Broken-up bands (with all members living) who will never reform
Now that Pavement have un-bit the dust, is there anyone we're pretty sure will stay split up? I mean, it's going to be cool to see Pavement and all, but I miss the romance of thinking I'll never actually see a band even though they could if they wanted.
I reckon:
Talking Heads (sounds like there's a lot of bitterness there still)
ABBA (admirably holding their ground there)
The Smiths (surely if they were going to they would have by now?
Any others?

Another Level
The Kinks :(
with the Davies brothers that is
The Stone Roses
No-one in Husker Du is dead, are they?
Husker Du reunion is pretty likely as they go
None of them hate each other. They all split kinda amicably because Hart thought he had HIV and was a bit addicted to heroin....turned out he wasn't and he's now clean...
well, they hated each other at the time
but they seem cool now. i'd be surprised if there isn't a reunion. hell, if dino jr managed it...
i think morrissey has said in interviews that there is no amount of money
he could be offered to reform the smiths.
i cant think of any good responses sorry.
I was thinking of The Smiths
as soon as I saw the topic title. So them.
I think we're all hoping
Oasis.
Pulp
Not officially split, but I can't see how they would be relevant today.
I dunno
I think it could happen at some point. I personally rather liked the direction they moved in with 'We Love Life'... I think the musical charisma that last line-up had could have the potential to produce a more interesting/inspiring backing than Jarvis is necessarily capable of by himself (don't get me wrong, I like Jarvis' solo stuff, but it's just not the same).
Even though people keep going on abouth them I can't see At the Drive In or Neutral Milk Hotel happening as much as it dissapoints me to say it. Saying that you never know these days so I'm still keeping my fingers crossed.
How many of the orginal Velvet Underground are still alive? People would go batshit mental for that but I think I'm right in saying Cale and Reed aren't exactly best buddies right?
The original guitarist...
... Sterling Morrison passed away in 1995. And yeah, Reed and Cale don't really get along - although they did reform for a tour in 1992. But no more Morrison = no more VU reunions. Probably a good thing. I hate reunions.
At The Drive In
were talking about reuniting only a couple of months ago... Apparently all is harmonious again between Ward and the Volta duo...and that came straight from Rodriguez's mouth.
Yeah I read that,
but Ward then turned around and said that it's unlikely as he wants to focus on the stuff he's doing now and not go backwards or something along those lines...
Talk Talk
Which is a shame, as I'd love to hear some of their last two albums played live (and not just by Shearwater, bless 'em).
Neutral Milk Hotel.
As for The Smiths,I believe Morrissey said he would rather eat his own testicles.
Right
"I would rather eat my own testicles than reform the Smiths, and that's saying something for a vegetarian."
million dead
pedro the lion
minor threat
black flag (with rollins i guess)
big black
Didn't Big Black reform for the Touch & Go anniversary a couple of years ago?
Black Flag was always just Greg Ginn and whoever he felt like playing with
I think he's way past doing that kinda stuff now and given his reputation as a cantankerous type I can't imagine him being one for any sort of 'Flag reformation, and if it did happen it would be pretty shit - there wasn't really one 'definitive' 'Flag lineup, in my mind at least. He now writes dirty great stoner metal tracks. Some of them are ok.
although I've just remembered he did a benefit show as Black Flag
All proceeds went to cat rescue organisations. He owns 30 rescued cats, apparently.
yeah
they did 3 shows i think. all the bass was done on backing tracks. sounds horrible.
plus, who needs Black Flag when the latest raping of the Misfits name plays their songs?!?!?
yeah but i can't see them reforming ever with rollins on vocals
that's my point really.
and i forgot about big black.
definitely minor threat though.
i'd eat my hat
if Fugazi ever reformed, unless it was for a one off special charity or benefit show or conversely that they had written an album's worth of new material together that stood up to everything else they had done and they did a full world tour to promote it. I think it's pretty unlikely this will even happen though. Can't believe it's 8 years since The Argument was released. Seems like yesterday I rushed out to Virgin Megastore in Sutton to buy it as an eager 17 year old.
