BBC Sound Of 2010
Isn't it about this time of year that the contenders for next year's Tips For... pieces start releasing their limited edition 7"s?
I can forsee Ellie Goulding's name being bandied around a lot - Polydor signed, cool production name (Starsmith), about to release a debut single.

Frightened Rabbit
The Shins
Esben And The Witch
I'd bet my house on...
somewhat belated, yes, but...
could see girls sneaking in there.
I'm thinking
Hook and the Twin may do the business in 2010
I think...
Detroit Social Club
Magistrates
Delphic
Two Door Cinema Club
Everything Everything
Dinosaur Pile-Up
Pulled Apart By Horses
Frightened Rabbit
Radio 1 will be all over the new single, surely?
You haven't listened to Radio 1 for some time, have you?
Not even Zane Lowe will play it.
interestingly
they were on the culture show this week :)
http://bbc.co.uk/i/npk0d/
Would particularly like to see Pulled Apart By Horses get some nice attention from someone
Not fully convinced by Magistrates (bored me live) or Dinosaur Pile-Up yet
Pulled Apart By Horses is a good shout.
I think Magistrates were hyped more last year though, I rememebr Zane Lowe hyping them a lot then. Fever Ray? No?
Pulled Apart By Horses for sure I reckon
Delphic have been getting good press for a while now as far as I am aware
Mount Kimbie anyone? they are bloody excellent as well we all know, has anyone heard any Zola Jesus also, heard some the other day, intriguing but not sure yet. thoughts?
Who is gonna be the big industry type one this year (aka adele type thing?)
I don't think mount kimbie will get noticed
its more likley to be Joy Orbison if anyone from that kind of area gets a look he's got the hype behind him even the NME and Zane Low picked up on him. Kimbie and JO are on the same label though so either way Hotflush win! Its cool he gets a lot of press and hype but he's only had that one 12" out at least give him room to bubble under for a while get his label going and some more releases. Joker could be a very outside bet, he's still well young, released loads but not done an album yet, doing epic amounts of pop remixes, has his own label, tours the world, ride a bike, likes purple... his music might be a bit mad for this sort of list though.
Also this ellie goulding girl...
I have just listened to two songs and why does the producer think it is a good idea to keep doing that odd cut a second of the vocal and make it repeat in a wierd duh duh duhduhduhd way?
also what is this called in actual music terms not idiot speak (see above)
Tubelord?
Dananananakroyd?
Grammatics?
i think they're all far too good to be lumped in with the usual tripe
that gets labelled bbc sound of 2009. and as they've got albums out already i think it's unlikely.
i saw ellie goulding supporting casiokids and thought she was a bit naff. but then she is like a progression from little boots/la roux etc. so probably will make the list.
Their time is over already.
tubelord
are so 2008
Who gives a shit?!
Watch for
Music Go Music
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour
Sound Of Guns
not you, obviously
but, other people
why would anyone give a shit?!
Ellei Goulding
Marina and the Diamonds
THE DRUMS THE DRUMS THE DRUMS, definitely
Everything Everything
Lost Knives is a long shout
Also...
The Rosie Taylor Project.
Set to release their debut album proper (i.e. a coherent body of work rather than a loose compilation of early songs) towards the end of this year. Jambo and I are big fans.
The Drums seem to be getting an insane amount of hype ATM.
Bands
For me its the year of the bands again.
My top tip would be Sound of Guns
followed by maybe little commets or detroit social club
The Drums
Ellie Goulding
Local Natives
Everything Everything
Chew Lips
Delphic
Marina and The Diamonds
Everything Everything
Holly Miranda
Free Energy
John and Edward
+ Drake and Mini Viva
i quite like Chew Lips
but can't see them being a 'tipped' kinda band.
wasn't marina on all the tip lists last year?
Everything Everything
Lights On
This Town Needs Guns
Chew Lips
My tips
Elizabeth and the Page Turners
Holy Moly
Loan Sharks
Ian McShame
Right Right
The Ian
Patrick Swayayayay-zee
I.A.N.4
Enya
"The new Panda Bear"
i not telling anyone
so i can buy like half of the limited edition 7" and sell them for 30 quid each a month later
i hope its not another electro girl list.
i hope its proper music again.
