Stoner Rock
Is there a better exponent of this genre than Kyuss?
I love the whole downtuned guitar thing. What else should I check out? Slow, heavy riffs make me happy.

Kyuss are my favourite
but electric wizard are pretty great
Oh cool
I'll definitely check them out. One track on spotify. Apparently they were formed in darkest Dorset. I'm from darkest Dorset. That makes me like them straight away.
As you're here, what's your favourite kyuss?
Fu Manchu
Baroness (some of their stuff is very stoner rock, quite slow 'n groovy)
Oh yeah, the two fu manchu CDs I've got are superb
(In Search of... and California Crossing)
The Falcon Has Landed and Seahag, oh my. What a one-two that is.
I'll check out Baroness. Nice one shuckster.
I fucking love California Crossing.
"THE WASTEOID" *huge crunching riff* \m/
Get 'The Action is Go' as well - got some cracking tunes on it, such as this beauty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ge1-15fmEDM&feature=related I want to marry that opening guitar bit.
No probs - try and find The Red Album by Baroness, tis good shit. Think they released some EPs before that, not sure what they're like though.
I can see why
Mighty riff
Cheers
King Of The Road
is Fu Manchu's best album in my opinion. You can't go wrong with 'California Crossing' and 'The Action Is Go' though - dumb, fun stoner rock at its best. They got a bit more serious on 'Start The Machine' and 'We Must Obey', but they're still great albums.
Sleep
Goatsnake
Monster Magnet
Nebula (couple of the guys from Fu Manchu formed this band)
Corrosion of Conformity
I've listened to Monster Magnet a couple times
found them a bit, I dunno, 'thin' I suppose.
early space-rock monster magnet is amazing psyche/stoner
but then ... WHAM they turned into some sort of giant leather bound sex rock band
which was good in it's own way but not stoner in the slightest
<3
heavier stuff:
electric wizard
yob
weedeater
sleep
bluesy kyussy stuff:
unida
acid king
suplecs
and yknow if you don't listen to sabbath you really, really should
Unida are ace. I love that closing track
I know Sleep but I'll check the other stuff. Someone put Yob on the last.fm playlist last week. Nice.
john garcia is a beast
that yob wus probably me, their new one is fucking huge; up there with come my fanatics & holy mountain as my favourite stoner rekkids ever. if you like sleep try high on fire (matt pike's next band) they're more motorhead than sabbath but are like the best rock band in the world at the mo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWRplORLPmg
This is good John Garcia almost-Kyuss
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBybHQl6Ht0
Song cuts out early but you get the idea!
Don't for Slo Burn...
The best out of John Garcia's bands in my opinion!
awesome recommendations so far
more recently I'd suggest, Kowloon Walled City, their EP was possible one of my favourites from last year and the new album should be amazing
Otherwise
I'd suggest
Mainliner(Japanese heavy psychedlia featuring Asahito Nanjo who's been in loads of awesome bands)
Bardo Pond(maybe less stoner than psych but still full of lovely reverbed guitar and white noise washouts if you like them you might also like one of their side projects called Alsehir)
The Grasshopper Lies Heavy(traverse stoner, post metal and drone on the Gun EP)
Taint(surprisingly melodic but with plenty of sludgy goodness and post ac/dc guitar work in a similar vein to Torche)
I'm listening to the Kowloon Walled City EP (Turk St) right now
It's really fucking good. The vocals are a bit angry for my taste but hey.
I know Bardo Pond. Their cover of Cry Baby, Cry is possibly my favourite cover ever.
I'll check out Taint for definite as I love Meanderthal.
Nice one ...and young
Cheers
For Torche-y stuff
try Baroness! The Red Album is amazing.
Kowloon Walled City have a new album coming out in a month or two
as do Baroness. I'm really looking forward to both.
Pretty much everything mentioned here is awesome and worth checking out. Although I'm amazed nobody's mentioned Boris yet - Heavy Rocks is one of my favourite Stoner albums, and Pink and Smile are both great albums in a similar vein. I'd also recommend Eagle Twin, with their album 'The Unkindness Of Crows'. Really great sludge, but bluesy in a sort of early Nick Cave sort of way (like the Birthday Party's slow songs).
And if you want something really odd, that merges out-there Animal Collective style psychedelica with huge down-tuned riffs, check out Wildildlifes album 'Six'
Plus,
if you like Baroness, check out Minsk's new album, 'With Echoes In The Movement Of Stone'. It's kind of like a slower, heavier version of Baroness, with a bit more post-metal in there, but still has the hooks and the crushing riffs.
You also need everything Melvins. Start with Stoner Witch, as LBC recommends, get Houdini and Stag too though.
I checked out Eagle Twin the other day
I really enjoyed it. Get what you mean about the Nick Cave thing, they've got a really sludgey and sorta outback bluesy sound going on. Not so far removed from the dustblown sounds of Earth and the whole arizona music scene.
And big love for Pink by Boris. Nothing else they've done comes close to the majesty of that album.
Six also comes highly recommended. I did a thread on them a month or two ago.
The Melvins - At The Stake
from the Stoner Witch album is 8 minutes of rumbling, sludgey goodness.
Infact, get the whole album (if you haven't already)
yes
Here is an awesome slow Melvins Sabbath cover too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m0QcEv2xwU
fuck me!
Nice one 3mugs. Absolutely amazing.
Isis.
Get Oceanic, it's the best one.
I personally wouldn't put Isis anywhere near the stoner rock genre...
Whatever.
Who the fuck cares, really?
