Obviously there are some types of music where the lyrics aren't important (like some types of dance music for instance), and obviously you're gonna get people who don't give a shit about lyrics and just like a hummable tune, but I'm not sure you could name me a classic song without lyrics that are either brilliantly written from a language aspect, or hold some kind of emotional meaning to people. Even trite stuff like James Blunt is popular because of the lyrics, however laughable they are to people like you and me.
So yes, the lyrics are the most important part of the song.
Then why not just read poetry, a song can be great (for me at least) if it doesn’t have any lyrics. If a song is great that has lyrics the lyrics have to be great also but there are so many great pieces of music out there (especially classical music) that are really emotional and inspiring that don’t need lyrics. Music and instruments are the most important part of music even if people prefer to listen to clichéd lyrics by musically boring.
I'm one of those people who prefer the music, in fact I can't even remember all the lyrics to some of my favourite songs. And instrumental music is awesome.
Why?'s lyrics are sometimes a bit special I guess but can also be embarassing beyond belief.
Weezy cracks me up, I was listening to him for the first time in a while today and even when he's talkin bollocks he's entertaining. Doom cracks me up and paints some insane pictures. I've not really heard Cudi but Wolf makes me cringe I can only stand a track or so every now and again of his, its all so sappy and lame. He's got some good bits though yeah.
I wana add Trim and Durrty Goodz to the pile, maybe Wiley too, when those lot are on form and have something to say they are so good. Same with Dizzee too, he's kind of watered everything down for the new stuff but when he had something to say he was one of the best around and probibly still has it in him somewhere.
he is an absolute master of conveying the most complex and emotions through his lyrics and is the voice of a lost generation. he has helped me through many a difficult time. anyone worth their salt on here should think the same. pete if you're reading I LOVE YOU, not in a sexual way though (i'm not gay), more like a best friend that you haven't met...yet :) :)
The music's horribly dull, but some of the lyrics ar cracking.
Pete Doherty hasn't written owt decent in years. If you beleive that his new material matches anything on the Babyshambles Sessions, you're living in another world.
If we're playing the 'used to be brilliant, and still make records so they count' game, Morrissey wins. Game over.
It's like saying, "What's the best film ever made?" Everyone settles in for the convo and then someone goes "The Godfather" and everyone else is like: Well, that was a fun five second discussion.
Although, I do second the vote for Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy.
Lou Reed/John Cale - I can't choose but one!
Morrissey, Luke Haines, Neil Tennant, Neil Hannon and Momus have all been around ages and all lost their musical edge but still beat all of the current crop sadly.
He's a master of saying a lot with very few words. Songs like Cryptograms and Agoraphobia convey complex psychological states with very minimal language.
Uh...
Here come the Men in Black
It's the M.I.B.'s, uhh, here come the M.I.B.'s
Here come the Men in Black
They won't let you remember
Nah nah nah
The good guys dress in black remember that
Just in case we ever face to face and make contact
The title held by me - M.I.B.
Means what you think you saw, you did not see
So don't blink be what was there
Is now gone, black suit with the black Ray Ban's on
Walk in shadow, move in silence
Guard against extra-terrestrial violence
But yo we ain't on no government list
We straight don't exist, no names and no figerprints
Saw somethin strange, watch your back
Cause you never quite know where the M.I.B.'s is at
Uh and...
Here come the Men in Black (Men in Blaaaaack)
Galaxy defenders (oahhaooohh ohhhhh)
Here come the Men in Black (Men in Blaaaaack)
They won't let you remember
Uh uh, uh uh, now
From the deepest of the darkest of night
On the horizon, bright light enters sight tight
Cameras zoom, on the impending doom
But then like BOOM black suits fill the room up
With the quickness talk with the witnesses
Hypnotizer, neuralizer
Vivid memories turn to fantasies
Ain't no M.I.B.'s, can I please
Do what we say that's the way we kick it
Yaknahmean? I see my noisy cricket get wicked on ya
We're your first, last and only line of defense
Against the worst scum of the universe
So don't fear us, cheer us
If you ever get near us, don't jeer us, we're the fearless
M.I.B.'s, freezin up all the flack
(What's that stand for?) Men In Black
Uhh M
The Men in Black...
The Men in Black
Let me see ya just bounce it with me, just bounce with me
Just bounce it with me c'mon
Let me see ya just slide with me, just slide with me
Just slide with me c'mon
Let me see ya take a walk with me, just walk it with me
Take a walk with me c'mon
And make your neck work
Now freeze...
Here come the Men in Black (Men in Blaaaaack)
The galaxy defenders
Right on, right on
Here come the Men in Black (Men in Blaaaaack)
They won't let you rememberk (ohhhh nooooo)
Alright check it, let me tell you this in closin
I know we might seem imposin
But trust me if we ever show in your section
Believe me, it's for your own protection
Cause we see things that you need not see
And we be places that you need not be
So go witcha life, forget that Roswell crap
Show love to the black suit, cause that's the Men in
That's the Men in...
Here come the Men in Black (here they comeeeee)
The galaxy defenders (ga-la-xy de-fenders)
Here come the Men in Black (ohhhh here they come)