Larry Grayson
Bill Murrarrarrarrarry
The Fuckwits
La Who ?
Liam Gallager
Isn't this more a genre than a set of new bands?
I'd guess
Broken Spindles (James Mercer/Danger Mouse on Colombia)
Free Energy (produced by James Murphy on DFA, ex-Hockey Night... my tip to 'do a Temper Trap/Hold Steady/Maccabees/Editors' next year, not massive but will seemingly shoot up out of nowhere around festival season)
Villagers (Domino)
Love & Other Demons (Unsigned)
Gold Panda (imprint of Wichita)
Joy Orbison (Unsigned?)
Freelance Whales (lotsa the right people are fans http://www.myspace.com/thefreelancewhales - similar kinda post-CMJ blog-related buzz about them as Passion Pit this time last year )
Also expect to see
Ellie Goulding (she's unremarkable)
The Drums (fucking terrible, they make me violently hate everything about indie music and I rather like the indie music)
Edward Sharpe (new Rough Trade signing - riding high on http://hypem.com/#/popular)
Lizzy Trulie
Madame Ray (Kate from Long Blondes new band, working with Bernard Butler)
Personally, I think next year will be all about 2nd/3rd album acts but am not sure the media is ready to change from picking utterly unknown acts to realising that a tipped act should be someone of a decent quality, rather than someone who happened to be PR'd at the right time and are essentially a "hot band in nov - jan" who essentially might be lucky enough to get into the self-fulfilling prophecy trap. Really hope under-championed acts we all already love like Frightened Rabbit, The National, Midlake, etc fill the void left by the fact not many bands have been signed in past 12 months and fewer of them are particularly exceptional or have any genuine crossover potential.
And yeah, we'll be doing a full 2010 new bands week at some point in the not so distant future.
p.s.
i'm still waiting to hear an undeniably brilliant new band but there's seemingly no Franz/Darkness/Gaga-like juggernaut waiting in the wings. plenty of new music covered on DiS throughout the year compiled here tho obvs http://drownedinsound.com/lists/discover
Joy Orbison (Unsigned?)
He's with Hotflush and has his own label Doldrums now as well, plus tracks popping up on Aus Music and other places no doubt. A lot of dubstep related people are signed to loads of labels and have their own.
oh right
i heard some bigger labels were sniffing around and wasn't sure if those labels just released one-off singles, etc. thanks for clarifying. i coulda/shoulda just asked sam strang who used to work for dis and is now managing him.
I was wondering what sam was up too
not seen him around these parts for a while.
I think its a loose kind of track by track thing with most of the people in the scene. They often release lots of 12"s with certain labels and some are just one offs.
He's only released one 12" at the moment the other ones have been anounced though, god knows what else is in the pipe line for him.
mmmm
Two Door Cinema Club
Gaggle
Pulled Apart By Horses
Marina and the Diamonds
Ellie Goulding
Copy Haho?
Esben and the Witch etc etc
The Drums
Esben & The Witch
Haunted Stereo
Band Of Skulls
Southampton!
I would also really like to see
Esben and the Witch beion the list, although maybe they'd be more likely to be lower down - they are awesome and seem to be getting some pretty good press all over the shop. Supporting The xx and SVIIB soon too...
Free Energy
are going to do a Girls I reckon, they have the 70s indie-posterboy looks to boot.
wicked tunes too.
this
the drums
little comets
delphic
ellie goulding
music go music
kid adrift
I'm biased...
But Detachments anyone? Finishing their album with James Ford in January and Zane Lowe is a fan...
Without doing any/enough research to back this up
Wasn't pretty much everyone on the previous lists or at least last year's on a major - this list is not about tipping something unsigned or that hasn't got a lot of money behind it.
If we're talking major labels:
HURTS
Just reportedly signed a 1 million pound record deal with Sony and are making an album sharpish:
http://musicfansmic.com/2009/10/30/hurts/
I have to say the HURTS single....
