I trot this thread out like i've been married to it for 30 years and I didn't like it much in the first place. Sleeping in separate bedrooms cos of my loud snoring, TV up loud in the evenings so we can't hear our thoughts anymore. It's sad dudes. It's sad.
You know what isn't sad though? BABY HUEY & HIS BABYSITTERS.
Also there is a massive Norman records sale on for the rest of the weekend only, check it out. Some great cheap cds/lps there. Stuff from many fine labels like Drag City and Holy Mountain and Dischord. ETC

Lots of fancy new-fangled stuff this week
1 Enablers 39
2 Keelhaul 37
3 Shrinebuilder 30
4 Celan 23
4 Pelican 23
6 Led Bib 19
6 David Sylvian 19
8 A Storm of Light 13
9 Porn 11
9 Boris 11
9 Fennesz 11
1) Got Tundra, along with some other stuff from Southern. Really great, the most exciting thing I've heard for a while that has anything to do with post-rock. Going to pick up the rest of their stuff, I think.
2) Triumphant Return To Obscurity is really great, there's a really impressive balance of mathiness and heaviness and melody, and just some really good songwriting.
3) It didn't blow me away immediately, but it's growing on me quite a lot. It's pretty mellow, considering who's involved. It's tempting to think of it as similar to what Mastodon were trying to achieve with Crack The Skye, but far better executed.
4a) Halo is really cool. Awesome riffs, and the the more industrial/avant-garde bits you can pick out really make it fresh and exciting.
4b) New one is pretty good. I'd always avoided Pelican, thinking they were at the more boring post-rock end of post-metal, but this has some very nice riffs throughout, and very few cliched 'slow melancholy build to huge crescendo' bits that plague most of this type of stuff.
6a) Sensible Shoes is a very good album. It's a lot more melodic than their last one, some bits come dangerously close to even being hooks. Recommended for fans of this new wave of british jazz stuff.
6b) Manafon. Interesting, and pretty nice. Some fantastic moments, like the sax solo on emily dickinson, but it might be better if Sylvian didn't sing over so much of his collaborator's work.
8) New album, much like the old album, with a few marked developments here and there. Recommended for anybody looking for something different but still safely in the Neurosis/Isis school of post-metal.
9a) Got The Devil Makes Three. Unfortunately it's pretty boring really, Merzbow just makes a lot of thick, uninteresting noise, and when the band does show up they're just playing run of the mill sludge under it all. Might need more listens I suppose, but I'm not really feeling much of an urge to go back to it anytime soon.
9b) New 7". Rather good, but a quite strange. There's some reference to the sound of the Japan mix of Smile, but there's also more big pop-hooks. Some Jesu style Metal-Gaze on 8 too. Be interesting to see if this ends up as an interesting but isolated offshoot or if they do more stuff in this style.
Hay if you like 'Tundra'
you'll love the other two cos they are miles better!
I will get some Shrinebuilder but when you think about it they only jammed/wrote/recorded together for a few days so you can't really expect the best thing ever imho
Cool
I'll look to get those two albums as well then. Yeah, I heard that the Shrinebuilder album was recorded in 3 days, which is pretty impressive, but I think they must have written for longer - I recall Scott Kelley's blog about recording seemed to go on for a few weeks. It is a good album, but it suffers from a lack on any really memorable riffs I think, though there are great individual bits here and there.
And I forgot to add
Tundra's packaging is really cool - the album comes in a wooden box, with a bit of velvety cloth inside. Plus a bit on the booklet tells me I have no.730 out of 1300 made. Definitely something where it's worth getting the physical product.
aye!
the other boxes are pretty standard. Very standard actually.
And it starts like
1 Johnny Foreigner 62
2 The Mountain Goats 24
3 Broadcast and The Focus Group 23
4 Kill It Kid 22
5 The Lovely Eggs 14
6 Julian Plenti 11
6 Pulp 11
6 The Leisure Society 11
9 Blue Roses 10
9 Les Savy Fav 10
3 Of which precisely one is like what one would describe as a proper song. More Focus Group than Broadcast.
4 Surprised more people aren't picking up on their album - seems to be getting either amazing reviews or ignored.

6. a Passing Away <3 <3 <3
I scrolled all the way through it
I can't remember what was in it now though :( They definitely have a load of old Melvins for £6 a time and some cool Ghost stuff on Drag City. I only got one old Six Organs cd though cos it was all I should really be spending.
Oh yeah! They have 'Walk To The Fire' by Monoshock for £5.40 which is supremely good
http://www.headheritage.co.uk/unsung/albumofthemonth/721
What Six Organs one was that?
It's mighty tempting, given how gay I am for Ben Chasny but I've spent far too much money on records this week. And I've been meaning to check out Ghost. And any album with an opening track titled Crypto-zoological disaster has got to be awesome. Gah.
it was compathia
i was tempted by it but then i've got luminous night in the post so i should wait a bit.
thanks for the heads up on the norman sales though.