Wouldn't anyone who likes "stoner rock" whatever the fuck that actually is, also like Isis? When it comes to heavy music, people get way too into this genre bullshit, and that's what it is: bullshit. Is Isis really that removed from stuff like Kyuss, Sleep et.al.?
all great suggestions
OM is also good. Pilgrimage especially, the new one is less monolithic sounding.
Stoner Witch by Melvins comes highly recommended, obviously.
Brant Bjork from Kyuss has released under a variety of guises - some of his stuff is pretty good but mostly it's really hard to find (and when you do it's expensive!). There's an album he did with Fu Manchu I think. It's good, there's a song on it called The Low Desert Punk.
And speaking of Kyuss - the first QOTSA album is pretty heavy. And Rated R tbh.
Otherwise, maybe try some of the more pysch stuff - Comets on Fire, Residual Echoes, Magic Lantern, Sun Araw....
I've got a couple of BB & The Operators CDs
Some damn good tracks on those
Think I'll get Stoner Witch. Seeing them in Dec. Bring it.
Cheers
Speaking of Brant
His first post Kyuss band, Che, are really good. They only have one record out and it's a bastard to get hold of but it's a gem.
Of his solo stuff I'd say Jalamanta is the essential purchase.
And I haven't seen Solace or Sixty Watt Shamen mentioned in this thread. Both of which I can't recommend highly enough.
stoner-rock.com
is a good place to get your head filled with Stoner knowledge and the underground. Basically the majority of bands on TeePee, I Used To Fuck People Like You In Prison, Mans Ruin (RIP!), Sour Stone...etc.
There are literally 1000's of bands in this genre and i woud say 99% hate the term 'Stoner Rock' as it appears to associate lazy minded people and the 'slacker' generation.
A Few years back I did a peice on 'STONER ROCK' for the record collector pricing several rare Dessert Session / Kyuss records etc, which have really gone down in value sad to say. But will always be highly valued to me.
Right now I would say bands like:
Dead Meadow
Black Mountain
Torche
Oneida
Gomer Pyle
Hermano
Blood Ceremony
Witchcaft
Church of Misery
Nebula (have a new album out + Peel sessions)
35007 (perhaps the most underated instrumental band ever...fuck Isis!)
Part Chimp
Comets on Fire / Six Organs
send me a message if you want a superior label and band list or just go to stoner-rock.com and you'll get all your Acid Kings there.
Cheers
Nebula sounds promising. I'm a sucker for a Peel Session.
Downer about the value thing. How come? Mredit Mrunch?
I've got the 1st qotsa on CD on Roadrunner which I heard was quite valuable. Also the Kyuss/qotsa split.
I saw Nebula years back at Reading
They rocked my face off! :D
To add to that list I'd say ( note this is a list of stoner rock and doom metal which are different things ):
Spirit Caravan
Hidden Hand
St Vitus
Karma to burn
Burning witch
Trouble
Cathedral
Don't forget Rise above records. It's one of the most important record labels in the genre. Lovely chaps!
First QOTSA album is great. It's a 100 times better than anything else they have released in my opinion!
Man's Ruin closing shop lost so much amazing music
i've been listening to the jex thoth record quite a bit of late
got it on now, in fact. it's really great stuff - imagine jefferson airplane and sabbath jamming on the cliff top while edward woodward burns in the wicker man and tumbles over the edge into the sea. james 'wooden wand' toth and clay 'burial hex' ruby play on it and there's a bobb trimble cover thrown in too.
the album is on youtube!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzOLCBB2v2A
The "Totem" EP is also on youtube
by the very same band. And it is awesomely good. Keith Wood plays guitar on that one too but it sounds nowt like Hush Arbors.
have you heard that zodiacs record?
it's keith wood, clay ruby and wooden wand going off on a bit of a scuzzy biker noize jam. it's not as good as it should be.
on the more aggressive side
there's also stuff like EyeHateGod and Iron Monkey, both of whom have new-ish reissues out. Iron Monkey covering Cornucopia is crushing.
Also, surprised no-one's mentioned Big Business yet, who in their spare time are the Melvins' latest rythm section.
I am randomly 'thising' posts
everything's been said really
Alabama Thunderpussy
Fu Manchu
The Sword
Valis
Kyuss
Orange Goblin
Electric Wizard
Novasmoke (look through myspace, mates band that split up but awesome none the less)
Down
you guys may appreciate my band...
by definition - http://www.myspace.com/bydefinition.
Stoner Metal ala Clutch, Down etc.
Also check out Spiritual Beggars.
I heard a band called Flood last night who made me sit up and listen
http://www.myspace.com/floodingwater
Baroness. Oh my!
Been listening to Red album pretty much solidly for a week now.
Is Blue album out yet?
Oct 12th
According to Amazon. They also have the Shrinebuilder album down as coming out on the same day. I'm greatly looking forward to next monday.
I resent the term stoner rock
Drone and psychadelica makes far better listening when baked. Plus it gives off the impression that all stoners have long greasy hair and live in 1983
Yeah, I don't think many people like it
Kind of stuck with it now
Psychadelic drone should be called stone-groove
do The Warlocks count?
Earthless
they were damn good at Supersonic
^this
They were awesome at supersonic, I couldn't get under the cover on the outside stage so I had to stand near the barriers on the edges and get soaked but it was totally worth it.
The new album from Saviours is fucking immense.
Accelerated Living, out later this month. In my Top Ten Albums of '09 easy.
So many bands...
Check out Jecano and Firebird as well!
Atomic Bitchwax?
Bongzilla
HARVEY MILK!!!
life... the best game in town!!!
SALOME
Check the Fugazi cover. So, so good..
http://www.myspace.com/salomedoom
Been mentioned...
...I know but definately Holy Mountain by Sleep.
They were incredible live.