'Wonderful Life' is a liitle rich for me! I can certainly see it being very popular, especially if Sony get their production hands on it! 80's new romantics ahoy!
Little Comets FTW
Columbia have been holding them all year.
I can't believe I just typed that.
I made music sound like sport.
uggggh
What do the bbc know? they just know how much money is going to be spent ramming these acts down our throat.
er
the list comes from about 120 in-the-know people, including, er, me
Their list last year was pretty spot on?
Apart from being too obvious in places.
This is pretty much what I was driving at
It's about now that labels leverage their big new names into the conscious ahead of early 2010's proper launch, and sure enough in the last week I've started seeing Goulding's name around a lot. The interesting thing this year will be how much the industry is willing to put behind bands like Everything Everything or Dinosaur Pile-Up who have 'the right people' impressed but don't necessarily chime with the times.
I would be suprised
If there were a lot of bands in there, is a lot harder to pick bands than poppier stuff. Little Comets look like a safe bet as does this goulding character and I would have said Chipmunk but that appears to be happening already... crap like that mostly.
You got to have your safe bets
Then there's the other side of the coin, I'm thinking about across the pond. American & Canadian bands that have been loved by pitchfork (and the like)and have seen some success off the back it but wouldn't really shake anyone here. I mean bands like Cymbals Eat Guitars, The Rural Alberta Advantage, The Antlers and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.
Would a publication over here put these bands into one of these lists without knowing if they get much of a push (marketing wise) over here?
...Or is it just British bands that are considered for these things, I forget.
*This is all an actually a question by the way*
First Aid Kit
.
Help Stamp Out Lonliness are a good bet.
You really reckon?
Summer Camp
Summer Camp, Summer Camp, Summer Camp: http://www.myspace.com/morganwaves
SO GOOD. Get the impression they're some kind of Spector-esque group, they're being very secretive and not doing press or anything like that until the first release is ready. All I know is that they're a mix of boys and girls. Originally their Myspace said they were from Sweden, but that's since disappeared...
The Safe Bet Top 10 (and thus probably the final BBC Top 10)
1) Ellie Goulding
2) Tinie Tempah
3) Jack Splash
4) Frankie And The Heartstrings
5) Ke$ha
6) I Blame Coco (Sting's daughter)
7) The Drums
8) Stornoway
9) Bicycle Thieves
10) Marina And The Diamonds
Jack Splash is a producer, but doing an album
And it's got a ton of big names on it. Sony are throwing money at it. Thus a very safe bet.
Stornoway are a very decent shout actually,
As are Frankie and the Heartstrings who I am not personally very enamoured with but ho hum.
Was Marina and the Diamonds bigged up last year? and does she have any good songs?
That Kesha bird will do well too I think
Definitely second
Stornoway.
Last night at the Sheldonian in Oxford was a super treat.
To answer Reclaim Your Brain
You can vote for American acts in the BBC Sound Of poll (hence including Jack Splash and The Drums) but, after The Bravery won one year, most people shy away from that.
Didn't realise it was a poll, so to speak.
thought it was more of a thinktank kind of deal.
Touch back on what I said above, it's probably difficult to pick American acts as our market and their market differ so what. I mean Kings Of Leon and The Killers are supposed to be way more popular here than they are in America.
I see the The Drums not really being a banker, I did listen to the Summertime! EP and I did like it, I think their success might hinge on the style of music they play being "cool" again next year. That said, the single would be popular any year.
Dinosaur Pile up...
....although I already thought they had done a lot this year.
Funeral Suits
And I personally like Autumn Owls.
I just saw Stornoway play to 800 people at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford,
could easily see them getting on lots of "to watch" lists..
I hadn't thought about them
because for the critical acclaim of their couple of singles they hadn't got a lot of press attention otherwise or radio, but they're on Jools next week so someone's got plans for them. Again, I suppose on a BBC Sound Of level it depends on whether the odd-indie pop/folk thing still has commercial legs.
