Don't think i was quite expecting that but a rightly deserved mark for a brilliant album.
I'm always a little leary of 8s and 9s attributed to UK acts. I took a flyer here anyway...and DiS was right, and now PF is also right: this album is stellar.
I'm going to have to listen again to hear the R'nB influences, cos I thought DiSer who said "Interpol meets the Knife" was spot on. And like PF dude said, really hard to believe this is a debut album. It's such a mature album. Hopefully the Mercury people have this one tucked away for next year's competition.
but you are being a bit of a nitpicky bastard.
I didn't mean to actually hit reply then.
it's pretty boring. I think all Brits are grasping for straws when it comes to looking for their "voice" in the indie world. leave it up to a bunch of 20 year old bumblefucks to make a shit album and acquire gratuitous praise
this is not original, nor is it lasting
it's really tantamount to the hype that built up fleet foxes, vampire weekend, the antlers, etc.
aren't you guys anti-pitchfork? They fucking suck too
there's not much going on, and i don't mean that in some lunkheaded-doesn't-get-its-supposed-to-be-minimal kind of way, its just the elements that ARE there aren't really that powerful
but I absolutely adore it! def in my top 3 of the year. Better with each listen.
definitely one of the best records of the year.
i'm sad they've become popular so quickly. sounds childish but, while i don't think they deserve all the hype in their corner, they REALLY don't deserve the attendant (and inevitable) backlash, and i can see it from here. they're a lovely little group with a lovely little record though, and it's certainly a breath of fresh air compared to the crap i'm used to seeing blown up by british music press. (that includes you DiS sry still love ya)
it's not really doing it for me, either. I mean it's fine, but not brilliant.
Someone up there described it as "mature" and I think that explains why this album isn't setting my world on fire: "mature" in my book has always been used to describe stuff that I find to be MOR rock, i.e. lacking any edges, any catchy/innovative bits, and/or any rawness.
it's got moments on the album but not sure why people are wetting themselves over this as it's quite alright but not world class.
when pitchfork give the phantom band a 7.3 and The xx 8.7 gets on my tits a bit
so that gets on your nerves because they marked one a little higher?
the xx is a seven out of ten at best its boring in parts you need to be in a certain frame of mind to enjoy it
Not good enough to warrant the hype it's getting. Hardly innovative is it?
RnB influence, all that bollocks. I really don't hear it tbh.
that has been as sparse (even lightweight, in a non-pejorative sense) as this.
But, yeah, I don't see the RnB resonance.
The bass on a couple of tracks and some of the vocal deliveries. But its pretty much an indie album.
I'm a sucker for chiming reverb drenched guitars, male/female vocal interplay and minimilistic deliveries. This has loads of the above and it makes it a special record for me.
I like all the things you've listed, but something seems missing from this album.
Maybe it's too minimalist for my liking?
As the pitchfork review says, there is very few big signature tunes or anthems. Theres a lot of tension in there, and moments where you think it will build into something but it just falls away. I understand people find this frustating, but I find it one of the best qualities.
I am really liking this record. Took me a few listens to get into it, but once I did it was great. Probably only 2 songs I don't like. I haven't heard anything like it.
Its pretty damn good, it reminds me of DJ Shadow's The Private Press for soem reason a super stripped back indie version of course... Some days I bloody love the album and others I find it just a bit dull. I'm still addicted to Crystalised and Basic Space is up there too now.
It's pretty good, even if one track sounds exactly like Wicked Game.
But I personally think thats a positive thing.
I bloody love Wicked Game
Its bloody brilliant.
I'll have a mooch around for it cheers
after reading the pitchfork review. I'm really liking it, reminds me a little of junior boys and there is some dubstep influence as well. I love sad minimalist music and can't wait to see them live in a few weeks.
i'm normally a bit weary of a really great review, but this is really good! just listening on spotify now...
really into Heart Skipped a Beat and Night Time
so far it just sounds like pretty cheesy lyrics over pretty cheesy backing tracks. everyone seems to be saying 'it's a grower, grover' so i'm going to have to try again with headphones or something...
Im seriously not impressed with this band, i dont mind them but they arent doing anything for me... maybe its because theyre the same age as me and maybe subconciously that loses a bit of admiration
This band is only hyped up because Brit music has nothing going on these days
it's time to get away from popular music, folks. Perpetual deja vu seems to be fine for most people. not me
I want fucking aliens to come down and show us another form of entertainment
I want a different kind of order
and yes, I'm a fucking cunt
at least I have a brain
I get nauseated seeing weird crooked Brit teeth
Nothing more nothing less.
is a complete rip off of Glasvegas - Geraldine. Apart from a few tracks dunno what the fuss is about...
Yes it does have parts of it which sound very similar indeed, but that doesn't make it s "complete rip off". By that assessment, most music is a complete rip off - which of course it is.
possibly because it's rare that I encounter so much empty space on a record, and whilst it might not be entirely original I haven't heard any other records that sound like it in 2009.
The xx - Basic Space (Mount Kimbie Remix)
They have been in The xx's top friends on myspace for a while.
is shit hot too
particulary like the Pariah remix. Also the Jamie xx remix is worth checking out. I'm excited about this band. They've made a great late night album. They are all really young, be interesting to see how they develop as a band.
mad decent put that up on their blog a while ago nice subtle mix. I like to listen to this durring the day feels good chillin with the sun shinning I can dig out some really dark stuff for the evenings.
that's never been done before..
Prinzhorn Dance School
or the Fall before them? It's all the same, a bunch of dumb Brits proud of their accents as well as their musical limitations.
The music scene here in America laughs at yours. We've created everything that's been remotely decent in the last decade. Maybe all of that inbreeding has finally caught up in your great island.
I bet if this site were existent during the post-grunge haze, you'd be lauding Bush. "they're so fresh and new."
suck on it, you predictable creatures.
I'm really not arsed if you dont like it and I do like but I just want ot point out that Bush were that band that got huge in the US in the post grunge days and pretty much ignored over here dispite being from here arn't they? And Prinzhorn Dance School hahah
I was pleasantly surprised, I'm normally left cold by DiS/P4K hyped bands but this seems rather good, I hope it grows on my as much as that review claims it will.
