guy lying face down dead in the bath on the cover.
Also Pissed Jeans are about as scary/creepy as a basket of kittens.
Rasberry Bulbs/Bone Awl
Haymarket Riot / Sweep the Leg Johnny
Ligament (now known as Part Chimp)
Arab On Radar / Chinese Stars
The Icarus Line (the first album!)
The Flying Luttenbachers
Cop Shoot Cop
A few of the bands there from the Three1G stable, great label.
'Heroin Man' is brilliant btw.
and again eye hate god!
i hate my life and i hate myself right now, give me some more disgustingly bitter, angry, hateful music please.
there is only so many times i can listen to Pissed Jeans, Flipper, the Jesus Lizard and Clockcleaner.
works very well.
top band, too
try the albums "Havilah" or "Wait Long Enough by the River and the Bodies of your Enemies will Float by."
thats some pretty bleak shit
try remix album "Love and Hate in Dub" for something a bit different.
