My first impression: it's not very good, is it?
I can't tell if I don't think it's very good, or if I just don't think it's very good compared to Alopecia and Elephant Eyelash (both of which I think are amazing). It has grown on me a bit, but... not all that much? :(
which managed to win my devout attention in the first week of both records' release. But I've just not been able to get into it. The last two tracks, forgotten the names, are cool but the whole thing just sounds like demos that were left on the cutting floor for a previous record. I'll give it a few more goes but I don't think it's something I'll return to all that often.
..and they decided that a lot of the songs were so different that it would be better to release them as two separate albums.
Also you made me realise that I've not actually listened to Fuck Buttons properly yet - what a douche I am :(
it does have some really good songs on it - and I think the last two are the best two - but it's definitely no Alopecia or Elephant Eyelash, not quite the same inventiveness to the music or bite to the lyrics. It's a 7/10 album though and given that Yoni Wolf recorded it during the same sessions as Alopecia I'd call it a sidestep rather than a misstep.
It probably took me about three months to properly appreciate it. Basically what OceanStorm said.
I cringe though whenever I hear the first song, 'These Hands'; fortunately it's short.
