Interpol vs Pavement
Lines in the sand please. Two Matador behemoths of the past twenty years.
As someone whose teeth were cut in mid-Noughties 'indie', I fall strongly into the Interpol camp. Getting Turn On The Bright Lights at the end of a Biology class off a friend (who borrowed it from his older sister) when I was 14 - off the back of hearing Evil - was probably the best thing any of my peers have ever done for me. Still to this day nothing gets close. I know they've dropped off slightly by album but I still rep them, song-for-song, as one of the best bands ever.
I have been getting into Pavement more as of late, but the 'click' has yet to fully occur and I'm starting to think it was a mid-90s thing that might never arrive for me?

Interpol
Pavement
Nah
It's an amazing thing which should at some stage arrive for everyone.
In fact
Pavement are probably the most influential indie band of the 90s, so while their sound is very identifiably of that decade, there are also so many bands still incorporating a huge part of what Pavement did into what they do, I don't think it's possible to fail to feel a connection with Pavement if you have even the remotest interest in what has followed them.
Pavement are DEFINITELY not the most influential band of the 90s.
Nowhere near big enough, no way. Oasis, Nirvana, Blur, heck even Rage Against The Machine had way more influence.
as well as, of course, Take That + The Spice Girls etc
um, he did say "indie"
...
i think it's fair to say that no band has ever been more indie than pavement. which is a dubious compliment if ever i've heard one.
ah yeah
still, Oasis + Blur + Nirvana could all be classed as indie and are hugely influential. Of course, the definition of indie is up in the air.
true
the definition of schmindie, on the other hand, is not. pavement are without doubt the best and most influential schmindie band of the 90s.
Nirvana haven't been influential
You get the odd band which tries to start a grunge revival, for the most part, grunge died the day Nirvana did. You can make a case for post-grunge, but I don't really see what Nickelback and Creed have to do with indie music. Which, reading back what I said, isn't actually relevant... In terms of indie music, Pavement were the single most influential band of the 90s.
To clarify, Nirvana have had a massive influence on "modern rock"
but in terms of indie rock, their influence has been minimal.
In fact, I say that about Nirvana
but they probably influenced radio stations and tastemakers more than they influenced the bands themselves.
I wouldn't be so sure
a number of contemporary bands show heavy influence of Nirvana in their music: Dinosaur Pile-Up, Lovvers, Pulled Apart By Horses are but three that immediately came to mind
Yeah, but it comes and goes
whereas Pavement-influenced bands are here ALL the time. It's like there's a constant flow. I'll put it another way - if there'd been no Pavement, Pitchfork probably wouldn't exist as we know it now.
What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you know nothing?
DINOSAUR JR INFLUENCED NIRVANA
NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND
GET IT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULL.
Fuckin' new jacks...
no one
... actually mentioned Dinosaur Jr, or am I missing something here..?
My mistake
I saw "Nirvana" "influenced" and "Dinosaur" and instantly reacted. But this SCROTUM feller's been so wildly off base through this whole thread that such a faux pau seemed in character.
I saw Dinosaur Jr in Oxford last night, first date of their Euro tour....
AMAZING as usual.
As for Oasis
how many bands in the US do you reckon cite them as an influence? And anyone who's been influenced by Blur has just been influenced by Pavement via proxy.
i
never got pavement, and, worse than that, i've never been able to express why i haven't without resorting to crass lines like "they're just shit aren't they". obviously they're not shit. but lord knows i'm never even going to try again. it's not the 90s anymore, and i'm getting old.
I wonder what I'd've thought of Interpol when I was fourteen?
there is no comparison other than them being lable mates
Interpol crushes Pavement
tunes, tunes, singable tunes and savoir faire up the wazoo. Pavement were indie schlumps, Interpol are ambassadors of cool.
try putting slanted enchanted on an singing along at the top of your lungs.
you're awesome
that said I'm sure there's a strong argument in Pavement's favour
I'm just nowhere near being a propagator at the moment
In favour of Pavement being more of a singalong band than Interpol?
I don't think that's an argument which even needs to be made.
i sing along to Slanted all the time dude
it's my ultimate sing-along album
I sing along to Slanted at the top of my lungs constantly.
And I only have the patience for one Interpol record. They're slightly different indie schlumps.
SHE'S GOT THE RADIOACTIVE AND IT MAKES ME FEEEEL OKAY.
i tried singing along to interpol at the top of my lungs
but i just sounded like andre the giant
Are you joking?
All together now: "ICE BABY, I-SAW YOUR GIRLFRIEND..."
...
Interpol
I just dont get pavement. Sorry.
But interpol are shit live.
Banks was a little stiff the first time I saw them
and Sam's drums were mic'd up way, way too hot but it was still worth the 2,000 mile trip.
2nd time with Liars supporting Banks was very sure of himself, turning his back on the audience and blowing smoke into the lights on Pace Is The Trick, playing a flying V, fender Jaguar and generally having everybody in the house hanging on his every move and word. Sam's drums were still too hot be he's one of the best drummers around, Daniel, and Carlos were awesome as usual. PDA, The Specialist and Say Hello To The Angels in the encore- Lighthouse in the sound check: sooo not shit.
I have heard some pretty bad recordings of them live
but the shows I've seen were wonderful
I mean: I have heard recordings of pretty stank interpol performances
fortunately I've never been present at one
First time I saw Interpol live: Glastonbury '05, quite decent
Second time: Reading '07, I love them so much I couldn't dislike it but the atmosphere, setting and timing was wrong
Third time: Latitude '08, absolutely phenomenal, in my top 5 gigs ever. It was perfect.
