Arab Strap
I regard it as the most difficult Arab Strap album
but it's good.
I was never sure why it was so derided at the time truth be told
Maybe it was the sheer bleakness of it on first listen or the expectations of ebing on a more 'major' label.
But it's great. And for the haters who said at the time they never did upbeat songs, I present 'Tanned' and 'Hello Daylight'. Both of those are stunning.
Plus the sentiments and themes dealt with in 'Pro (your) life' were very brave.
It's not their best hour I don't think, that goes to Mad for sadness, Philophobia or Monday..., plus I personally marginally prefer the Red Thread, but it's way better than people give it credit for.
But then, I think they're the best band ever so may be slightly biased...
How odd...
I LOVE Elephant Shoe. I think it's amazing.
But I cannot stand Red Thread. I listened to it about 5 times over a couple of days after I bought it and couldn't remember a single second of a single track after it'd finished.
I'm the same
The Red Thread is probably the only Strap album I can't get into. Elephant shoe however, while not being my favourite, is probably the one I listen to the most. It just works so well at night, particularly on trains and buses...
strange
'Red Thread' is probably my favourite Arab Strap album after 'Philophobia'. It has some great songs on there. I sort of lost interest in them after that, as I couldn't get into 'Hug & Pint' or 'the Last Romance'. I found Aidan started 'singing' too much, and didn't really click with it.
I always really liked 'Elephant Shoe' and definitely think it didn't deserve the kicking it got. 'Cherubs' and 'One Four Seven One' are just superb.
It took me a while to get used to his 'singing'
But when I did, I loved them all over again. 'MATH&Pint' is a very, very good record indeed.
i like them all
they are all great. Mad for Sadness is probably the best though.
I loved Cherubs, and Direction of Strong Man, but it doesn't hold together as a narrative like Philophobia does, although that's probably due to the 'Novel' lyric sheet.
Aidan & Malcolm have just been back in the studio together
to record some stuff for some ARab Strap boxset thingy that's comigng out soon. SO EXCITED!
^ so excited I lost all ability to type
TELL ME MORE SCOUT
NOW! (Please) x
BTW, I saw your post about not posting in threads over on this 'ere board barring ones about the Strap and the National.
And I like these two bands a whole lot, to unhealthy levels, so should you want to turn this thread into a disgustingly geeky dissection of the most obscure Arab Strap rarities and B-sides, then far be it from me to stop you.
Well...
I'm not completely sure as I was very very drunk when I cornered Mr Middleton about this so I remember few details.
All I know is that it'll be on Chemikal Underground and released next year. It's a boxset but that's all I know.
He's also hoping to do an album with Mira Calix next year which will be AWESOME. Did you hear the live session on Late Junction a few months ago? Brilliant!
Haha, yes I'm true to my word about my music postings!
Awesome
I'll likely have most of it anyhow, but I'd still 'like' it...
Nope not heard that, where could I track that down then? Is it on his site?
You can't :-(
It was on the lkate junction iplayer thingy but only for a few weeks and I'm almost postitive it's since gone. It really should go up on his site, it was so awesome, really haunting.
It might still be on the bbc i player but not sure.
Hope you find it it was fantastic. They did speak about doing an album when they were interviewed on the show. I almost shot my load about that at the time...