How ace was that?!
Managed to sneak in at the last after nearly missing the train up there.
Stornoway are more than deserving
really incredible how well they're doing, having been in on them from pretty much the start (you know I'm cool). They seem to be keeping unbelievably tight lipped, I personally can't believe that a deal isn't pretty much done already.
The Helmholtz Resonators
The Helmholtz Resonators
Dancing Pigeons
Bo Ningen
I hope Major Lazer blow up next year
Their record has masses of crossover appeal
Also:
Stornoway
Esben and the Witch
Everything Everything
Ali Love (his new material is amazing)
Ellie Goulding
if The Cheek aren't on it
i'll be very very surprised
I should actually add a band to this
Avi Buffalo
Sound just like a younger version of The Shins.
They're the most deserving of the contenders, along with Bicycle Thieves
Stornoway might not pick up too many mainstream NME/Radio 1 tips, but the broadsheets/Uncut types are all over them. As are Later - putting them on as the new band among Foos, Jay-Z and Stingo this week is a very big deal. And I can only imagine everyone will swoon within the first 30 seconds of Zorbing or Unfaithful.
A label deal about to be signed, I gather.
Wiley
I mean Chipmunk or Tinchy Stryder... the guys he brought through. They have both had a lot of press already though and some number ones so they maybe wont be tipped for this as they're already to far gone. Wiley could do with a push though he brought all these guys thru Tinchy, Dizzee, Chip... on pirate radio and onto stuff like westwood, plus made the Rolex Sweep tune which set the formular for all of them to break thru to pop. He's back with more pop stuff this coming year with beats from Lady Ga Ga's producer... and god knows what else. I think they're all just playing the game to get cash while they can though so if you tip them and they make loads of cash this next few years they might all be back making good music again after thatso go on tip away all of um... apart from Chip he's not to hot anyway...
Far too established to be a Sound Of contender
Tinie Tempah will steal all his votes.
CHEW LIPS
already got a few mentions on here. Shameless promotion, but they're playing a free gig on Tuesday at The Fly on New Oxford Street if anyone fancies it....
but they're shit though
local natives
delphic
two door cinema club
spectrals
Dutch Uncles
yeah, I like Dutch Uncles
oh for those who don't know whose "won" it previous years
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_of..._(BBC_poll)
...play spot the acts who didn't sell 100k+ plus records. It's even harder to spot the acts who weren't on major labels with (hit) singles already out.
The Drums,,,,,,,,,,, er NO!!
I wish everyone would shut up about the Drums - they have ONE song! and they are awful live
On another note - Dananananaykroyd are utter tripe, go away
I know there's another newer(?) thread
but no mention of Beth Jeans Houghton yet? Probably one more for the broadsheet side of things but there we go. Likely something from the chill-wave genre would make it, Washed Out most likely as they don't have an album out yet.
Most names seem to have been mentioned; Casio Kids as they are on MM. Egyptian Hip Hop, Lola & the Clic, Get Shakes, Lulu and the Lampshades, Miike Snow, Muchuu, Soft Toy Emergency, The Good Natured
, MidiMidis, We Have Band.
Sketches??!!
my choices
Ellie Goulding
Delphic
Marina And The Diamonds
Devlin
Griminal
Soft Toy Emergency
Kesha
The Drums
Tiny Tempah
Griminal
is alright, his girly mainstream stuff is a load of pap though but thats not gonna stop him getting on this list is it, its pretty much what you need to be to get on this list. I'm not keen on Devlin but I guess he has something. This Tiny Tempah person is a non entity though...
My list
Delphic
Exit Calm
There Will Be Fireworks
The Drums
The Domino State
After listening to Stornoway I have a feeling that Radio 2 will pick up on their music. Exit Calm's album's due out in the Spring and from what I've heard, it sounds stunning.
Good to see The Domino State
and Exit Calm getting a mention after we featured them here a while back...http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4136700-shoegaze-week--discover-93-million-miles-from-the-sun-the-domino-state-and-ringo-deathstarr?search. Both should have albums out in the early part of 2010 and if recent live shows are anything to go by both are exciting prospects indeed. The Domino State are also playing with The Depreciation Guild on Thursday at the Wilmington for anyone in London not going to Reverence.
