The New Arctic Monkeys Album 'Humbug' is shite.
I've listened to it several times. There are a few decent tracks, such as Crying Lightning and Dangerous Animals, but its just so painfully boring and dull. It stinks of the Last Shadow Puppets, they have lost all their spunk and energy, fair play do something new, but jesus at least make it vaguely interesting. A gargantuan disappoint, although no doubt NME will hail it as the 'most important album ever ever ever made ever'

Arctic Monkeys
no, nme aren't sold on it either - it got 7/10
I think it's fantastic though, and their next one should be a proper classic
come on sunshine....
let's be honest, they will never ever top that first album. it doesnt help that they have all the charisma of a squashed gerbil.
First half is as good as anything they've done.
second tails off a bit but still has great moments.
8/10
agreed
takes a nose dive from cornerstone onwards
I really enjoy it
I'm with Tonk on this one
I find the lack of charisma argument a bit baffling
when I saw them live I was surprised at how effortlessly cool Alex Turner is.
effortlessly cool / boring as fuck
same thing.
er... no
not at all.
pretty much though
sadly, turner hasnt got a 'singing' voice
he is much more suited to barking out the lyrics and singing them quickly, not like the droning on this album
i for one dont understand why anyone would let josh homme near the production panel on an album - i mean qotsa are one of the most over rated bands of all time.
i hope the arctics regain some of their fire.
Agreed on the production.
British indie band gets the Kerrangg band treatment? Bonkers.
Disagreed on Turner's voice though. Yeah, it's wasted on Arctic Monkeys' racket at the moment but here it's superb:

"qotsa are one of the most over rated bands of all time"
You've just invalidated every opinion you've ever had. Ever.
They were never destined for longevity.
For me, they've got naturally worse as they've gone on. Not being a snobbish wankshaft but the EP they did early on sounded really promising. The album less so. The second album wasn't strong enough at all to hook me.
The Last Shadow Puppets are a different thing altogether. He doesn't have to worry about pleasing his audience who go for the stupid "Then we kissed, And sat on a park and got pissed" 'relateable' lyrics bullshit.
I can't even remember Crying Lightning. Honestly. The first time I heard Fake Tales of San Francisco, I couldn't get rid of it from my brain for days. The general public will agree with me. Trust. This will be their last record that anyone even mentions.
i think you're right about the general public and stuff sticking in your head
in 20 years time people will remember their first album as their but they'll have actually done some cracking interesting stuff when they got a bit more experimental
I have yet to listen to this album so i'll not make any daft statements about it though i think the 2 tracks i have heard from it are boring.
Anyhoo the problem for me with the monkeys is that their first album while good was obscenely overrated and they have had to live up to that ever since. Their 2nd album was not bad and they are crap live as they have no charisma or stage prescence.
Thta's just my thoughts.
Turner....
Has something about him as a songwriter, live they are pretty bland and boring. They were fantastic when they burst onto the scene, but just dull now. I predict they will be pretty poor as headliners at Reading & Leeds, Radiohead and KOL will shit all over them.
I think KOL are just as bad live as the monkeys.
Zero charisma, zero stage prescence.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this.
I don't think the album is "shite" nor do I think it's necessarily a poor album but it's a different sound to what they've done before, and I can't get into it no matter how hard a I try.
I am no fan of the Arctic Monkeys but I did appreciate their first album as far as it stood as a solid collection of vibrant, dance floor indie anthems with some very catchy lyrics. The second album had a few of the same highlights (plus '505' is one of the best songs they've produced, if you ask me), But what I like about the band is largely missing from their recent work and I have never been that in love with them to be bothered to follow them on their creative journey.
The album does what a third release should do - take new direction. I think the band have done that and it's not an unsuccessful experiment if I'm honest. The problem is that by altering your sound you divide those who originally bought into it and I think I am one of those who is going to have to part company with them. That's fine though and I prefeer bands that are willing to move forward no matter the cost, rather than those who peddle the same stuff for years on end and run out of ideas so much that their material becomes simply diluted forms of their original work (Oasis being a prime example of this).
kol have better tunes though.....
even though they are dull, they have a much broader catalogue of bangers than the monkeys.
Fair point.
Though their new stuff is crap.
new stuff isnt great
but despite what accusations people throw around, sex on fire, use somebody, closer, crawl or manhattan are bangers on the new album.
Fair dos.
I think its all dreadful.
My favourite Arctic Monkeys bit ever is the way Alex Turner says "delighted" in 'When the Sun Goes Down'.
Probably the best thing they'll ever do is that "delighted".
wait till you hear how he says "gasp" on Pretty Visitors
If he doesn't squeal like a teenage prostitute, I'm not interested.
i dunno...
does it beat 't-shirt and tie combinasshun' on brian storm?
Seems like...
the hype is disintegrating here.
On first listen I liked it...although it didn't blow me away. It was more background music.
I listened to it again and I was bored, very few of the tracks were listened to in full. A few nice lyrics and stuff but I'm let down, on the whole. I found myself revisiting Favourite Worst Nightmare and the later b-sides and wondering what happened.
