has anyone here seen them live lately? thoughts..
really like (not love though) the new album and was really excited. but they were meh.
I was reviewing it and here's what I said...
"The headline acts play in ‘The Cowshed’ which is exactly that. In preparation for the festival they’ve moved the cows out and decorated it with dishevelled Victorian chic. Tonight a packed cowshed crowd watches The Horrors loom out of the dry ice. They play a Primary Colours-heavy set that the majority of the crowd laps up although I am unconvinced. The vocals have so much reverb on them that Farris sounds like Brendon Flowers trapped down a very deep well. As the set continues you are left with the impression that The Horrors really only have one song and that is a song that has a stamp saying “if found please return to The Jesus And Mary Chain” on it."
The Horrors sound NOTHING like JAMC. there quite few unsubtle nods to Can and MBV on the new record but no Mary Chain.
I agree with you about the record but live they sounded like they'd learnt everything they know from 'My First Book Of DarkLands Guitar'. Srsly.
They were knackers.
great performance, deeply regretting some of their followers
(or so it seems to me)
and whilst their song selection was excellent (all tracks from new record) their presence on such a large stage was non-existant. On the same token, I caught them 2 months ago in Camden and they were truly immense.
On the whole I would say my experience of them performing live was above average.
in Pomona (not the LA show) they were incredible. at the LA show, I wasn't super convinced. Same with the Kills. Great one night, meh the next.
At glastonbury on the park stage but found them boring for the most part at field day
But. To be fair on them the crowd seemed fed up with the weather by then and the sound was too quiet, neither of which can be blamed on the band. The first 2 songs (same as the album) didn't work for me mainly because they don't seem to be able to recreate the 'MBV noise' from the guitar live, without a second guitar you can't hear the chord changes. The guitarist was the only one really into it though and when he swapped guitars it got a lot better.
I reckon headlining with their own sound man they could be pretty special and the album is brilliant, interested to see how they do at ATP.
totally captured the mood of the parkstage and the lighting and the fact it was dark really helped
although to be honest i'd not heard the new stuff at all. But it didn't seem very memorable as a performance for me.
In every aspect. Good live band? Certainly not.