*ever, not 'even'
did Fugazi not go on 'hiatus'?
or am i making that up?
they hiatus'ed for family reasons
MacKaye seems pretty happy with the evens and Guy's been mixing records, so they're still working but I doubt they'd ever come back, even for a one off benefit, theres just not enough fans in any one place to make it worthwhile
what are you talking about??
if Fugazi did a one off 'reunion' (not strictly a reunion if they are on hiatus) it would sell out for sure. Especially in a couple of years time.
yeh but they wouldnt do a benefit tour
one off gig in DC, maybe. maaaybe.
Joe Lally is touring the UK..

No signs of any activity on the Fugazi front, I don't think a tour or new album is likely only mayne a benefit gig maybe but nothing major.
mayne?
New Order?
Seems the Sumner-Hook falling out is a major one.
I was gonna suggest New Order
plus The Jam will never reform (with Weller in it that is). Same goes for the Dead Kennedys with Jello.
Unfortunately doesn't prevent non-Jello peoples from masquerading as DK.
A sad state of affairs.
Cocteau Twins
sadly.
mclusky. Falco doesn't seem the type to let a grudge slip.
but future of the left are better so
it's no biggie
Husker Du
Will never reform. They didn't split amicably and Bob and Grant have been bitching about each other for years. I'd also venture that Grant Hart has too much artistic integrity to put the band back together just to cash-in on the ATP circuit.
ah, my bad
I'm just reading now and I was pretty wrong on that one.
Weird, I swear they never used to hate each other....
saying that
they did play a last minute set together at a benefit a few years ago, so the blood can't be that bad these days.
quote
"it was two musicians playing the same music on the same stage, but we weren't playing together" - Grant on them both playing at the benefit for Karl Mueller.
how pathetic
Was there not a Morrissey quote along the lines of
"the only way you will get the four of us back in a room together is if you drag our corpses there"
or have I made that up?
morrissey is too busy being a solo douche and marr is too busy ruining other bands
Hot Snakes
I think because Reis and Froberg don't get on. :(
Do they not?
That's weird, I thought they were best buds forever and Hot Snakes finished because they'd made three amazing but fairly similar records and felt there wasn't an awful lot left for them to do.
I think RFTC are done as well, I can't ever see them deciding to go back to that.
Perhaps they still are!
I hope I'm wrong and it was for the reason you said! - "3 cracking albums and we're finished."
I was going to suggest them and Rocket from the Crypt,
just because Speedo doesn't seem the sort drag an old band out of the cupboard. He'd be more likely to form a new band with members of the old ones (Rick in Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes; Gar in Hot Snakes and Night Marchers; err...that's it, I think).
It'd be pretty sweet if RFTC got back together, even if just for a greatest hits type tour, but that would dick on their big Hallowe'en farewell show that they did that I wish I'd been at. :'(
*Mario Rubalcaba in RFTC (on the last two albums anyway) and Sultans
The old Hot Snakes drummer (Jason K) is in Night Marchers as well!
I would love RFTC to get back together just so I could see them live, but like you say, doesn't seem Speedo's style and it would make that Halloween show seem less fucking awesome. I think it's such a shame that they called it a day when they did; I think they just lost their spark after Atom left (although Ruby Mars is an awesome AWESOME drummer). I think the saxophonist is a maths teacher now. \m/
I guess you could argue
Public Image Ltd to a degree, as there's no way on earth Lydon, Levene and Wobble will ever work together again.
Sadly I fear Au Pairs
Also, I suspect DFA1979.
I'd love to see these two things rehappening. A lot.
The Smiths & Stone Roses
are both fair calls, I reckon.
Both have lead singers who have their solo thing going on, who seemingly have a strong notion of "the past's the past", and seem sufficiently stubborn enough to hold grudges.
And in both cases, former bandmates have their own thing going on. Marr seems happy doing the muso-for-hire thing, and Squire seems to be more into his art these days.
Symposium
:(
I'm still holding out for this
I'd make do with Hell is for Heroes
giving it another go...
Mansun
after Stove (allegedly) nicked a load of the band's money.
