What are they? Based on range, price, delivery etc.
p&p adds about 30% onto the price of whatever you're buying
its free if your order is over £5 - which it almost always is. Or if you're talking about Marketplace, it's £1.20 delivery, which is only 1/3 if you're otherwise buying very very cheap CDs. I haven't found a CD cheaper than on Marketplace for months.
I use these mostly. Boomkat is more electronic orientated whereas Norman has a wider range. You're probably not going to find a good first class rate unless you spend over a certain amount (Norman is free over £50). You can always use Amazon's super saver delivery option.
I'm not really expecting an independent store to be able to compete with that, but as far as a major chain goes, Play and HMV beat it hands down, they're both quicker too.
to get the Burial/Four Tet 12".
I tend to use Play.com a lot, they're not the cheapest but they have free delivery and pretty quick delivery times (approx 3 days)
Also, if it's independent and you know what you're after, direct from the label. I've bought from Sub-Pop, Big Scary Monsters, Gizeh, had great service from all of them.
Fatcats is a really nice label to buy off, as is Drag City.
plus if you enter 'fallnet' into the coupon code box you can get 10% off your purchase
Seconded on Boomkat, Norman and Action records - all good.
Recordstore.co.uk has a pretty wide-reaching selection, they sometime fob you off by listing stuff they then can't get hold of but a decent bet if you're looking to get a bunch of semi-obscure bits from the same place.
Bleep.com also great for weirdy electronica.
try Discogs. It's usually pretty good. I've bought a couple of CDs from people on there that I couldn't find anywhere else and the prices are usually reasonable
I would recommend Norman Records great selection and they get pretty rare 7" from the u.s
if you are going to buy online try to go with the independents wherever you can - fuck amazon, hmv etc - they get huge discounts off the distributors which are completely unfair on smaller shops. and this is not just on your major label coldplay cds - but on your underground stuff too that comes through the likes of Cargo.
you should come to my dj nights. if you like stuff from Volcanic Tongue you will love what we play. no doubt.
1st Thursday of every month. We are called Not For Resale Hurrah - a total shameless plug! But yeah - if you like your dub beats, feral atmospherics, avant pop and guitar scree (etc etc...) you might enjoy yourself. We put our setlists up on our blog if you want to check us out in closer detail - liek this one: http://nfrblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/nfr-setlist-2nd-june-2009.html
maybe this is better as a note/message thing.
Aquarius Records for all the awesome stuff that you wouldn't hear about elsewhere, and for being nice people to deal with. It is American, but prices are perfectly decent even with that, and they get hold of stuff that is really hard/impossible to find.
Norman Records are a superb company to deal with - they are not the cheapest but you get first class, friendly service and sometimes free stuff too. Highly recommended and great for rarer stuff too.
Personally I avoid HMV.com like the plague, they are awful and the complete opposite of Norman. After several pitiful example many years back I will never use them again for anything. They still owe me money from about four years ago.
