plz and thank you
Just been listening to some Steely Dan myself. Aja is the only album I'm familiar with so far, but it's absolutely fantastic.
They have a very slick sound and are quite traditional in places. Some of it is great and some is a bit embarassing really.
I don't have all their stuff but Can't Buy A Thrill is worth owning for Do It Again and Reelin in the Years alone (though beware there's a bit of MOR crap on there) but I'd say Pretzel Logic wins out. Once again though PL has a couple of duds, particularly if you're not a fan of the blues.
I've not managed to penetrate Aja yet, it's slickness scares me.
If you've never heard them before. Great album & pretty accessible compared with later stuff. Also 'Countdown to Ecstasy'.
i'll check out Aja anyway, cheers guys
and several other slow burners that will become favourites later.
Gaucho is quite poor, most everything else is excellent, my order is:
Pretzel Logic (faultless, even East St. Louis Toodle-Oo is brilliant and camp)
Aja (another faultless set although not as strong as PL, slick production)
Countdown to Ecstasy (probably easiest album to get into as Showbiz Kids and Bodhisattva are straight up blues rock)
Can't Buy A Thrill (solid debut, reelin in the years is a classic)
The Royal Scam (Kid Charlemagne is outstanding, everything else is average)
Katy Lied (pretty average)
FOR THE HARDCORE FANS ONLY
Two Against Nature
Everything Must Go
gaucho is the best record but its a hard nut to crack you feel me? royal scam/countdown is like the easiest to get into if you aint jammed much dan before, pretzel logic is the weakest lp for sure, some of the songs are straight up shit (im thinking of you, 'parkers band')
my Dan loving friend Steve swears like yourself it is the best record, but it leaves me cold, none of the tracks really get me going, and the production is just far too clinical (hypocritical statement alert!) there's a few Dan albums i would rate below Fagen's own 'The Nightfly' (yes yes yes the production is so digital it's unreal but Gaucho hasn't got anything as good as IGY)
But yeah anywhere bar Gaucho and the two newer albums are good places to start, they're all great.
It's always been my favourite, although i grew up with that and Pretzel Logic, which may influence my preference over the rest of their catalogue.
I'd also recommend Donald Fagen's solo stuff, The Nightfly is particularly great.
have something to offer but if you are a newbie i'd start with 'greatest hits' or 'can't buy a thrill'. 'pretzel logic' is my fave but it took awhile. 'aja' is so so smooth - its brilliant but too smooth for some. 'gaucho' is too smooth for even me. i would agree that donald fagens solo stuff is worth punt with The Nightfly being pretty damn strong
i think its time to man the fuck up and admit that you probably dont really like steely dan
ha! i love all their records previous to it - Gaucho is gloopily smooth -too much sax is never a good thing
Showbiz Kids up on their site for £4.99. That's a comprehensiver compilation and a solid start.
