A very good place to start"
then 'EP + 6'
Or at the same time
They're all pretty good so as people have said, go chronologically.
It feels like a best of.
If I was to pick a persnal favourite I would tend to go for "Happy Songs For Happy People". Beautiful album.
Ten Rapid is the collection of eps and stuff that came out in 97. Start there. The version of Summer is much prettier. It is also their first album type release. In fact, start with the first release - Angels vs. Aliens and go from there.
Make sure you include Kicking A Dead Pig and the Zidane soundtrack. They are still proper Mogwai albusm in these sne sof getting a sense of the band.
Start at the beginning and work through in order. I never understand these 'where to start' questions - ALWAYS start with the first releases. Why wouldn't you? Becasue you want someone else to tell you what to listen to? There is a vague sense that that could be useful if you have to cut out the occasional crap album...but by whose standards would that be judged. meh. start from the beginning and figure it out yourself.
That's not at you personally HappyHands, just soze you knowz.
Or are these threads just a chance for people to air their opinions about a bands history?
Enjoy this journey, it'll take your head off and into somewhere else entirely.
but isn't this entire forum about people airing their opinions about bands. A band's history and what's god/shit/great about it is just another subjective point of dispute. It doesn't mean anything but none of this does
sits fine with me - bands are Gods. Let's not get on the god thing again after Doran shit in his eye and started a one man jihad.
oooh, did you see what I did.
and I don't object to that. I don't really object to the asking of 'where to start' either but it still seems like a non-question that should only ever be met with the answer 'At the beginning'.
It's a phrase that bites me, that's all, I normally watch these go by without a flicker but today I got my bearhead on and bit back.
that this kind of thread generally get's 4 types of response
- Start with the best album and work down in quality
- Start with the worst and things can only get better
- Start with the most difficult or experimental release
- Start at the beginning
Generally I think it depends on the persons personality
- The glass is half empty
- The glass is half full
- It's about everything outside of the glass
- Let's talk about sand
half empty because someone kicked sand in it.
If someone's going to spend their hard-earned cash on a record by a band that has a sizeable back catologue they might as well pick the album that is most appealing to them. Admittedly, the first Mogwai record I got was Ten Rapid, but it's no way the best place to start - Happy Songs For Happy People is the better album/collection of songs (well at least in my opinion). But, when there's an album like Government Comissions available, surely thats' the best place for someone new to start. It offers them an introduction to nearly all of their albums/eras and you can pick the "sound" that you like the most and go and buy the relevant album and then if you want to, work your way back or forwards. They might even find out that the first collection of songs is all they need and want.
Luckily pretty much everything they have released is on Spotify. You have a point though. Saying that they should start at the beginning presupposes a large disposable income and that the beginning gives the most fully realised idea of their sound (which for most bands is almost never true). It's not a logical step to start with the first but probably with what's generally considered best or a compilation (such as the Peel sessions).
I'd say Young Team or Come On Die Young.
....was the first Mogwai album that clicked for me. Young Team and the EP are also good places to start
i bought it because i liked the name and they got a decent review in the NME at the time (god i was/am so uncool).
anyway, i loved it and everything that have done since/prior. Also, live, they are still the loudest thing i have ever heard.
many times i've moaned at stupid posts like "where to start"...its like you need your arse cleaning by someone superior. its so easy to just go research the band or randomly buy and album and work either left or right in their discography. personally i would start from the start like I did, but i was lucky enough to watch mogwai from the start. Ten Rapid and onwards...
God I thought this was forum where people shared opinions and asked questions? I like doing my own research on bands but I also like to hear and share opinions with others. Don't be so pompous!
Why get so narky with someone asking for advice? It's not always the case to buy records in order. With a band like Mogwai it's easy advice to start at the beginning but I wouldn't tell someone to start with the first records of the Stones, Beatles, Dylan etc... Therfore I've no problem saying what record I'd recommend.
young team then the stanley kubrick ep was the order I did them, wish i'd stopped there
My favourite tracks:
- My Father My King
- Mogwai Fear Satan (Mogwai remix)
reduces me to bawling at ebbs and lows.
Also start with Come On DIe Young and Government Commissions