Repeating what I said on the first listen thread...
...Future of the Left have made the best british rock album of the year by a country mile. Humbug is indifferent, muso stuff. All hail FOTL
..............why do they....
....all look like extras out of the league of gentleman now?
How much longer can they base a career on single string riffs and working class lyricism?
They've just grown their hair to cover their embarrassed faces
Dunno
Oasis have done alright for themselves
the....
nick cave cover is fucking attrocious.
Too be honest.
*Too be honest
I hope Turner goes off and does another Last Shadow Puppets album instead of touring this for ages... I'm undecided on the album, but expect I'll be pretty bored of it once the 3rd single is on the radio....
honestly i think it's the best thing they have done.
it has a slight feeling of the UK's Walkmen about it, almost chilled out and relaxed to get to where they want it to go, rather than the manic urgency of the previous albums. i like it a lot.
I really like it.
And I am a massive Monkeys fan so maybe I just feel like I should enjoy it, but I don't think there's one bad track. I always preferred their faster stuff, but even the slower ones on Humbug have a sinisterness to them.
No it ain't.
It's great. Clownshoes.
I downloaded this album
because it was said to sound like Nick Cave and I used to like Arctic Monkeys a few years ago before my music taste changed.
This album is pretty boring, just sounds boring and the guitar doesn't match the rest of the instruments at times, it still has that spunky sound of the other two albums whilst everything else has changed, not terrible though.
They're boring live, but the crowd brings the ruckus.
this album is....
a turkey, a real stinker if you ask me. not brave just horribly boring.
Yes, you've said already.
:thumb:
I haven't heard it
But that's because it's not out in the shops yet.
You dirty, thieving pirates, you...
It must be a stinker
if the NME and John Earls only gave it 7/10. They bums them Monkeys like a gay dude bums another gay dude.
i reviewed it on my blog
Please note -
If you do not want to read it, do not click on the link.
The review was written despite the fact - as I admit - I have not heard it. (Or any songs off it)
The review is kinda serious, but equally it is not serious.
http://wildeyemusic.wordpress.com/2009/08/06/everything-that-is-wrong-with-music/
despite all that i reckon i was spot on based on many of the posts above.
^ homophobe
"There album will undoubtedly be a highlight of the 2009 mainstream"
Nice English by the way.
hey, don't you know he's better than the majority of professional musicj ournalists
BTW: If I was you I really would listen to Kid A, so you can justifiably voice an opinion on Radiohead.
the first...
....2 albums were shite too.
anything with josh homme involved...
is bound to be shite.
wrong
their first album sounds dogshit in comparison to the new one
I think Humbug is damn good. Yes, some duds (Dangerous Animals?) but most of the tracks are cracking. Dance Little Liar, Pretty Visitors, Secret Door, My Propeller are some of the best things they've done. I could go on much longer.
I like it...
Its hard to compare against their first two efforts, I like them each for different reasons. Its not as heavy as I expected given all the hype surrounding the JH collaboration. Its hard to tell where Mr Homme's work stops and Mr Ford's work begins. Does anyone know who produced what?
Secret Door and Cornerstone were definitely James Ford; as far as I know the rest were Homme.
I thought secret door was Homme?
My Propeller and Cornerstone are Ford.
The guitar parts for Secret Door were produced by Homme and the rest was Ford.
Also didn't Mojo, in their track-y-track review of it, mention that My Propeller was Homme?
I apologise, the album arrived today and My Propellor is indeed a Ford track,a long with Secret Door and Cornerstone.
apparently homme did 7 of the tracks
i suggest probably the shit songs are homme influenced, as he is a fat talentless wanker.
Thats harsh...
although you could comfortably add ginger to your tirade
i didn't think their first two
were good albums, some of the songs were good, but this one works better as a whole
i think it's....
....GOOD....
Never got into the Arctic Monkeys
Depsite being from Yorkshire, the hype is just way too much and the way they distanced themselves from doing interviews or press just smacked of trying too hard to be cool. I bought the second album on the back of all the hype and was really disappointed. 'Flourescent Adolescent' was hailed as one of the greatest tracks of our era at the time but I seen nothing special about it.
Might get it when it comes into the two for a tenner
Its the best thing they've done
They do seem to be sounding more like The Coral though (Nightfreak era)
Last track The Jewlers Hands is the best thing they've done in my opinion, last 1.5m are perfection
just heard CRYING LIGHTNING on the radio - immensely shite
I've alway failed to see any kind of musical talent whatsoever in these young 'uns. First album was average, overhyped indie fare, second was samey, this new one puts them back where they belong (behind the McD's counter).
And God, they really are BORING.
Arctic Monkeys are just a typical UK indie band.
All hype, but when you look behind it, there's not much there. I never saw the appeal in the first place and the guy's voice puts me off a little bit. Maybe they're not all that bad, but heaven - far from great either.
And so the backlash begins in earnest
to be honest I thought the first album was just a tiny smidgen (is smidgen a word?) above average. Not a particularily interesting band from the outset in my humble opinion
The backlash? What..
