a whole DISC of between-song chatter.
Elvis and Robert Pollard have done this before. the difference is Tom's will actually be good. probably.
Quite useful for mixtapes when you only have a few seconds left on the side
is talkie bits from inbetween songs
is that they've separated them out. They should have left them between the songs like Nighthawks at the Diner
Even though Nighthawks was a set up live album, I'd agree with that. Either way, I can't wait. The sampler is really good, and his storytelling is excellent!
I'm just going to jag the old review I did. Apologies in advance.
It's not just going to be some polite "thank you, my name is Tom Waits" (a sentence he's probably never actually ever said!)
it's sort of like Tom Waits on storytellers, er, without the songs - which you probably have anyway if you're a fan, I like the concept. Then again, can compare it to kristin hersh shows where you can show up as much to hear her telling stories and anecdotes as much as the songs.
the most pretention prick award goes to elvis costello, I hate that duck. http://www.elviscostello.info/disc/official/trir/trir.jpg
It's cool. Lou Reed released a live LP that was unedited so included loads of banter in it.
The most pretentious artist on Earth is probably Kevin Barnes.
such as Eddie Vedder rambling about the great barrier reef, unneccesary stadiums in Seattle, Mike McCready mis-hearing KISS lyrics...
Would you be able to point me in the way of this mate?
There are a couple of VU live releases that he shares a fair bit of banter too.
but this is no way the most pretentious thing he's done (his last european tour comes to mind)
part of his allure is the playing of a character..which he freely admits he does. I'd be disappointed if he put out a 'regular' live album. it wouldn't be a Tom Waits album otherwise.
Do you not like music or something?
As in shallowly seeking attention in a completely egtotistical way? Kinda like the trolling OP.
Just because you don't agree with manbearpig there is no reason to accuse him of not liking music, trolling and being 'egtotistical'.
'egtotistical' like 'don'tlike' simple typo. I chose to overlook this as it's simply beneath me. Congrats on pedantry. Accusation? Nope. I posed a question. See question mark at end of post. It struck me as trolling on my 17th post on this board. I apologise as having an opinion contrary to anyone elses. Consider me bitchslapped and thank you for the nice welcome.
quite a simple one. is there an artist around that has a higher opinion of their importance than Waits? it's not a comment on the quality of his music. i'm quite the fan. i just thought it was a valid question
Damon Albarn for one. And I'll qualify that by saying I like some of his output, but find him to be quite the little uppity tit.
How can you not be vibrating with excitement at the prospect of a whole disc of this glorious man's stage banter? He's possibly the single most interesting dude in music.
it's completely rehearsed, the guy used the same lines at every date of his european tour
is pretty integral to his live set, as well as his albums. if you listen to 'Rain Dogs' the monologue is then pretty much repeated in the Big Time film, it's just like a stand up comedian. his stories are twisted and funny, and Tom Waits fans will lap up the 2nd disc. as someone else said though, it's a shame it's been separated onto an individual record, kinda takes it out of context
then you know you won't be going "So... lotta people here tonight... Uh... this song's a b-side from our second single. It's, um, yeah, a song. It was written by me and it's about, like, y'know, something I'm gonna pretend you have an interest in."
I'd rather bands just stayed silent in between songs rather than go into that shit. Or just thrashed through all their songs in one breath, like Times New Viking. Or shot up. Or anything.
I've wanted to know for a while.
You will get a ton of different answers, which says a lot to his diversity.
My personal favorite is Mule Variations.
And then perhaps Bone Machine or Mule Variations.
As mentioned above... that's my personal opinion. But it's all been pretty darn good over the last twenty years.
But I'd say the right one for a first outing is Small Change. His more rhythm based albums with his Howling Wolf growl take a bit more getting used. Small Change is a good way to ease in to his world as well as being utterly brilliant in it's own right.
Much more than a musician.
Phoenix was the first show and he barely talked much at all, so I will be all over that 2nd disc.
Tom can get away with it. i love the story stuff on disc 3 of orphans...but love both Bone Machine and Small Change hell of alot....at least with Tom his musics changed slightly as he's grown older and like the rest of us learns and absorbs more as we carry on......i'll prob listen to some of the Talky bits but not in one go....now that would be a bit mental.
And who cares if its been rehearsed? So have all the songs. He makes no pretense about the "banter" being spontaneous. You're an idiot.
but i know the difference between pretence and pretention. you've completely misunderstood my question, well done
is it pretentious to release a cd of a performance which is spoken word?
you can appreciate an artist and at the same time acknowledge how pretentious they are.
yes,i think separating all his anecdotes on to one disc rather than leaving them as they were recorded inbetween numbers is pretentious. i think charging fans 130 quid for the privilege of seeing him from seats with restricted views (as in restricted by pillars and whatnot) is pretentious. i think his thing that he does live where he actually invites standing ovations is pretentious. in short, i think he's the most pretentious artist around, whether or not it's justified. i wanted to know if anyone else thought the same. instead, a load of people have got their noses out of joint. although i'll admit i could have predicted that: in that sense, there's maybe an element of trolling involved, i'll hold my hands up. can't help myself sometimes
also, there isn't really a difference.
if not, then no.....
That's the thing about taking pot shots at Sacred Cows (like Mr Waits) if you back it up immediately with your opinion, people can like it or lump it. You simply make an inflammatory statement or imply one by posing an inflammatory question, people are going to get their noses out of joint and accuse you of trolling. Like me. I still don't agree with you, but you've made a point expressed an opinion... I can now disagree with you in a much more respectful fashion. You're wrong nernernerner ;-)
from the sampler are orgasmic...!
the cover artwork is pretty terrible.