Interpol can be hit and miss live
but when they're good, they're brilliant. Saying that, I've not seen a gig of theirs I'd call 'shit'.
I also way prefer them to Pavement.
Pavement, obv
TOTBL lands a heavy blow, but then Pavement counters with a 1-2 S/E, CR,CR combo. Bam! Bam! Then Wowee Zowee, BTC, Terror Twilight stomps the shit outta Antics and OLTA to complete the TKO in the 6th round.
Malkmus floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee.
And Bob Nastanovitch's got that Sonny Liston thing goin' on...
I don't get these threads
two totally different bands, different eras, only a record label in common. It's like saying The Shins vs Mudhoney.
spot on
next battle - CHEESE v CARROTS ?!
Cheese
FTW
Now here's the clash of the titans...
DADDY or CHIPS?
umm.. am i missing something here?
how are interpol even close to being as good as pavement? totbl is a good album but everything they've done since has seemed average at best. pavement by comparison... well there is no comparison. interpol have one classic album and pavement have 3. pavement spank interpol.
Interpol FTW... I still stand by Our Love To Admire being a great album.
i love that one too- no doubt they've given us three phenomenal albums
pace is the trick
lighthouse
no i in 3 some
mammoth
pioneer to the falls
heinrich maneuver
all fired up
and i even like "wrecking ball , who do you think?" a lot more these days
Pavement.
I would say on paper Interpol are more my my thing, they have elements of many of my favourite bands, and although its a bit of a cliche, for me Interpol still haven't been able to make the great record that pulls everything together.
Pavement however have got a few perfect albums, just everything seems to work. There one of the few bands who I listen to no matter what particular mood I'm in or what particular style of music I am favouring at the moment.
listen to Grounded by Pavement
A track off one of their supposedly weaker albums (Wowee Zowee) and it still towers above everything Interpol have ever done
Interpol
Pavement have some moments but I've never really fallen for them, despite years of trying.
I'm resignedto them just being a 'time and a place' type band...
I like both bands
but it would have to be interpol.I love various pavement songs like grounded, box elder, hit the plane down etc.Ill need to actually spend a bit of time listenin to their albums.
I first seen interpol in aug 2003 at the liquid rooms in edinburgh, who funnily enough were supported by a then practcially unkown franz ferdinand. The gig still sticks in my mind as being completley superb one fo the best perfomances iv ever seen,i think the fact that i was absorbing totbl at the time also made it more effective.Seen them a handful of times since and its never been as good, that may be cos they are more polular now and tend not to play smaller venues. They played king tuts in 2002,still kicking myself for missing that one.
Crooked Reign
Pavement by a hectare. For god's sake one very good but slightly one paced Lp versus over a decade of shambolic genius???? What next, Northern uproar versus Stone Roses?
That is extremely wrong.
Interpol is a time and place type band, the early part of the decade is when they were considered hot shit, now just about everyone in their native country considers them a joke. Wheras Pavement have been revered since 1992.
pavement
pavement. Although I think I liked Interpol live more
what about the voice of Paul Banks
how did he get so high
I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy
One-album wonders vs creators of a genre? gimme a break
wtf genre did Pavement invent?
lo fi
or something
lo-fi isn't a genre
It's a way of defining the quality of a recording.
which
they turned into a genre
nope
well maybe pavement started american indie, nah wait R.E.M. started american indie
and Camper Van Beethoven, Dead Milkmen, Violent Femmes, Grifters hmm, I can't think what genre pavement started either.
btw, you are off the mark on the other account too- 3 great albums and counting.
Interpol is nowhere close to Pavement-One good album vs. four great albums.
Plus-Julian Plenti=turgid shite, SM & The Jicks=Glorious.
i dont like either of these bands, can i have a biscuit?
No you may not.
Eat your dinner first.
I'm loling a bit at all the hyper-elitists
if Interpol are so ridiculously below your darling lo-fi decade-spanning genii Pavement (who I do like quite a lot, btw), then do you find it incredulous that so many people support them as their favourite?
not at all
because Interpol have a more polished sound, are easier on the ears, are still active and are much more hyped and famous
Pavement were popular in the 90s but they've never been as exposed as Interpol, they always mantained their aura of weirdness and were more of an underground phenomenon, with a couple of exceptions like Cut Your Hair or Shady Lane
It seems like Pavement is the consensus here.
So that'd be inaccurate anyway.
Pavement, of course
Pavement's first three albums were absolute masterpieces, and the next two come close. Interpol has one great album, and it sure as fuck isn't Antics.
An odd comparison, no?
Quite like Pavement, prefer Interpol.
Rod Stewart or Billy Joel?
Billy all the way.
AND THE PIYANNO SOUNDS LIKE A CARN-A-VAAAL!!
You dont get the music
I dont get this comparrison
Pavement FTW, though Modest Mouse made the best 'indie' records of the 90s :)
It all falls whether you were listening to Pavement when they were around or werent really
Interpol, i liked some of thr first LP then got really bored with them and how cool everyone thought the bass player was.
I think Pavement are cool for being a very uncool band generally. Das Iz Pavement.
C'Mon!?!
Like this is even up for discussion.
Pacquiao Vs Hatton
Maradona Vs Eric Djemba Djemba
Prime fillet steak Vs The gristly shit you get in ready meal bolognese.
This is no contest - Pavement are indie-rock royalty. Who's gonna be talking about Interpol ten years after they split?
people will talk about interpol long after pavement settles in the dust
"indie rock royalty" is that one of those oxymoron things?
Oh please.
Really?
Oh yes, Mr. McToothpaste...
Really.
