Harsh noise/ noise in general

Killtherythm [Edit] [Delete] 32 replies 20:25, 11 October '09

how is it made , what instruments/processes/programs do people use to make noise really enojying bands like The Gerogerigegege, merzbow, maldoror , hanatarash ect and stuff like merry go bye/bye by mr bungle that mixes it with standard music so any recomendations would also be awesome as im pretty new to the genre.

My advice is to go to YouTube and search for live performances by these musicians.

P.S. Also, if you haven't already, track down a copy of 'Metal Machine Music' by Lou Reed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Machine_Music

metal machine music looks pretty interesting just getting it now

    • no

Unfortunately MMM is really boring. Just get some Throbbing Gristle and be done with it.

      • Boring?

Why do you think it's boring?

Even if you have a valid reason/reasons, it was an influence on Merzbow (his first official release was called 'Metal Acoustic Music': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Acoustic_Music), who the poster mentioned, and is generally considered a seminal work in Noise.

Suggesting someone listen to it and form their own opinion is like suggesting someone who wants to write plays read Shakespeare, Beckett, etc.

  • anything really

    that was the original point.

'Harsh noise purists'/cunts will prescribe a dozen or so vintage DOD pedals that MUST INCLUDE distortion/EQ/filter; contact and contact mics and bits of metal.

A signal created is by a feedback loop which is created by inserting the output of a chain of pedals into the input nad manipulated by filters/or the addition of mics.
You are deemed a worthy hash noisist if you have enough money to buy vintage pedals.

A ZOOM multieffects spells NOOB unless you're name is Kylie Mynoise.

    ---------------------
For everyone else noise is created by any sound source you wish whether that be digital or not. Harsh noise is more concerned with texture rather than tonality so the use of lots of filters is common to bring out more sybtle elements from the 'wall of noise'.

'noisy' music and 'noise' in general can mean anything from 'noisy rock' which is tonal to what I described above. Which is atonal

    • lol. everytime I see a guitarist with a multi-effects zoom type thing

a small part of me dies inside.
all you really need is distortion of some form and volume (and some imagination).
although I guess you can get some distort through volume itself, its not quite as fun.

    • except

I saw Esquilax at Bardens a couple of years back where they did a set of screaming into mics through Zoom pedals, then again it wasn't the best set ever.
A few months on though a guy called Pleasurehorse supported parts and labor there and he was using these odd disc things and a caculator rigged up to a mac to do a noise set, and it was absolutely stunning

      amyblue @countzero | 12 Oct '09, 14:39 | X
      • I was at that gig

He was supporting White Mice, right? I was thoroughly impressed with Pleasurehorse- initially I thought he was using some art programme or something. I want to know what it is!

      • km WITH A BASS ZOOM is always amazing

        I use a boss me50 myself!

You jsut get idiots that dismiss this.

Ironically a lot of people who go on about using true 'analogue' pedals are acutally using digital modelling pedals anyway (???)

        countzero @amyblue | 12 Oct '09, 18:20 | X
    • The only time it's acceptable is if those zoom pedels have been hacked

to make some sick custom built goodness!

      Ichor @countzero | 12 Oct '09, 14:49 | X
      • that's right

White mice were bloody brilliant too, and DJ Scotch Egg had sound issues that made everything sound like atari teenage riot, which I actually enjoyed...

Ichor, any idea how to hack a zoom pedal? I've got five of the first style ones (the reverb one is the best pedal EVER) but ye gods the other ones suck apart from about two good sounds per pedal.

        amyblue @Ichor | 12 Oct '09, 15:09 | X
        • ask tim from cementimental

          he's got a zoom collection.

The bass b1 is very nice for noise- but I think others have come to the same conclusion and prices on ebay have skyrocketed!

          countzero @amyblue | 12 Oct '09, 17:10 | X
        • You don't really need to hack those things

The 505 is pretty capable of making some really nasty sounds on it's own. Just don't use individual effects or the factory presets.

  • merzbow creates his own synth patches on software

    such as max/msp

    countzero | 12 Oct '09, 01:10 | X
    • Max/msp is a good way but if I was going to make noise

I'd most likely use reaktor because it has a better sound quality. Max is better for low level sound manipulation.