Joy Orbison
Spectrals
Stornoway
Two Door Cinema Club
Magic Kids
Would reckon at least 2 or 3 of those will be on the longlist anyway. Joy Orbison is the man to beat though (if there's any justice).
Ellie Goulding is a gimme
The Drums
Marina and the Diamonds
Wolf gang
Delphic
First Aid Kit
Japanese Voyeurs
Dinosaur Pile-up ( although they don't deserve it )
Now that Two Door Cinema Club are being championed...
by Kanye West, it would be foolish for them not to be included on this year's list.
Also, Domino State? That's a blast from the past. I saw them supporting M83 last year. Thought they'd faded away.
hmmm
Two Door Cinema Club
Ellie Goulding
The Drums
Giggs
Devlin
Hurts
Everything Everything ??
Ke$ha
Claire Mcguire
it would be mad to see giggs get a look in
he only talks about killing people, shagging and selling coke, it would give the whole grime scene a boost knowing they could keep doing their thing and make money and they'd maybe stop making shit electro tracks and pre-teen R&B. Not that giggs is grime like but it would still give grime a little boost. Unless giggs has loads of pre-teen R&B on his album next year, which would be so creepy...
Now may be the time to let you know
Alcxxk and I are in a band called Shitler.
havent practiced yet but, y'know: Not December yet.
yeah flashguns are excellent, they were on the levi's ones to watch tour weren't they but they never really got bigger after that
...
I'm not talking about Number 1's and Top 40 stardom but I really think Surfer Blood will do very well next year in the Indie-Rock circle. I'm sure they have been Pitchfork'd already and will continue to do so. Their album 'Astro Coast' is definately in my top 10 of the year and it gets an official label release in January.
Crème Brûlée
some interesting stuff on this thread
There Will Be Fireworks have released one of my favourite cds this year.
My favourite band with nowt out is The Neat, and in the same sort of vein The Disconcerts are good new old new wave!
first post ever but im not that simple
i think it could be the year that dananananananananakroyd get some sort of recognition on the mainstream front. to be fair i hope so as they deserve it as their high octane shows have been a highlight for me over the past year and a bit.
same goes for pulled apart by horses.
Already mentioned are detroit social club as they were top at truck in july.
have the bbc got it right though in the past?
i think
the list is going to be announced this week - anyone changed their mind about anything?
joke
that list is a joke, arty farties.
wheres the rock n roll bands???????
is this 'revealed' on monday then?
HURTS in with a good shout i think. also Gold Panda are ace.
I think they've introduced me to "my new least favourite band"
The Drums. I fucking despair, I really do.
Top 5 announced this week
on a day-by-day basis.
5. The Drums
4. Hurts
Delphic are top 5 too as Laverne gave it away on her show. I reckon them or Marina to win it.
yeah i'd say delphic or joy orbison (quite a bit of hype about him recently)
on another note, flash guns are pretty decent too, i seen them last year at 1234shoreditch and were one of the highlights
Pulled apart by horses
Ftw!!
Fuck it also Dinosaur pile up!
i'd have thought they'd maybe want to avoid another solo female
act this year after the adele/boots wins of the last 2 years. but maybe not.
safari for 2010+
www.myspace.com/thisissafari
my tip
agreed
good shout
LOL
is nobody going to call this guy out?
why...
is everyone so keen on who's going to be big in 2010? are 2009's artists and bands so shit in retrospect? well, yeah, probably. so, in 2011 everyone is desperate for the new sounds. because everyone all of a sudden realises that in retrospect hotly tipped music for 2010 was a bit shit. and, actually, not hot at all, but a bit heard it all before...
Just be aware.
This list was always designed for the MOR moms who 'don't mind a bit of Back to Black' and were 'really suprised that they'd never heard of Elbow before 2008'.
Nothing on it is/will be particularly cool.
It was never meant to be.