4. Dark Night of the Soul is pretty damn good
7. Mama I'm Swollen is also good
8a My friend forced me to like "Meet Me Halfway" :(
10. Wondered what the song at the end of The Hurt Locker was, discovered it was on Rio Grande Blood (I don't listen to it much) WHERE'S BIN LADEN?
Has Tijs got a new album out?
I really want to do a trance/progressive house thread one day, but I'm afraid that you will be the only one who'll reply...
:(
It's his least trancey yet
Half of it veers towards the dancier pop stuff that is currently popular, especially the Nelly Furtado track.. boy's gonna get himself on the radio if he doesn't watch himself! The Kele track is quite nice, I'm prepared to give Intimacy another listen. Fans are divisive over this album.. you're either gonna love it or hate it, and I love it :D
I'm listening to In Search of Sunrise 6 atm.. fantastic for chillaxing to :)
also while I'm here, John O'Callaghan Y/N?
I liked what I heard on the radio the other night..

5) up there with Cuban Linx II as one of this year's strongest rap albums. Primo-esque boom-bap. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes that sort of thing.
6b) the Peel sessions album is amazing. Horizontal Hold is staggering.
11) have to say I was pretty disappointed with them in Manchester in midweek. Are their sets usually 25 minutes long? The whole thing felt a bit half-arsed, except the drummer, who is a dude.
I think we could get along.
That Marco and Torae is nice for real. Cuban Linx is on another level to me tho, but its still nice.
Six Organs are playing just down the road from me in December,
which is nice.

1: Old school and new school Jamie Lidell. Shockingly... while his avant garde stuff is pretty awesome, he's just too damn good a soulsmith these days.
2: I have come to the conclusion that they're the American Elbow. This is no bad thing, but no doubt that'll set some idiot into apoplexy at the mere insinuation.
3: Clearlake deserve so much more than they get. It's heartbreaking, Cedars should have made the p4k top 200 of 2000.
4: Happy people have no stories
5: Oh look, it's Datassette. Again. I swear Datassette is going to accidentally end up being my no.1 artist on last.fm
9: OH HAI Richard D James under yet another name. When's the new album out?
12: A Three-Legged Workhorse remains one of the finest slices of Post-Rock since the whole movement started.

New Evangelista is pretty good. Undecided if it is better than Hello, Voyager though.
Celan is ok. May be a grower but not as good as the sum of the original parts.
Nothing can compete with the MuDvAyNe up there though^^ unfortunately.
kudos for actually putting the mudvayne capital letters in the right place
Yeh, it took me a while to work out the intricate mathematical system they use to know where a capital letter goes...
but i got there in the end.
well you could have got it the wrong way around
nobody on here would have forgiven for that basic Mudvayne error

2 - Still amazing, serious love form me, am pretty gutted that i only started listening after they played in London.
3a - well, i gave it ago, its nice but not completely compelling.
3b -on the other hand is awesome, mainly tundra and its full of riffs and choons and greatness.
5a - now firmly stuck in my favourite bands group
5b - should branch out to more than VS.
7 - Hmmm, just getting into them. Good.
11d - Put death consciousness on one afternoon, it really is a bit epic. might put it on again this afternoon.
8.9/10
Unsane are pretty good
there are only so many bands I need with photos of dead/murdered people on their album covers though. Maybe i'm getting old. See also that Cherubs album with the guy lying face down in the bath.
hmmm, dead people.
oddly i started with Visqueen, is that the way to do it or should i start from the beginning?
idk too much actually
someone will have a better idea. They didn't exactly evolve or anything so you're probably ok!

04b Still loving I'm Going Away.
Nude In Boots (2008)
and Senile Animal (2006) are the two the Melvins have done with the Big Business guys. They're both great, but you might want to think of picking up Bullhead and possibly Stag first, as those two are pretty much Melvins classics. Though it's all good really.
Cheers
Once this fucking postal strike is done I'll get on it. It's just I'm seeing them in Dec and wouldn't mind being familiar with some of their newer stuff you know.
If you can find your way to a Fopp
you should be able to find Bullhead and Stag for £5 each. I think they're still priced like that in the Cambridge one. I'm not sure what set up the Melvins have been touring with recently, but if the Big Business guys aren't with them in december they might play less new stuff. I'm really not sure though.