Slowdive
i think Neutral Milk Hotel will do some more shows, nothing big but something low-ki in Athens or the like.
i could see ATDI doing a show at some point too.
Also Pale Saints
Boo Radleys, The Telescopes (as in the 'Taste' and 'Telescopes' line-up) and Crass.
great point on pale saints
telescopes is obviously touchy water.
fuck knows about crass
a Pale Saints reunion would be fab
Side question: am I alone in actually liking the third album?
Kenickie...
Soundgarden
Can't see Kim and/or Ben ever being up for it.
They did a set with the Tad bloke this year
It's Cornell who won't get back in the fold. More shame on him, as his solo albums have been mostly shit.
By the way, someone I'm willing to trust on the matter told me NMH reformation is on the cards for next year.
Also next year... 9/1 The Jam
Royal Trux
think that was one messy break-up...! ditto Pussy Galore, who hated each other for most of their existence anyway...!
It seems like one of the most stupid things to applaud a band that reforms while all of them are all alive and well. Yay! You're all in the same place again, holding guitars again, wow! What an effort that is on your part! Yay! Some reunions are great, like Scarce as they definitely had unfinished business/unrealised potential (oog they're playing london soon), but some just seem unnecessary like Dinosaur Jr I'm sorry to say, I don't see the point, and Lou's a fucking awful bass player.
Refused
This makes me a sad panda.
smaller bands
Like Hope of the States, cranebuilders Broken Family band e.t.c, mainly cos theres no market for it i guess.
Faces reunion seems off. And Specials with Neville Staple, who apparently is a twat anyway.
If Midget, Drugstore and Marion are back
there's still chances for Hope of the States, cranebuilders or Broken Family Band...
Broken Family Band haven't even split yet, give them a chance
Specials with Neville Staple? I assume you mean Dammers. There were heavy rumours of a Faces reunion a couple of years ago, actually, round about when the Cream reactivation made anything seem possible.
doh
yes, dammers. brain freeze...
Well, technically not all of Hope of the States are living...
But I see what you mean. I'd love to see 'em give it another go, Left was better than people made out, and I think they had plenty in them.
Gobblehoof
Cable won't ever reform.
they were gonna reform to spport a hundred reasons at brixton a few years back
cant remember why it fell through, I pm'd the singer on dis once (he popped up at the end of a cable thread and no one noticed) think he said they are all living all over the place so it would have to be something large scale like a tour to make it worth while, but think they all get one, sadly cant ever see there being a demand, hopefully atp will ask them one day (though they dont seem to care for british bands)
i vaguely remember hundred reasons saying
that sony were worried that cable re-forming might over shadow the hundred reasons tour/gig, so kind of nipped it in the bud. not 100% sure.
one of them lives in sweden i think. that would get in the way.
I don't think Guided By Voices will ever reform.
I think Pollard has said that he would do it if the money was right but I think for the money to be right ATP (who else?) would want it to be the "classic line-up". I can't see Mitch Mitchell doing it. I'm not even sure if he is alive anymore.
Guided by voices are very likely to reform
Steven Soderberg's doing a musical 'Cleopatra' using GBV songs.
I'd be amazed if they don't do something off the back of that.
do you mean Kevin Fennell?
Mitch Mitchell is currently doing this :
http://www.myspace.com/mitchmitchellsterrifyingexperience
I did know about Terrifying Experience...
but I see to remember some rumour on Disarm The Settlers saying that he wasn't in good health. There is a strong chance I just made this all up in a dream though. I know Kevin Fennell is still about and I reckon he played drums for GBV on one of their last few dates.
I still can't see them reforming. Certainly not the Bee Thousand era lineup. Not that is a bad thing as I think Doug Gillard was one of the best things to happen to GBV.
tempted to say Meet Me In St Louis
but I don't want to jinx it since I keep hoping that they will reform.
botch
they've said they'll never reform. which is a shame as i never saw them.
cap'n jazz as well. at the drive-in, though that's already been said.
The Unicorns :(
Charlottefield
I hope they do, but I can't imagine they ever would :(
Beta Band :-(
Probably for legal reasons, as much as anything else???
