"Just got" as in
"just learnt to appreciate", or "just acquired"?
literally just acquired
picked them up this afternoon
did you go see Celan?
nope
which may be something I regret if I like the record (and I probably will). But that thread, as well as a positive review from Rock a Rolla was what motivated me to add it to my Southern basket.
Halo is awesome
in every old-skool way!!!
Shrinebuilder- got my mate's copy..nowt special but can't stop listening to it!
Haven't heard much of a storm of light..seems bit too post metal bullshit to me
boris..I'll pass.
But Halo is mint!
Storm Of Light
are indeed very 'post-metal', although perhaps a bit doomier than, say, Isis. However, the two tracks on the Primitive North split they did with Nadja where really good, and this record features vocals from Jarboe and spoken word from Lydia Lunch, as well as others, so I have pretty high hopes for something interesting. Again, it got a pretty positive review in Rock A Rolla too.
oh my jarboe and lydia lunch
just confirms that it's a big pile of poo.
I sound like a cunt. soz. Ill stop.
But like I said Halo makes up for all of it!
Ha, don't worry about it
I can totally see why someone wouldn't like Jarboe's stuff - I'm a fan, but when her stuff goes wrong it's really bad. And I think pretty much everyone is getting bored with Post-Metal - If anything A Storm Of Light are good despite being so Post-Metal. Though I should probably wait before I actually hear the album before I commit myself to defending them.
btw borders have stopped stocking rock a rolla
where can i buy it now?
I used to pick it up from Borders when I could
but generally I just order it from their site - cost £4 with postage, turns up in a couple of days.
I subscribed online couple of weeks ago
only £15 for 1 year (6 issues). Or you can subscribe for two years for only 25 quid.
I would subscribe
but uni means I spend the year pretty much equally in two different places. I'll get one as soon as I get a properly fixed address.

Bet the people that go to Wacken are worse....
immortal!!!! \m/
At least those that go to wacken and hellfest are honest about their love of metal/corpse paint/burning turkish immigrants..
What's the Boris one like?
I'd love to have ordered the whole series but just can't afford it. Gutted, as they're one of my favourite bands.
The Shrinebuilder track I heard sounded dreadful. Had some horrible phaser on all the clean guitar parts.
It's interesting, and pretty odd
even from a band with output as varied as Boris. 8 is pretty shoegazey, opens up with a really Jesu-esque riff mixed low, but then about a minute and a half in loud, fast drums and guitar kicks in - initially this seemed really jarring, almost like an entirely different song starting up, but it's grown on me after a few listens. It also has My Bloody Valentine style sigh/whoops for the vocals, and a pretty great windswept guitar solo from Wata. The other track, Hey Everyone, is even stranger - it's sort of like the Japanese mix of the smile stuff, at least in the simple, distorted drum beat, and the fuzzy noise everywhere, but it the vocals are pretty strange - they're sort layered over each other, and there's a sort of power-pop hook in there. Unfortunately I don't really think I can describe the songs very well, I can only recommend you try and find some way of listening to them really.
Which of these don't have screamy vocals (in the style of isis) that'll piss me off
please? thanks.
it's more doom rock crooning
celan is more hardcore perplexed shouting courtesy of chris spencer
apart from boris
who are shit in my opinion....but lots of instrumental-y stuff
The Boris 7"
has 'clean' vocals, though pretty odd ones. A Storm Of Light's vocals are probably less harsh than Isis's heavier bits, but still pretty gravelly. Shrinebuilder is pretty gravelly, Scott Kelly has some more growly stuff, but it's not that frequent. Wino's vocals are quite gravelly too, but in a sort of classic rock way. Al Cisnero's OM style chanting vocals make an appearance too. I haven't listened to the Celan album yet, but I expect the vocals on that are going to be pretty 'screamy'.
Ok, now that I've listened to all these at least once,
here are some initial thoughts:
A Storm Of Light - Alright, but not as good as the EP material. In fact, on the whole it's really pretty much the same as the first album. The textures and stuff have developed a bit, but nothing major.
Boris - A bit strange, but growing on me, the first track in particular. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with over the next 7"'s, and what there next album will be like.
Celan - Really cool; both the noise rock bits and the avant-garde bits are great, and the slightly awkward way they sit together on the record adds a pretty thrilling sense of tension, as well as resulting in actual melodies and things on the last track.
Shrinebuilder - Pretty great; it's not as immediately impressive as I was hoping, but it's definitely good, and it feels like it'll grow on me. Pyramid Of The Moon (which I still like) is more or less the only track which ends up having a clear cut Scott Kelly bit and a Wino bit and an Al Cisneros bit, whereas they sound much more like a cohesive band on the other tracks, though you can still pick out each individual's contribution.
Good selection of albums!
Have to say I've been impressed with the new A Storm Of Light album - think it's a great improvement on the first (never heard the EP though). Particularly with Josh Graham's vocals, which on the first album were always not quite right to me but have improved massively here. Also I think the developed textures on this album have made quite a bit of difference to the overall feel. I wasn't expecting much but it delivered a lot.
The Celan album is pretty damn good too, although regret deciding not to go see them live. Now just hoping my copy of Shrinebuilder doesn't get lost by Royal Mail...
oooh Shrinebuilder
I just hope Scott Kelly reins in his Creed-y voice a bit.
Definitely want that Celan album too.
You'll be happy to hear that he only does that on Pyramid of the Moon
though his other vocals (more like the heavy Neurosis stuff) sit a bit oddly on the otherwise pretty mellow music on other bits of the album. I'm pretty sure it's him singing on the first bit of Blind For All To See, in an odd, almost OM style.
You'll like the Celan album, I think. It's pretty special.
