The Horrors
Calling The Very Best ...
world music is like calling MIA world music. It's a cross-continent collaboration.
In any case this list seems pretty 'safe' to me. I'm more likely to empathise with Sister Ray's end of year list.
I wouldn't be so sure
Sister Ray had MGMT at No. 1 last year
Really?
Maybe im holding fond memories of the Selectadisc lists which were always pretty spot on.
thanks
I use to work in Selectadisc in the early noughties (smokes pipe and reclines by the fire)
Here's my decade list

oneida?
health?
noooooooooooooooooooooooo

Would like to see Bill Callahan and Richard Hawley swap positions
I want to check out the Leisure Society one, shame I STILL have no laptop/iPod :-( :-(
Would be great
if there was a Spotify playlist of this.

Missing about 7 or 8 albums that aren't on there.

Amazing, thanks!
Fever Ray in the top 10?
Really, who are they trying to shit? It was the worst album I heard this year.
List - dismissed. Bye bye rough trade kudos.
you don't know anything
Fuck off
Fever Ray is brilliant. That Bill Callahan Record is called Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle, btw. Decent list. A lot better than some we will see I'm sure.
I'd forgotten that a 'best of' list which didn't cover the whole decade was even an option
24/60
Reasonable list. I would have Japandroids a lot higher than that - and can't see how The Horrors can be in anyone's top ten. Are they on Rough Trade?
0/60
Outstanding!
snap!
chusks!
I own about 5
You'd probably quite like the Mos Def album. And the Japandroids one actually. Soulsavers album in there is a real surprise. It's good, but I don't think it's end of year good.
Also: "Wut?! No Pissed Jeans?!"
I've heard mos def and japandroids,
but don't own them.
I've heard 3, but own 0
i think THe View's album
should be in top 50 of this year, truly amazing album
i know most people will disagree with me, but it was an album i enjoyed during all year, and still cant stop listening
14
some strong picks though.
It's a bit more... dull...? than usual lists
From what I recall anyway. Or maybe I've just heard more of these this year?
There is some good stuff in it, but I'm disappointed by the lack of rock in there considering we've had very good records released by Part Chimp, Kong, Pissed Jeans, Obits, FOTL, Joe Gideon & The Shark, SunOOOOOO)))(?), Hunches, etc.
Seems to overlook a whole heap of great Scottish albums too...
Still, that's the thing about lists. Pointless and subjective. Just a bit more one dimensional on first glance than their usual ones it feels...?
Also, I don't think any of the top 5
Are truly great records. Well, The Low Anthem might be - I've not heard that one.
But the others are all 7/10 records that'll probably get quite dusty in my CD collection in the years to come.
8/50
Veckatimawhoodle should be #1, so there.
The Acorn = 2008, surely?
..amd where are The Antlers?
Not on the list it seems..
I thought it came out in 2007!
yep
deffo 2008 (maybe 2007 in US/canada)
17/60
Rough Trade usually have a more surprising #1, this seems a bit of a safe choice. Good to see Ganglians in this list.
I know lists are subjective,
and everyone always moans that band x, y or z aren't in (well, The XX are)... BUT...
No Future Of The Left? Moderat? Flaming Lips?? Hmmmmmmm.
yes
ymmit, moderat, i had forgotten about that, that should be in any top 50 this year, its awesome!
i think i might only have 2 or 3 of these
and those are amongst the most disappointing albums i've got this year (jarvis, animal collective, grizzly bear)
yes the jarvis cocker album was truly shit
I liked it
so up your bum
something about you and bums
Any 2009 list without Pissed Jeans in it.
Is dead to me.
Have you done a list yet Mike?
Without wanting to sound all gushy and 'YOU'RE MY HERO!', I just find it weird that I genuinely have never bought a record which you've rated and then not loved it.
And I'm just wondering if I've overlooked any gems?
There will be a selection of genre-centric lists on the BBC...
...either late December or early Jan.
Personally, I can't see (hear) beyond the likes of Wild Beasts, Fuck Buttons, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and the aforementioned Pissed Jeans so far as standout favourites go. I'd also be tempted to slip A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Memory Tapes, Sonic Youth and Clark into a top ten.
Oooh, interesting.
I'll have to check out Clark and memory Tapes, not heard those.
Still haven't tried Grizzly Bear on for size either...
I love all those others. Other than AC, which I merely like.
'future daniel'
by clark is the year's least heard banger, maybe.
over to you, youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vazBxk_avxc
a little disappointed
Times New Viking aren't making more end of year lists. it's a great album.
meh
was under the impression that rough trade would do a decent list, but the majority of those are 7/10 albums, and have no bizness being there.
why do i always look at these :( THEY ARE NEVER AGREEABLE
No Jim O'Rourke or Snic Youth
Couple of glaring omissions for me...would have expected a better list than this from Rought Trade.