.. a couple of middle aged people on a message board don't like their album and its a backlash. For the last 3 years I keep seeing pathetic people on message boards keep saying, "the backlash begins blah blah" but look, they consistently headline big festivals and sell plenty of records. Just because a few people who think Sunn O)) is a musical revolution or something dont like it doesn't mean they don't have any fans.
Out of interest what do you classify as 'Middle aged'?
Anybody
older than me and who I decide is a prick spouting nonsense that I want to put down. Basically, anyone who uses the phrase: "music for 13 year old girls".
I'm in no way qualified to make these judgements
since I've not actually listened to the last two albums, but I'm going to anyway.
The first album had six or seven genuinely incredible songs, and fortunately for them (in terms of sales) these included the singles. I watched them headline Glastonbury on the telly and thought Brianstorm was an amazing track, but the rest was phenomenally dull. Teddy Picker surely has the worst riff of all time. I saw them do the new single on the Culture Show and thought it was self indulgent nonsense.
Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys EP was good though.
But then again what do I know... I watch the Culture Show?
It's a solid effort.
6 or 7 out of 10.
Definitely not shite. I think the Arctics dropping the ball is a wish which will go unfulfilled for the cynics. Sorry. If someone wasn't convinced by FWN, they ain't gonna be on board for this.
It does what it does. No more, no less. What did you want, Revolver? Doolittle? OK Computer?
Truth be told, I really expected them to morph and evolve for this un. The fact that they haven't (not really) is quite interesting.
I've been listening to the album all weekend...
and decided Crying Lightning is tremendous and easily the best tune on the album. It does deviate at certain points into the mediocre and there is a definite lack of killer tunes to make it a classic. 7 out of 10 is probably a fair summation. Who knows, this time next week it might have 'grown' on me as a whole...
I think
it's their best album yet.
Here's my review: http://bit.ly/ojiLE
There are no good listeners anymore
I think the new broodier Arctic Monkeys is a step in the right direction. I enjoyed both their previous efforts but was dubious as to whether I would enjoy a third incarnation of the same sound, different songs. For me, bands that never evolve lose my interest; if music is a reflection of the people playing it and those people develop as they age then so should their music, simple maths really. The Arctic Monkeys have consistently produced great songs (that’s why so many people love them, despite what you might think) and this album is no exception. The darker tones which accompany them show a band that is growing; it may not be everyone’s cup of tea (shut up and go and listen to something else) but it certainly is mine.
why did people liked this band in the frist place?
oh yeah because the dudes a poet
i found the lyric...
..."what came first, the chicken or the dick'ed?" both biting social commentary and a witty flag-waving victory dance in the face of the middle classes.
or something. fucking awful band.
That whole 'poet' angle really annoyed me. He's just a whining indie kid that you can find in any indie club on a Friday night.
come one, hes hardly an indie kid, how many rare cds/records/tapes you think he owns?
i heard him saying on telly his favourite song when he was at school was some grime dude. hardly a music geek.
Cor all
I hate the way that 'Crying Lightning' is such a terrible attempt at ripping off The Coral. Yes, I know that The Coral were musical magpies, but they did it with some talent and came up with something original. On their first album anyway...
..........
Artic Monkeys = a shit coral? it's a yes.
Are the reviews being totally honest?
I haven't heard the album yet but most of the reviews seem to be tepid to say the least. It's almost like no one likes the album much but they are too scared to be the first one to say it.
arctics are terrible now.
wank.
have to agree
listened throughout a couple of times and just got bored with the overproducing and monotony of every song, nothing stands out, i am a sheffield lad and wouldn't wanna tarnish their name but this just does not deliver
Arctic Monkeys are clearly haeding for the gutter..
...I mean, the support band tonight were some shit new start up called Them Crooked Vultures. Can't they afford a decent support band?
PS Said it before, but hey I'm nothing if not repetitive - this album will be seen as the Monkeys' crowning glory in years to come. Some of the more perceptive of us recognise it as such now, of course. Can't be arsed to look back but I'm certain most of the more vitriolic of the wankers in this thread would have said the same about albums number 1 and 2 - and, like here, would probably have prepared their response in Word a few months before release.
^ dickhaed
Good parts of each song on Humbug
Thr driving force of My Propeller. (it's the song that the seven dwarfs would probably listen to nowadays before they went down the mine)
Crying Lightning (The fact that the band could have released a shitty attempt at old glory to appeal to the masses. instead they release this as a first single)
The fact that Turner has taught a generation of teenagers how to spell long winded words such as dangerous. Also the line about the lioness is going to become short hand for something.
The sixties sexiness of the secret door slamming behind them.
The breakdown in Potion Approaching, currently my favourite part of the album.
Fire and the thud has these genius fade off parts which are just grand. (Ok, it really isn't the best track on the album)
The sheer breakaway from the feel of the album with Cornerstone into guiltypleasure pop.
The drums in Dance little liar. and the fact this chappo likes it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN7EiFpiNgU
The imagery of Pretty visitors.
The organ grindery of Jewellers.
Right now I admit at times I had to scrath my head to get some of them down, but they are all valid points. my mum says so yeah?
