often overlooked, but i think it's an awesome album
If so yes I agree it's brilliant.
More than Sonic Nurse and everything as far back as the one before 'A thousand leaves'. I reckon anyhow.
I own about 9 Sonic Youth albums. I reckon that I've only listened to 3 of them more than 5 times though...
but then again, I guess I prefer there more straight-forward and melodic side so it's full of gems for me!
was like the 2nd one I brought oddly, abit of a weird way to start with them, it's pretty decent and I like it alot but trouble with sonic youth is they have too many really great records so stuff like rather ripped can easily be overlooked.
certainly better than the new one, and it was awesome live during the encores on the daydream nation tour, but...
i really wish they'd carried on heading down that Murray Street path. i miss the jams and noise and songs over 4 minutes.
And I liked Rather Ripped but it just doesn't have the extra noise and fun that The Eternal does.
although it doesn't really have the slow-burning longevity of some of their other albums.
It's a very decent album but to suggest it's better than Sonic Nurse or A Thousand Leaves is the most ludicrous things I've EVER heard. For the record, I think The Eternal is pretty poor by SYs standards.
I really like it, and it has some great songs on it, but it doesn't have that eerie glow that gives some of their albums an amazing longevity - I'm thinking Murray Street, Sonic Nurse, Daydream Nation, Evol, Sister.
I expected to love The Eternal as some of the songs sounded brilliant when they played them at Scala in April but I was a bit not-bothered. I found that pretty strange as they're one of my very favourite bands, and that's the first time I've felt no urge to revisit a SY album.
Well looking forward to seeing them again at ATP in a couple of weeks though...
but I'd agree that Rather Ripped is a better album than Sonic Nurse. There's nothing on that record that even comes close to 'Do you believe in rapture?' or 'Incinerate'. It's on a par with A Thousand Leaves and Murray Street for me.
I would definitely say that 'Pattern Recognition', 'The Dripping Dream' and 'I Love You Golden Blue' easily eclipse both without breaking a sweat...
I wanted to like Sonic Nurse. But instead of it being endearingly messy, I just found it sloppy. Just a matter of taste, I suppose.
Rather ripped has become my fave since its release. Its the one I usually reach for first when iam in the mood for some SY, then I work my way back through dirty, goo and daydream nation...
especially after the brilliant 'Sonic Nurse'. No song on Rather Ripped compares with 'pattern recognition' or 'paper cup exit'............or any song on 'Sonic Nurse'.
its melodicly beautiful at times, I like it especially when I fill like listening to more straight forward music.