Sean will be gutted
No Paramore! Outrageous!
No Sunn o)))
I agree, one of, if not my favourite of the year.
10/60
and the best ten too :)
Nice
Good to see Riceboy Sleeps getting some kudos. Thought I was the only one.
no total absence of Dananana..
..renders this list instantly irrelevant. The Leisure Society at no7?! Pipe 'n' slippers time, Nige!
there was no mention
of worriedaboutsatan, so this list is RUBBISH! ;)
hehe, seriously though, i don't really own any of that list, but seconded on Moderat- one of the best electronic albums of the past few years, for sure, so it's odd it wasn't there. and Ben Frost should be there too.
Why top 60?
14/60
If we're having a comp. Had 10 of first 20 and then they got all obscure on my ass...Have tried hard to love Low Anthem but it constantly underwhelms. I'm still holding out for Blakroc. Think it will smash its way into Year lists. IMHO
1/60
Tough Crowd
you lot are !
anyhoo individual staff top tens will be published on saturday. Acorn was my mistake ! The whole point of it is that these are our fave releases of the year, the list is there to spark debate which it seems to be doing! If we all agreed the world of music would be a very boring place indeed.
I dunno why they didn't put The Strange Boys' debut on the list,
considering they pretty muched signed the group on the back of it being so awesome; plus it would have been an excellent way of shamelessly promoting them for their sophomore release early next year.
Anyway, nice to see White Denim's Fits with a reasonably high placing, can't see many other publications including it unfortunately.
I don't think I can trust a list from a shop
I feel the same when Boomkat do lists or reviews.
The xx & Grizzly Bear are alright but kind of boring, I like them but not loads. Same with Dirty Projectors really.
I really like Atlas Sound and Martyn on that list.
Can I just say
I absolutely love this list. Not everything in it, mind, but its got Atlas Sound and The Very Best in the top 20, and there won't be many other top twenties with both of those in, if any.
I only have 6 of these...
err...
Camera Obscura
Fanfarlo
Japandroids
The Horrors
Memory Tapes
Wild Beasts
The bottom four would probably make my personal tops lists. Fanfarlo's was solid but I'm having trouble remembering it now, and Camera Obscura's was a disappointment.
12/60
aside from the aforementioned omission of some brilliant rock albums (Kong in particular)it's not really a bad list apart from being more than a little obvious maybe.
Glad someone else thinks
YYY's have dired on us. I think its been a year of loads of solid records with very few amazing ones. Possibly because there a lot more debuts that have hinted at brilliance but not quite delivered on this album.
How come
nobody seems that bothered about the HEALTH album any more, after the super-excitement that came around its release? That was this year, right?
:(
It's because it's not that great
(He says having purchased it at the weekend and listened to it thrice over)
Well
I think it's great :) but then I've seen them live a couple of times this year, and the awesomeness of that may have coloured my viewpoint? Who knows. I can't be bothered getting het up over lists and crap anyway.
I can't get into it
...even after all the hype beasts did their work
I've listened to 19 of these
I like The XX a lot but it's not #1 quality. Really nice to see Forest Fire in there - I love that album. Cannot understand the hype around Dirty Projectors or Health.
And I keep meaning to get round to The Horrors, but... urgh. Fuck them.
load of crap
2/60
I find The XX's appeal utterly bewildering.
16/60
Girls are a little low for me, though.
Vivian Girls
correctamundo - would be in my top 10.
I like the look of this list because its got that variety that is like well good (not sure i'll ever be a music writing dude).
11/60
Top 10 are pretty mediocre (except Fuck Buttons). And Acorn was 2007!
I don't have a single one of those.
I've heard a few though and I think Neko Case, Shitmat, Justin Townes Earle and Katatonia should probably be on there because I like them. Been more of a year for singles, rather than albums methinks.
That's generally a list I can get on board with
I've tried repeatedly to get into the xx album, but - Crystalised aside - it doesn't do anything for me at all.
It's all subjective... Personally.... from my point of view...
The Horrors - HAH! Embarressing. I severly doubt anyone will be listening to this next year, never mind in 10 years time.
'Sometimes I wish We Were an Eagle' should not be at 60, it should be at least 59 places higher... I'm not always a massive Smog fanboy, the last solo effort I didn't rate at all, but this year's 'Eagle' was immmense.
I own...
the xx – xx
the horrors – primary colours
yeah yeah yeahs - it's blitz!
phoenix - wolfgang amadeus phoenix
girls - album
alela diane - to be still
andrew bird - noble beast
big pink - a brief history of love
decemberists - the hazards of love
patrick watson - wooden arms
... and several more are on my wish list, which isn't as out of touch as I anticipated.
