i vote Kicking a Dead Pig (Mogwai) and Mixed Up (the Cure)
but not the remix of Pictures or You, which I utterly loath. Ironically, though, that was the remix that kicked off the Mixed Up project to begin with.
parts of -ish -maybe
-sorta fits the bill
-also sorta fits the bill (as does Jaydiohead: The Encore)
the source material, imo
but here's an aside: remixes of album covers - as books.
And seeing as I've linked to that, here's the Wu-Note Project. Wu albums redone as Blue Note style sleeves.
I bought Fixed (remix of Broken) back in the day (a little after Downward Spiral) and it put me off NIN for nearly a decade.
sound of trent reznor disappearing up his own rectum
both versions of further down the spiral by NIN are great although they're horrifying to actually listen to.
especially the aphex twin "construction".
Yeah, me neither
but I can't take you seriously.
The second disc of Pyramids's album certainly fits the bill.
Low's Tonight the Monkeys Die is pretty great, though that's only an EP. owL, on the other hand, is awfuL.
others from JSBX:
Acme Plus(UK)/Xtra Acme(US)
just for Underworlds mix of 'Cool Kids of Death' alone..
and yes I know they're not a guitar band..
And casino classics must be the remix album that sounds the least like the original tracks ever ever ever.
The Paradise Motel remix album album that came with some copies of the Flight Paths album is fantastic. Includes Mogwai remixing them amongst others.
That's a name I would never have expected to see around these parts. I'd always assumed their name was never mentioned outside a few independent record stores in Aust. In fact, they seemed to disappear after Still Life, and I never knew they'd released a second album.
Funny how different things are with pre-net bands (well they were close enough to pre-net when I knew them), how it was so much harder to track down info on the more marginal acts...
Saw Paradise Motel at Reading in 1999... ten years ago this weekend! Bloody hell.
and the album, Still Life.
How does Flight Paths compare to those?
I've never really heard a remix album that has made me really sit up. Kicking A Dead Pig and the Earth one (Legacy of Dissolution? or something) are both really good, but I see them more as a complement to the original stuff. No remix album has ever really stood up on it's own, in my opinion.
Longview - far better than the original in my opinion.
Explosions In The Sky - the second cd that came with copies of their last album.
Both of these are excellent.
The cd that came with the special addition is very good indeed and they're releasing it propper at some point with added extras.
when I listened to the 30 second clips on iTunes all I could hear were wind noises.
its not the most guitary sounding album around but they do indeed use guitars thruoghout.
is alreet. Its all over the internet if you want it.
franz ferdinand- blood.
the global communications remix of chapterhouse's blood music is a good one too.
Also the remixes on the Rings around the World DVD are pretty good examples of the format.