Or if you wanna be REALLY cool you could look into using Supercollider. Also Supercollider is free ;)

      Ichor @countzero | 12 Oct '09, 14:51 | X
      • erm

I would disagree that reaktor 'sounds better'....maybe reaktor already has 'good sounding' modules that may suit your tastes.

If you want better sound quality in max, you just code one yourself.

Reaktor is much more user friendly and most of the work is done for you. I do prefer using it to max for this reason.

I'm working with puredata now which is free.

I used to use supercollider which you could create some crazy synths with.

BUT FOR PROPER OLD-SKOOL MANGING YOU WANT THIS:
        http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul99/articles/retrosteinberg.htm

I bagged a copy off ebay for 50 quid.

You can create some really harsh stuff.

I used it in my last gig by dumping all the patches to a sampler

        countzero @Ichor | 12 Oct '09, 17:17 | X
  • the DOD death metal pedal is hardly vintage

    is it?

    alittlecreature | 12 Oct '09, 01:59 | X
    • you know what I mean

but it's sad how nowadays noise=gearporn

      countzero @alittlecreature | 12 Oct '09, 17:19 | X
      • yeah, i agree :-)

its nice to have toys, but on a personal level, i'm increasingly convinced that less is more.
had a shitty gig a while back when i literally surrounded myself with gear. ridiculous amounts.
naturally, we start and nothing fucking works. i ended up screaming thru an amp.
        probably the best result. :-)

noise has become just another genre now.
        meh.

        alittlecreature @countzero | 12 Oct '09, 22:04 | X
  • distort everything and turn everything up till you get feedback (bar the microphones of course)

    thecrikster | 12 Oct '09, 14:24 | X
    • why "bar the microphones"?

      berksy @thecrikster | 12 Oct '09, 17:35 | X
      • up to you of course

But I don't think I've ever known someone who enjoys microphone feedback. besides it kind of gets in the way of whatever you are trying to use the microphone for.

        thecrikster @berksy | 12 Oct '09, 18:09 | X
  • there is some great noise...and boring noise

i don't think i could ever quanitfy what makes it one or the other....

keiji haino is worth checking, although not strictly noise...more black ritual, his collaboration with merzbow is awesome...
go and check Wraiths...they put on an ace live show...

but, and this is what i came in here to post, if 'merry go bye bye' tickles your fancy, i would (well, i would) highly recommend getting
Riders on the Conquering Worm: http://www.mediafire.com/?ddjzzydlznk

it's noise(both harsh and not so harsh, but always spooky) combined with underground hip-hop.... :-D

keep DiS updated should this be confirmed! Need to see Merzbow live again...

  • you might want to check out places like

    http://www.noiseguide.com/board/
    http://www.noisefx.com/

But generally it's made by whatever you want. When I did a bit of harsh noise stuff, I used a feedback loop of pedals going into my laptop running various VSTs in AudioMulch. A lot of people use purely FX pedal set-ups, some use microphones, others make instruments, others use only computers... Oh, the possibilities!

Check this shit out tho: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUM6fZFYWzk

    • man THIS IS THE BEST XOME VID I'VE SEEN!

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBUyBfpytow&feature=related

He uses some circuit breaker tied to the table legs I think!

      countzero @berksy | 12 Oct '09, 17:43 | X
  • alot of stuff to consider

are there any synths you can get or anything as a sort of all in one that you could use more easily in a band type situation and sileni is ok but i dont see any relation to merry go bye bye

    Killtherythm | 12 Oct '09, 20:19 | X
  • If you can't make harsh noise with a mixer and a couple of multi-fx then you have no idea what you are doing and just throw money at the problem buying a bunch of rare DOD pedals on ebay. :)

Zoom multi-fx are great, you don't need to circuitbend them (tho it seems the results can be good, i haven't tried yet) but you do need an expression pedal for full use of them. Or do what I did an make a box with a bunch of knobs connected to stereo jack sockets and a few stereo patch cables = expression pedal substitute for multiple devices.

    Cementimental | 10 Nov '09, 10:55 | X
  • i saw mike patton & fennesz once

and my friend (who worked at the venue) asked mike what the machine was he was using to distort his voice. His reply: I don't know, a friend made it for me and if i turn the knobs the sound is just amazing.
So yeah, a little unrelated but a nice anecdote nonetheless