Here come the Men in Black (ohhhh here they come)
Galaxy defenders (ohh ohh, ohh ohh, ohh ohh)
Here come the Men in Black
They won't let you remember

Still: John Darnielle, Yoni Wolf, Stephin Merritt, Gareth Campesinos!, Will Sheff, Matt Beringer, Jeffrey Lewis, Nick Cave and the man Wikipedia calls "Andy "Falco" Falkous". Oh and Busdriver and Slug from Atmosphere.

Or, does anyone really listen to lyrics anymore?
How important to a song do you feel they are?
without lyrics you don't have a song, you just have music
You know what I mean, sport.
sorry i was inferring that of course they are important
Obviously there are some types of music where the lyrics aren't important (like some types of dance music for instance), and obviously you're gonna get people who don't give a shit about lyrics and just like a hummable tune, but I'm not sure you could name me a classic song without lyrics that are either brilliantly written from a language aspect, or hold some kind of emotional meaning to people. Scatman John suggests otherwise
Scatman John is dead
scatman, fat man, black and white or brown man
tell me about the colour of your soul.
Scatman gets my lyrical vote.
Fatman Scoop?
BROOKLYN CLAN

Unfuckwitable.
Andy Broder

Also, two of the most overlooked musicians of our age.

I've always thought that Toby Haye's comes up with some totally inspired lines.
He had best be on form on the new record!
:(
So many replies and no mention of Guy Garvey.
No idea
I'm one of those people who prefer the music, in fact I can't even remember all the lyrics to some of my favourite songs. And instrumental music is awesome.

Will Sheff
I'd probably say Kevin Barnes
though at times he's a bit pretentious. Still I reckon that it all depends on how much you can relate to what the lyricist is talking about.
will sheff
nick cave
and dave berman (am pretending he is still around!)
Guy Garvey, Nick Cave, Isaac Brock, Craig Finn.
Petah doherty

Guy Garvey's actually quite a good call...
The music's horribly dull, but some of the lyrics ar cracking.

Matt Beringer
Jeff Tweedy
Will Oldham
Stuart Murdoch

Yoni Wolf
Clearly.
First shout for Hayden Thorpe of Wild Beasts
The audacity of some of his lyrics is fantastic!
Agree with the above too; Yoni Wolf really sticks out, especially the lyrics on 'Gemini'.
Tim Smith
of Cardiacs
HOW IS THIS EVEN A DEBATE?
Bob Dylan you absolute morons.
He is the best lyricist of all time.
Let's set him aside though.
It's like saying, "What's the best film ever made?" Everyone settles in for the convo and then someone goes "The Godfather" and everyone else is like: Well, that was a fun five second discussion.
So yeah, apart from Dylan...
Has to be The Gift of Gab!!

Bradford Cox.
